Blue SunRise: A Riveting Character-driven Hard Sci-fi Adventure (Blue Sun Space Opera Book 1) Kindle Edition
Kirkus Review--Overall, the book is reminiscent of a cinematic space epic by James Cameron or Roland Emmerich, in which one gets carried away by the staggering adventure, wonder, and danger of it all.

About the author

I was born in New Orleans and spent most of my early life in Louisiana under the quiet and careful guidance of the nuns at Sacred Heart Grammar School. It was terrifying. To this day, I will not allow my wife to wear a black and white dress. I then attended Holy Savior Menard Central High School (seriously, that’s the name) where I learned to fear men with the honorific “Coach.” Having learned that lesson and survived to graduation, I went to LSU in Baton Rouge and managed to graduate in just five and half short years. It was one of the worst mistakes of my life. Not the college or the degree—the graduating from college. I had no idea how much fun I was having until I was no longer having so much fun. If I had known what I know now, I would still be attending the university, having amassed roughly 10,000 undergraduate hours and several million dollars in student loan debt.
In spite of my best efforts at sabotage, my small business in Memphis is thriving, and, at the age of 70, I still go to work every day to shake my fist and yell at the workers.
I have a small house in the woods where I live with my wife, three cats, three dogs, twelve chickens, and a few tropical fish. The dogs will occasionally pay attention to me. Please buy my book so I can get more dogs.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2024Both this book and Blue Sunset are really worth the read. I have just come from reading the 6 Dune novels, the 4 Hyperion books, Peter Hamilton's Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained. I loved them all, and wasn't expecting much from Blue Sunrise/Sunset, but they're darn entertaining sci-fi reads. Good sci-fi technologies and concepts, but even better is the character development. Overman does a great job of developing about 9 characters in the book, and you really feel like you know them by the end. I miss reading about them now that I've finished Blue Sunrise/Sunset. I'm anxiously waiting the third book in this seriew coming out in Fall of 2024. This guy is a very good sci-fi author.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2024This one very nearly got five stars from me, and if Amazon had a half star capability, I would give it 4.5 stars.
In the desired sci-fi way, the book defines some aliens, and puts humans in their path, setting up a “What’s going to happen” question. The way this is done is skillful, and riveting.
First, in alien definition the author creates two different species that are as different as night and day, yet both intelligent, slightly antagonistic, very intertwined and thus stuck with each other. Aliens are creatively built, and are used to explore interesting philosophical questions about the nature of existence. The author also builds a little tension between the two races, who are ostensibly supposed to get along with each other.
Second, the encounter of what will happen when the two races collide with humans stays a mystery just long enough, and develops the outcome at a great pace. Once the secret is revealed, there’s plenty of action and the humans involved for the most part do smart things. There’s one place in the story where entirety of the earth is described as acting with more unity than I think they would in the situation in real life, but that is about the only sin the book commits. Well, that and not making clear where the author sits on whether he thinks religion is helpful / good, or holds it with disdain. Maybe it is not his obligation to do so, though I think he could have used ”religion is good” for good value in the story.
I actually only found this book because I received an advance review copy of the sequel, so I scrambled to read the first book before the sequel. Given the quality of this first book, I am now anxious to go & read the second, and provide my review for it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2023Tennessee author Gregg Overman earned his degrees in zoology and chemistry from LSU, served as a chemist, then founded The River City Soap Company, creating industrial detergents. BLUE SUNRISE is his debut novel, and a masterful sci-fi creation it is! Overman sets the tone in a note before the story opens - ‘And on the slopes of Cheyenne Mountain above NORAD, in parks and backyards across half the earth, in the streets and from windows with the curtains barely parted, people raised their eyes an trembled at the sight of Mars burning with a pale, blue flame in the sky above them.’ His eloquent prose opens the portal to this immersing story, condensed as follows: ‘A drug addict in need of detox stands in line to leave for work on the moon. An old alien debates a young member of the race that has enslaved him and his kind. The first expedition to Mars struggles to unravel the mysteries of the red planet. Light sparkles briefly on the very edge of our solar system. Many thousands of light years away an alien race has stolen the science they need to “protect” themselves. Safety demands the annihilation of all other intelligent life. They have a method for it, and it has worked perfectly for over one million years. They have found Earth.’
Fascinating premises and very well sculpted characters propel this technothriller - a completely satisfying initial volume of a promised series. Highly recommended
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2023My actual rating for this book is about 4.5 but I believe in rounding up to encourage authors, and it feels like this author has potential. The half star is because I would love to see deeper characters so I can relate to them more, a faster pace because I almost gave up in the first half, and more expansion on the creative & original plot ideas.
Things I enjoyed are the writing style felt solid and easy to follow, the aliens are original and an interesting concept, and the plot lines converging at the end have a nice symmetry. I had guessed most of the plot lines by the middle, but they were still interesting enough I continued reading to see if I was right.
I would be interested in reading a sequel if one was written. It would be fun to see humanity use the events as a catalyst to work together and spring forward. It would also be interesting to see the outcome for the trees, and to explore how the three would interact in conflict.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2024Great story. Great character development. Lots of edge-of-your-seat action on Earth, the Moon, Mars, & in deep space. It'd be a 5 star review save for things like: 'plane' instead of 'plain'; 'to' instead of 'too'; 'there' instead of 'their'; 'ce n'être pas possible' instead of 'ce n'est pas possible'. The improper choice of English homonyms & the improper conjugation of a basic French verb are cringe-worthy editing distractions.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2024This was a pretty good book (I downloaded the Kindle version.)
However, every so often there was a technical error that knocked me out of the storyline. At one point the word "shown" was used, when the correct word was "shone." There were also a couple of instances where the possessive "its" and the contraction "it's" were swapped.
I doubt these were errors by the author, but don't know who to blame.
Without these interruptions, my rating would have been a 4.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well told first act of a space opera.
Though the hard science aspect may put off some readers, I welcome the placement of science back in fiction. An Ingenious twist on an attack on earth by aliens, and the nature of the beast. Well writen and developed plot. The only thing holding back a fifth star were the characters. If only the development of the characters was up to the rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Frighteningly Good
Hard SF, a paranoid and aggressive race send anti-matter-powered missiles to destroy Earth - simply on principle to avoid any nebulous future threat. Furious, almost suicidal improvisation ensues to fool the semi-intelligent missiles into focussing on another target. An unlikely hero takes steps to ensure his children's survival.
This is very well-written, imaginative and, given its initial premise, scarily credible. My only criticism is that someone who can come up with something as clever and convincing as this should know the difference between discrete and discreet and shoo-in vs shoe-in. This happens so early in the book that I almost stopped reading thinking it was going to be yet another semi-illiterate Kindle Unlimited potboiler. For God's sake, KU, get some decent proofreaders!!!
