About the author

During her downtime Deb likes escaping from reality (and housework) to the bondu. This is where her characters and their stories are born.
She enjoys writing in different genres and this could be the reason why she’s not a New York Times best seller yet (though there could be lots of other reasons too.) Deb’s series include the supernatural suspense Afterlife books, the first of which was inspired by ants, Unlikely Soldiers (based on some of her experiences in the British Army) and The Island Dog Squad series of novellas. She’s also written children’s books about Jason the penguin and Barry the reindeer, a novel about netball players, as well as a non-fiction book about a boy born to be different (co-written with Zak’s Mum, Joanne). There are also two novels in the Aliens Guide series. Her latest books, The Island Expats, are cosy mysteries set on the fictional island of Souvia.
Her current work in progress is a fun read (not) about how she coped with cancer.
Deb’s husband, Allan, is also a weather refugee and they live in Cyprus with their rescue dog, Sandy.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 December 2018Wonderful read. All from the prospective of a dog that has lost her memory. When she is found on the side of the road, hurt, battered and starving she is taken to a rescue. There she has a roommate who avoids being adopted but she doesn't. Her human parents are kind, gentle and loving whilst their friends are also. But it is their friends dogs that are the biggest surprise. They seem to know her and as she settles in the memories start coming back. Memories of a military base where she was taught special skills until the day that a little pug turned up. A pug with a mission for them. Rescuing dogs from humans who mistreated them and kept crazy dogs around to kill, maim any objectors. Their mission is to go in, rescue the dogs and get out. Will they succeed? What about the special friendship she has formed with one of the men in the funny pyjamas? Is this the end of their attempts to rescue dogs held in terrible conditions?
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 June 2018This is a story for dog lovers and young readers 10+. At times it is comical but then heartwrenching. Sandy is a rescue dog, the poor thing found almost drown as a puppy but luckily discovered at just the right time and taken in by military personnel.
Sandy as a young dog endures some horrendous experiences, and ends up losing her memory. Hence the story is not for the faint hearted. Happily she is taken in by a wonderful couple Ellie and Ben. Slowly her memory returns but along with it come terrible nightmares of a past life.
The story will keep you on the edge of your seat, and make you marvel at how clever Sandy is.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 August 2018Being a dog lover attracted me to this book but it takes a good author and a captivating story to make me write a review. I was taken on an adventure, I loved all the characters, humans and animals, the subtle weaving of the world's we live in and our interdependence in each other. A wonderful story with remarkable insight, I look forward to the pack's next adventure.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 July 2018A great story, easy read that kept you wanting to know more. I enjoyed the reoccurring story of where Sandy came from how she came to be where she is today. Telling the story through her eyes as a dog is very imaginative. As a dog owner I often wonder if this is true! I look forward to the next book in this tale.:)

5.0 out of 5 stars Island Dog squad #1
This is a fun book. I needed something easy, short and with a dog in it. I have. Read all of Spencer Quinn’s Bernie Short Mysteries which has the dog telling the whole story! I truly enjoy them and they are full stories. Deb’s book is similar but very short, like a novella. Love the glimpse of military training of dogs and their multiple uses! Sandy is a sweet dog. I have already bought the next two stories, so I will read them!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I’m a dog person...
And cat person, apparently as I have about 8 of them (unintentionally). But if you want to read a really good story, this is your book. It’s told from the dog’s point of view and that’s interesting all unto itself, but the story it tells is really original. Advance warning, you’re gonna fall in love with Fish/Sandy. ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars A great dog story
From the perspective of a dog owner you will never again look at your dog in the same light. I always knew my dogs talked to each other. Deb McEwan seems to have captured that in Sandy's Story. Now I don't feel so crazy. 😋

5.0 out of 5 stars Good dog story
Very interesting story line. Did a great job tying the history of the dog with the present. The only complaint is it wasn’t long enough. Good lead for the series
