- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2022I honestly had a surprise when I read the first book in the series (Varsity Servant) and absolutely loved it. It was unexpectedly and consistently funny. However the biggest surprise was this one. I loved it so much I pre-ordered this book, my first pre-order on Amazon too. If I could rate it a solid 10!!!!
Let's start with how unapologetically the race issue is addressed and though I find it absolutely hilarious (it ain't that serious - this is a work of FICTION after all) some readers may turn their noses up at it. I also loved that Makeba is described as such a lovely dark skinned knock-out but without others recognizing it because of her skin tone. As a dark-skinned woman myself, I know that is accurate. You can have all the other qualities that defines attractiveness or success/achievement and people can't get passed what they have been led to believe and are blinded. If you have to read this series people then get comfortable with the references. I loved how both characters just go with the flow even though despite the seemingly 'race' issue.
There is also quite a bit of Kya and Cole in this story and it made me realise I really loved Kya's personality. This book definitely has some great personalities.
Second, I didn't go into this expecting the empowerment journey Makeba goes on. It was a nice and welcomed surprise and gave this work some depth that I would be happy to see more of in the author's future work. I know it had to be a little fast-paced so the depth that could have applied was limited. No problem on my end. After reading the first in the series I expected the unapologetic politically incorrect and potentially 'distasteful/dark/dirty' concepts Ms. Jamila dishes out. And though I have not read all her work, her concepts of 'Dark' don't work for me apart from this series - at least so far as I have read.
And lastly, I think of this as my guilty pleasure because of the laugh out loud ridiculousness that is the dialogue between the lovers, the situations they find themselves in and the utter disbelief that they will go ahead and do some of the things they do. That being said, Makeba was a hard chase for Jayce though but the comedy was TOP NOTCH! And the black girl unity was again hilarious.
My two cents in terms of drawbacks - I could have done with more to read though in no way do I feel it was too short, I just really liked the story. Also, I did not like that we did not get to have that POV when Jayce and team did what they did to the ex. I could have done with a POV from him (the ex) to give the story a little more wow factor with more consequences.
It may not be for everyone, but I am definitely going to read the next in the series even though I don't find myself that interested in Raven's story. I hope I change my mind when I do get to read it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2023It’s a solid read. Once again this one was wild. I cannot even begin to explain how ridiculous Jace was acting because this man was deranged like I don’t know what he was thinking, half the time like serious, like not even like torture, torture, but torture, and then the author lightly touched the subject of school shootings and then lost over it. I don’t know like I can tell she glosses over a lot of stuff in this book and it’s OK but this is not OK I mean, I don’t know but onto the next again love this book and the couple
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2023This was something different for me, there were some things that were hard to read. I won’t go into details because I dislike when ppl do it. To each their own and only we ourselves know what we’re willing to put up with. He did help her empower herself so I most definitely loved that. J.J did an amazing job with this book, it really is a dark romance book. She gave back in measures and I love that she’s a strong young blk woman. I love the chemistry, the craziness and it was a lot of that. I also like that she continues to let you know what’s going on with Cole & Kya.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2023This kidnapping crap is uncalled for. How do you kidnap someone twice. The second time shouldn’t have been forgiven. Then all of a sudden he is a decent human being.
The BJ thing was weird.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2024This book was definitely better than the first. It's an actual dark romance, I liked it. It had had just enough darkness to make it worthy of the title, unlike the first. I have a feeling the next one is really gonna be unhinged, but I'm hoping the writing 5 still good and better than this one🙌🏾
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2022First, please know that if you're looking for himbo male leads who will trip over a girl with melanin this is it. I really liked how the male lead struggled to explain his feelings and then eventually just decided that he would protect and do anything for her. The premise seems dark, but I think this is one of the easier dark novels to read because !spoiler! I personally feel that their dynamic turns more into an immature prank war of sorts and him blackmailing her quickly gets overshadowed once he realizes he has feelings and forgets all about the video.(typical himbo energy)
The only reason why I docked a point is because I know this is a college romance, and the female leads are freshmen, but Kya was just not doing it for me and there are some inconsistencies with tone and world building for example
SPOILER
-the male lead tells the female lead TWICE that he was abused by his dad and his mother died when he was three. And the second time he tells her this had me think that the author forgot that she already had this conversation between the characters earlier because the female lead is equally surprised the second time it's mentioned so I had thought that I reread a chapter by mistake, but no.
-the male lead has the female leads ex beat up to the point that an ambulance is called and the way that the novel just kind of brushes over it even though both leads are dead ass STARING at patrol cars on campus before it immediately shifts to a new scene was like...huh?
End spoiler!
I will say the tone shifts/inconsistencies only happened 3 times at most and this is a 18/19 year old couple pairing. I wasn't too bothered because drama does fade away when you're that young and more focused on your extremely attractive partner so I would still recommend. It's a story that's funny, has a dude drunk on p****, and is a easy read for a darker romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2024I enjoyed reading this book, it had me laughing at the main characters so much, I was afraid my family would think something was wrong with me. I did love that in the story real life events were included . I do recommend it .

1.0 out of 5 stars Very mixed
I try not to give low marks, but feel certain themes cross the boundaries of good writing. Very difficult to see this story in a romantic light.
