- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 September 2015Perfect holiday read!! I took this on holiday with me as I knew it would be light and easy to get into and the perfect summer read. I love the characters in this series- they are so relatable and identifiable with. They are just your average 'non pretentious' family and I love the dynamics and relationships between them. The setting for this novel is a cruise ship and although not all of the characters go, the change of setting as it switches from those back home and those on the ship works well. The lead characters here seem to be Chelsea and Adam and Jane and her friend who are new characters to this novel and also on board the cruise ship. Jane also has a hidden connection to the Bensons and her narrative supports the main plot and helps move it along.
I personally identify with Chelsea the most as she works for a fashion magazine and is really into fashion and her career but she seems to have changed slightly in this novel and is desperate for her boyfriend Adam to propose. I also loved the reactions of Jacqui and Dave to the cruise ship, as they are not used to having money and unaccustomed to the finer things in life. You really get a sense of what it is like on board the ship and what this sort of holiday is like, the food, activities etc. You also get a strong sense of what the cites are like they visit and Manby has researched the tourist side well.
I will continue to read the Proper Family Series as long as Manby writes them. I just love this family from super cute Jack to slightly abrasive Ronnie, super cool Chelsea and the posh big sister, lady of the Manner Annabel.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 October 2016Easy holiday read although a bit predictable. As I had just came home from a cruise I enjoyed revisiting some of the ports of call on the family cruise in the book. Very likeable characters.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 July 2015The next instalment of the Benson family story is here! Remember how Granddad Bill was always threatening to win the lottery? Well this time he does. Being the close knit and enthusiastic family they are, some of them decide that they will go on a cruise around the Med. How do they get on? Well no spoilers here but will Adam propose to Chelsea as everyone expects him to? Will Jane ever get off the boat and allow herself to enjoy life after her tragic loss? What will happen to poor Ted?
This is the sort of family we probably would all like to be a part of. Down to earth, funny, kind.
I liked this new book a lot, it was a smooth and enjoyable read. I have been on a number of cruises and loved them all. This book made me want to go on another one - and soon!!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 September 2015Another great book from Chrissie Manby. This is the third book in the "Proper Family" saga and I did think she couldn't do anything more with the story, but I was wrong. It is an easy read, but still a really good story. You don't need to have read the other books to enjoy this book. Would definitely recommend.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 August 2015Another excellent book by Chrissie Manby. The third book in this series, you just grow to love this family more and more especially little Jack. My heart skipped a beat when I thought Granddad had died, I wasn't ready to lose his character yet. I can't wait for the next book in the series, I love a good wedding!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 August 2020It was great catching up with the Benson's and I especially enjoyed this book as it was set on a cruise ship and it reminded me of my past cruise holidays. It took me back to my time on board and even some of the stops were the same as I'd done.
Great storyline as always, following on from the previous books. I look forward to the next one.
