Editorial Reviews

Gram Parsons pioneered the concept of a rock band playing country music, playing in bands such as The Byrds, The International Submarine Band and The Flying Burrito Brothers. His work has influenced both country and rock artists such as The Rolling Stones and Linda Ronstadt by "blending the two genres to the point that they became indistinguishable from each other."

Compiled from 1973 studio sessions ‘Grievous Angel' was originally released in 1974, four months after the songwriters death. It was the second solo album from Gram Parsons and is viewed as a successful example of the hybrid between country androck and rollParsons called "Cosmic American Music". In 2003 it was ranked in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 greatest albums of all time.

A country rock gem
Listened to the vinyl in college, then the CD and now this SACD puts you in the studio and bar. Takes me back to Minneapolis in the 70s when bar bands were playing a lot of Gram Parsons.

Came as advertised and sounded great!

Great songs that sound great on this vinyl pressing. I've been a huge fan of this for years, but never had it on vinyl. If you are a fan of Americana, roots music, alt. country, etc. (Gram hated the term country rock) then you absolutely need this this record and the GP album too.

Possibly the best "make me smile" album in my vast collection. What a brilliant genius of a songwriter and singer, too bad he couldn't kick junk...classic, classic album, so good!!

A wonderful treasury of Gram Parson with Emmy Lou Harris. It is so tragic that he died from drugs at age 26. He had so much talent. The CD is extremely well produced with multilayers of sweet song.

Gram was a great songwriter, but never put out enough music for all of us to enjoy.

One of the greatest losses music ever had, this guy was on the cusp of greatness. I love this collection, and I'm giving it a front row position in the rack.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Truly Fallen Angel
Reviewed in Canada on November 24, 2012
All those old enough to hear about, or remember, the tragic occurrences at the Altamont Speedway in California may also remember the words and music of Gram Parsons. Indeed the culture and times that surrounded the dismal spiral of death at Altamont forms an appropriate metaphor for the life and death of Gram Parsons. The Flying Burrito Brothers opened there – Gram died not real far away from there a few years later. The sort of biographical documentary of Gram Parsons found on ‘Fallen Angel’ is fundamentally chilling in its portrayal of the man who invented country rock – Poco was in there too but in a different strain of country music. This docutragedy really is a series of vignettes interviewing those that either knew him best (EmmyLou Harris, Chris Hillman and Keith Richards) and those that temporarily surrounded him. Are there downsides to this creation - yes - some of the interviews are tedious and manufactured however the focus remains on the life and music of Gram Parsons - a gloriously tragic figure.

The film more of less follows the life of Gram Parsons from his southern roots to his times spent with the International Submarine Band, The Byrds on ‘Sweetheart of the Rodeo’ and on tour, the Flying Burrito Brothers and finally his own releases. His voice can actually lift your soul and bring goosebumps throughout your body. I really miss who he was what he did. All of the country rock bands that came after – from the Eagles to the some of the stuff done by Kid Rock - all show historical resonance with the music initiated by Gram Parsons. RIP Gram – may you find peace in the Joshua Tree – peace you never could find in your short, bumpy life.

5.0 out of 5 stars エミルーハリスとの恋の果て
Reviewed in Japan on January 10, 2015
