Product description

Product Description

One of a small handful of truly international wind players, Martin Fröst mesmerizes audiences throughout the world, whether performing concertos especially written for him or core repertoire such as the pieces presented here.Fröst's first recording of the Concerto in A major is one of the best-selling discs in BIS' history. Returning to this glorious work, he now also directs the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and has assembled a truly star-studded group of friends for the coupling works.

Review

'[Fröst] directs the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, and his performance has great suavity and fluency.' --The Guardian, Andrew Clements, 18/10/2013

'The Swedish clarinetist put his early thoughts on the finest concerto for his instrument in 2003...he remains one of this masterpiece's supreme interpreters...the concerto and trio are pure joy from first to last.' ALBUM OF THE WEEK --The Sunday Times, Hugh Canning, 27/10/13

'With his smooth, liquid tone, Fröst is always sensitive to the music's melancholy undertow, bending the pulse in response to a shadowing of the harmony. His discreet added embellishments and inventive 'lead-ins' always sound spontaneous.' --Gramophone, January 2014

'Bubbling along with joyous, unstoppable momentum, its dancing energy feels entirely natural, making other versions seem hopelessly slow and earthbound (although of course, they are not). Fröst takes the melody's vast double octave leaps entirely in his stride, and dispatches the virtuosic flourishes with élan and masterful articulation. You can't go wrong with either of Fröst's excellent recordings of the Concerto, but the sheer, grin-inducing thrill of this finale may be the deciding factor.' --International Record Review, January 2014

'His liquid sound, with bubbling arpeggio figuration and hushed pianissimos, is well matched by the chamber-scale contribution of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, neatly tuned and well balanced...an immaculately played and beautifully recorded disc.' --BBC Music Magazine. February 2014

This was ordered as soon as I heard it on the radio - quite fabulous in every way. I have read some reviews saying Frost is too slick technically - what rubbish! Technical perfection allows musicality to blossom, and the phrasing, nuances, and dynamic control are, forgive the pun, breath-taking. Repeated listening can become less satisfying, not so here. The pure quality oozes from the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, and is matched by demonstration standard sound quality - my system has seldom sounded as good. Fantastic.

I entirely agree with the review by Sid Nuncius.
For me the concerto is performed very beautifully but it is all a little laid back. I learn, nor hear, anything new from this performance. In the hands of Marin Frost the music flows like oil and Mozart would have been pleased about this, but would Mozart have want a bit more drama. ?
The trio is slightly better and if you turn up the volume the clarinet sound is very well projected indeed, but for my liking the beautiful first movement is a tad too slow and measured The three players mould the music very sensitively and there is much to enjoy, but for me it does not deserve a five star rating.
I have to add that I am a great admirer of Martin Frost.
    I streamed this disc,

Martin Frost's playing of Mozart's beautiful classic is simply wonderful. His range of tone, pace and clarity of this recording make it a joy to listen to.

What’s special about this CD isn’t just Martin Frost’s playing, but the inclusion of the Mozart Kegelstatt trio, a less known, but lovely work. Highly recommended!
