"A really lovely and well thought out piece of work that will be well used." – Dave Broom, author of The Way of Whisky
"We don’t have the cupboard full of recondite bitters and liqueurs that so many mixologists expect of us. So Alice Lascelles has tackled the problem straight-on and produced a neat edit of more than 100 drinks that rely on just a few core ingredients." – Tony Turnbull, The Times
Cocktails should be simple. Acclaimed drinks writer Alice Lascelles knows everything there is to know about making delicious drinks at home with minimal equipment and fuss.
The Cocktail Edit is built around a ‘capsule collection’ of 12 classic cocktails – each of these is followed by six twists, plus tips and inspiration for creating many more. The book also offers essential advice on getting your home bar set up – and shows how easy it is to make amazing cocktails with just a few basic tools, ingredients and techniques.
It’s a guide brimming with trade secrets on everything from choosing the best-value spirits to making cocktails for a party; written in a conversational style, and illustrated with beautiful photography, The Cocktail Edit is practical, opinionated and fun.

From the author - How This Book Works:
Getting the basics right is crucial when it comes to making cocktails – so the first half of The Cocktail Edit is dedicated to ingredients, tools and techniques.
The second half of the book contains 100 cocktail recipes divided into 13 chapters. Each chapter begins with a classic cocktail, such as a Negroni or Gimlet, and then explores six variations on the theme. In most cases it’s the ingredients or formula that these recipes have in common. But just occasionally – as in the case of Punches & Cups – it’s more the occasion or mood. (The exception to all this, as you may notice, is chapter 13, which contains 16 drinks that have nothing in common except for the fact that I couldn’t bear to leave them out.)
The indexes at the back have been designed so you can search by cocktail name or ingredient. There is also an alternative index that groups recipes along more thematic lines: ‘Trashy’, ‘Secret handshakes’, ‘Cooling cocktails for hot days’.
The only cocktail book you will ever need, with 100 recipes as well as practical tips for effortless home cocktails. Cocktails include:
THE GIN SOUR
THE OLD FASHIONED
THE DAIQUIRI
THE MARGARITA
THE SPRITZ
THE HIGHBALL

About the author

Alice Lascelles is an award-winning drinks journalist, author and presenter
She writes a popular column in the Financial Times about wine, spirits and bar culture, and can often be found talking about drinks on BBC Radio 4 and on the TV.
Her articles and columns have also appeared in The Times, The Economist, Wired, Monocle, Vice, Food & Wine, Noble Rot and many trade and specialist publications including the authoritative Oxford Companion to Spirits & Cocktails.
Her guide for the home bartender, The Cocktail Edit: Everything You Need to Know About How to Make All The Drinks That Matter (Quadrille 2022) was named a Book of the Year by the The Times, The Telegraph, the Financial Times and Esquire. Her third book, The Martini: The Ultimate Guide to a Cocktail Icon will be published by Quadrille in September 2024.
Alice is an expert on the production and provenance of drinks, but she also loves the stories that go with them. Her subjects have ranged from the rise of Japanese whisky and the science of bubbles, to profiles of rapper-turned sommelier Dynamite MC and the bar scene that helped regenerate New Orleans post-Katrina.
She enjoys public speaking and has given talks and lead tastings on both sides of the Atlantic at events ranging from FT Weekend Live at Washington DC’s Kennedy Centre and the Speyside Whisky Festival to the London Literature Festival on the Southbank.
She is a Fortnum & Mason Drinks Writer of the Year and IWSC Spirits Communicator of the Year, and has also been made a Keeper of the Quaich and a Chevalier of the Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne in recognition of her work.
Before she became a journalist, Alice studied English at Cambridge and spent several years working in the arts. She's also musician with a White Stripes tour and several releases - including an album under the name Alice Gun – under her belt. Her other great loves are gardening, dogs and fell walking in the Lake District.
She lives in London with her husband and two sons.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 January 2025Really great quality book! The information inside is so valuable. The information on the importance of the ice and the overall fundamentals is great for a beginner! Makes a great gift!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 January 2023I saw this on Amz and added this to my Christmas wish list and was lucky enough to receive it.
It’s truly one of the best, simplest and most straight talking cocktail book on the market.
Great idea to focus on 12 key cocktails then show you how to make variations on the theme.
Filled with lots of useful advice in the front section about how to best mix, get the essential kit and as Alice states, don’t shy on the use of ice!
I love the book and style of her drinks and how to make them.
I’ve been making cocktails since lockdown one and this was a pleasure to pick up and continue my cocktail adventure.
Thanks Alice!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 December 2022I received this book as a Christmas gift, and have been absorbed in it for the last four days. I have bought bourbon, made sugar syrup, ordered bitters and Aperol, and fantasised about this lady making me whiskey sours, Manhattans, Martinis - a different cocktail every evening. I have created my own cocktail, a variation on a Bramble, but with Creme de Peche. It was stunning.
I recommend this highly to anyone who enjoys cocktails. Our Friday Martini night has already been replaced by Gin Sours.
My only negative comment is that I have learned to increase measurements by a factor of eight, in order to create a proper drink, rather than a thimble full.
Lovely book, written with obvious passion and true expertise.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 April 2023Bought for me by my brother and I've subsequently bought it for three other people. Alice Lascelles writes eloquently and with a huge knowledge base. This book gives you everything you need to create a cocktail cabinet of dreams.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 November 2022A MUST for any home cocktail maker. This book and her first book are marvellous. A great read and insight into cocktail making. Everyone who loves a cocktail needs this book. Show off to your friends by making these delights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a perfectly balanced cocktail
Exactly the right blend of information (all the pertinent information to get started) in a very consumable form, including the 12 bottle bar, equipment, ice options and how to organise oneself. This is going to be my cocktail bible. There are also three clever indexes at the back of the book, organised by taste, name and key ingredient.
