Pierre Boulez is one of Europe's most prominent conductors. You can't always recognize that if you don't like his ultra-modern compositional production. However, these are two different things. He is always precise and insightful when interpreting any composer. The Mahler cycle is an excellent example of this. As for Bartok, Bulez does not disappoint his listeners this time either. When the vision is clear and knows how to place its interpretation justifiably in the entire field of Western art music, the listener can at the same time enjoy a fresh vision and reliable certainty. The audience stays in a tuned state and does not have to be afraid of any easy solutions in the style of "over where the fence is lowest".

Rare opportunity to purchase so much of Bela Bartok's output in one package. Received on time, well packed and good value for money. Of course, I haven't been able to listen to everything as yet - there's such a of of it - but I'm looking forward to doing just that as we get into autumn. I'd rather forgotten how good some of these vintage recordings really are.

Great recordings, great orchestra's and sollists - "the Wooden Prince" is my favorite piece up antill now. Apart from of cource Concert for orchestra and piano concerto's 2 and 3. But other Bartok compositions will undoubtedly follow - glad to have this in my collection. The only thing I didn't like where the liner-notes; these are all about Pierre Boulez and not about Bartok - but that is a detail that can be overlooked.

Bartok is viewed by Boulez as one of the key composers of the 20th century, along with Debussy, Schoenberg, Berg, Webern and Stravinsky, and after listening to this collection you can see why, He and Stravinsky added huge rhythmic drive to the vocabulary of classical music. This is a really well played and well recorded collection that presents Bartok at his best, highly recommended.

Best modern classical music box you can buy, certainly if you like Bartok! Timing of director Pierre Boulez is great, as is the sound quality of the whole box. Sheer pleasure for modest money for many hours in your life! (Of course it helps if you have good hifi)

I’ve always loved Boulez’s interpretations of early 20th century music and this album does not disappoint. He had a great ear for texture and sonority which brings these wonderful pieces to life. A this price, it’s a ‘must-have’.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raccolta avvincente e stimolante
Reviewed in Italy on 24 October 2021

Outstanding set of recordings by Boulez and 3 of the best orchestras on the planet - Chicago, Berlin, and London. The precision of the playing is remarkable, and as we know, Boulez was a perfectionist with a concrete vision of any work he approached. I find his tempi, phrasing, and rhythmic decisiveness assist in clearly articulating Bartók's structures. Highly recommended for any Bartók enthusiast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Boulez, maestro bartokiano
Reviewed in Mexico on 1 September 2015
