Product description

Follow up to 2006's number one 'Empire', the third album from the English alternative rock band is an electronica-indie rock style fusion: a mix of intense melodies, electro-punk riffs and kaleidoscopic lullabies. The album includes the singles 'Fast Fuse', 'Vlad the Impaler' and 'Fire'.

To start, this album is definitely worth buying. I was not a Kasabian fan before, but now I am.
A step-by-step guide to this album:

    1. Underdog - a sound song with brilliant guitars and drums, with memorable vocals. Worth paying the whole fiver for this one song - 10/10

    2. Where Did All The Love Go? - a flowing song with good vocals and drums, but not fabulous compared to Underdog - 8.5/10

3.Swarfiga - a short song with no vocals, but rhythmic and well placed with cohesion to both Where Did All The Love Go? and Fast Fuse - 9/10

    4. Fast Fuse - what Kasabian where formed for. No faults at all. Fast-paced and edgy - 10/10

    5. Take Aim - takes a while to start, but good vocals and solid guitar makes it a good song - 9/10

    6. Thick As Thieves - rhythmic and lazy, but in a good way - 9.5/10

    7. West Ryder Silver Bullet - starts with a woman's voice, and a very memorable tune with fabulous rhythm, but takes a while to grow on you - 9.5/10

    8. Vlad The Impaler - bruising and thumping compared to the other tracks on this album, and certainly very energetic, but worth listening to the end - 9/10

    9. Ladies and Gentlemen (Roll the Dice) - nice and calm compared to Vlad the Impaler, and quite stylish, but not as gripping - 8.5/10

    10. Secret Alphabets - again, very calm, but should be further up in the album - 9/10

    11. Fire - flows brilliantly, then goes into a brilliant chorus led by fabulous drums - 9/10

    12. Happiness - gentle and very calm, then drums come in and lead a very beautiful song. A fitting finale - 9/10

(p.s this was not written by the name above, but by his 11-year-old son, me)

This is a sonic journey unlike any other. With its blend of rock, electronic, and psychedelic influences, the album takes listeners on a thrilling ride from start to finish. Tracks like "Fire" and "Underdog" are anthemic and infectious, while deeper cuts like "Secret Alphabets" showcase the band's experimental side. From the epic orchestration to the intricate production, every aspect of the album feels meticulously crafted. "West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum" is a bold and ambitious statement from Kasabian, solidifying their place as one of the most innovative bands of their generation.

    Great album. Highly recommend

I have to say that despite being a massive Kasabian fan, I thought Empire was a bit disappointing. It's not that it was a particularly bad album, there were some top tracks on it, I just thought it was hastily put together, rush released after the success of the debut and the live reputation that had been earning.

WRPLA is completely different. Almost 3 years after Empire it arrives after a few setbacks. Serge himself said that the album was originally ready mid-late last year but they weren't totally happy and decided to re-work some things to improve it. I'm glad they did, as this album is a much more focussed, well produced and enjoyable experience than the previous one.

It seems that the band are pretty intent on removing the "lad-rock" tag they have been given by certain areas on WRPLA. To me, there is only Underdog, Fast Fuse and Fire which would fit nicely into the debut, instead the overall volume and tempo has been toned down. Not that they needed to however, this suggestion has always been lazy and ill-advised....nevertheless it makes for a very diverse and intriguing album.

Things start off in typical Kasabian fashion, Underdog is a massive, cocky and in-your-face Rock n Roll masterpiece, I'm sure you have heard the Sony avdert in which the song is the background for. There are shades of Club Foot and LSF in there, this song could easily fit on "Kasabian".

Where Did All The Love Go? is a refresing new angle for Kasabian, very melodic and chilled out. The nearest thing I could compare it to is By My Side from Empire, although that would be doing it a disservice really, it's much better than that. Swarfiga and Fast Fuse follow, the former being a 2 minute instrumental, it's more of an interlude though to be honest, a bassline roams around a constant beat before building and slowing down. It only serves as an introduction to Fast Fuse though, which is a fast paced groove, I feel that this one really showcases Tom's vocal improvements, he sounds really good on this.

But what about the mellow efforts? West Ryder Silver bullet is like a much improved version of La Belle Le Bete off Down in Albion by Babyshambles, an intimate vocal between Tom and some american actress, it's very clever and very un-kasabian like. Happiness has been compared to The Doberman off Empire but I wouldn't agree with that, whilst Doberman was a massive kitchen-sink type closer, Happiness is reserved, beautiful for want of a better word. It sees Serge finally nail a vocal and backed by some female vocalists really adds a touching end to a varied album.

There is room for improvement though. In my personal opinion they have kind of neglected their darker side. Tracks like ID and Running Battle of the debut are amongst my favourites, there is nothing like that on here, it is just personal preference I guess but I feel these type of tracks really gave Kasabian and extra something. Not to worry, WRPLA is one of the best albums you'll hear this year.

Like this album. Some great tracks on it.

Enjoy Kasabian while they last. They're big - too big for their boots these days and it's going to destroy them. But before they get swallowed in the quicksand of their own hubris, they've still got some great music to offer us.

Never mind the decadent cover and the pompous title; on this album Kasabian are trying to extend their post-Britpop dance-rock style and are doing it very well. They sometimes wear their influences rather too heavily - Ray Davies won't file a plagiarism suit till he's worked out exactly which Kinks tune 'Thick As Thieves' is a copy of - but the quality of the songs makes up for such occasional lapses. And with 'Swarfiga' they give a welcome nod to one of their more obscure influences, the marvellous krautrock pioneers Neu!.

The single 'I'm On Fire' is absurdly catchy without being insubstantial and 'Fast Fuse' is a terrific uptempo rock number. There's plenty of variety but the CD doesn't lose consistency and can be played (nearly) all the way through. I say "nearly" because the only dud song is the final track 'Happiness', which is so unbearably dreary that I haven't managed to listen to it all the way through yet.

Five stars? Yeah, they've earned them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muy buen disco
Reviewed in Mexico on 22 March 2018
