Review
"Fast zombies...yeah you're screwed. You were the top APEX predator in the world working for the US military, but now 1000+ miles away from home, limited resources, team dwindled down to less than a squad, stuck in a world where chaos rules...the predator just became the prey falling down to the bottom of the ladder. A must read."

- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2013The strong story that I praised in W.J. Lundy's first book, "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot," continues here in the sequel, "Tales of the Forgotten." Lundy is a fine writer and uses his current military experience to great effect here as his tough little crew struggle to not only survive but to stake out a place of refuge for the near future. It is always refreshing when a book's characters actually use their minds to make rational decisions. And here they do, in spades. Although the horrific reality they find themselves in is nearly unimaginable, the chillingly realistic ways in which they respond to it makes everything work. I found myself second-guessing the characters and weighing their options right along with them as I read, just as if I was on their team and facing the same risks. It is hard to be more hooked in or to ask any more of a book than that.
I thought the way life's definitions changed for the team as they began to realize the extent of their new reality was a wonderful touch. All of the old war-on-terror political evaluations fell by the wayside along with military perceptions of rank and mission and obedience. Former enemies and their interlocked ideologies melt in the deadly cauldron of this new, relentless enemy. A zombie novel that makes you think as well as feel - truly fun stuff.
Mr. Lundy builds in all kinds of new but very reasonable wrinkles in this next novel as our forgotten military team, and their new dependents, try to comprehend the true worldwide situation, if they can discover it, and gauge whether there is any hope left.
Journeys are the lifeblood of these types of novels and the one in "Tales of the Forgotten" works extremely well. The purpose of the trip makes sense and when the purpose changes, that makes sense too. It is so refreshing to see solid plotting for a change. And on the road trip we not only get to watch the characters grow and change but we also get to observe and wonder about the changing behavior of the Zombies (okay, "Primals," as they're called here).
I do not usually like to read book series. I prefer standalone books that spin their story, weave their magic, and then wrap it all up. I made an exception with "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" initially since I knew the author was current military and I have a son in the Marines who spent weeks in an LAV (light armored vehicle) out in the deserts of Afghanistan. I'm glad I started the series. It has been a surprisingly great ride for me despite my hesitation at the start, and I'm kind of self-conscious to admit it. Well, while I'm at it, I might as well admit that I have already started the next book in the series, "Only the Dead Live Forever."
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2024Oddly enough, I read the first "book" only because I'm married to a Lundy. I'm not one to give any kind of book review, just a nother form of a book report. That said.
Not a Zombie book, it is a Primal Rage book. Well worth the time to read. Don't pass it by just because you "think" its not what you normally read, I only grabbed it because of the name of the author.
I really thought the ending would be different. Nice when you expect one thing and a nother thing happens instead.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2014Just one great read.
Sgt. Thompson and his men have been at the shelter for over a month. There are civilians coming in all the time. Both Taliban and Al Queda are now allies. The Primal virus is in full swing and anyone bitten or scratched will turn. Those who engineered this catastrophe had no idea what they would be unleashing. One surely hopes they were the first victims.
Sean and Brooks the two SEALS are going to leave. The SEALS are very capable guys. They have loads of experience and training and that training will be a godsend in the coming days.
Both Brooks and Sean ask Brad to go with them. After serious thought Brad decides he's gotta get out of the shelter and find out just what the hell is going on. He's hoping they will find military somewhere. Miltary with commanders who can give them a clue about everything.
Hasan of the Taliban decides to go with them. He's a native and has traveled extensively in the mountains. He knows the trails, the villages and Towns. Both Sean and Brooks are glad he's coming with them. Brad knows Hasan is one welcome addition.
The first stop in the FOB Bremerton. Its overrun with Primals but are able to stop and get supplies. Ammunition, MRE's, batteries for the Sat phone that they can charge in the vehicle and water.
They run into quite a few primals and on the way to the next city the Sat phone rings. A Col Cloud starts directing them on where to go. A Col Cloud that none of them trust as far as they can throw the bastard.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has Brad, Hasan, Sean, Brooks, Primals, the CIA, Col Cloud, a man they are tasked with capturing Aziz by name, people on the run, hidden caves, mountains and Brad and his team getting a chopper ride.
Just one awesome book. Five Stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2013Well, this book proves "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" was no fluke. This author can write, and he can tell a darn good zombie, sorry, primal story. The continuing adventures of Brad, Sean, and Brooks lands them in one tight spot after another but the group does not make stupid mistakes or panic, holding to their training but adapting to the situations as they come. I won't give any spoilers, but this story opens up their area of operation a little bit and gives our guys a glimpse of the bigger picture of what is happening beyond the borders of Afghanistan.
The book is not without surprises, and one of the biggest is how much I liked Hassan, their guide and admitted Taliban fighter. Another good point is that these guys are hardened troopers but also keep their basic humanity, trying to help any survivors they come across while sticking to their mission of exploration and discovery. Credit to the author for not give you a cop-out cliffhanger ending, but thank goodness there is a Book Three in the works because you are really rooting for them to keep on motoring.
If you like your zombie fiction written in a realistic way, then try this book and the previous novella on for size. I am hoping the next book is a little better edited, but this one has fewer mistakes than the first. That issue aside, you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read
The WTF series is not for deep thinkers but for people who enjoy a fast-paced apocalyptic story including zombies.
Don't expect deep character development but strap yourself in for some good old zombie hunting military style.
