"James Herriot meets Driving over Lemons"

When dark, sinister clouds loom, Victoria and Joe find themselves facing life-changing decisions. Happily, silver linings also abound in this, the fifth Old Fools chronicle.
A fresh new face joins the cast of familiar characters but the return of a bad penny may be more than some can handle. What does the future hold for the Spanish village of El Hoyo and the two old fools?

"Full of warmth, laughter, and some emotional tugs. I gave 5 stars before but Victoria just gets better, so how can I improve on that rating? 5 stars again but the BIGGEST, twinkliest stars." -- Julie Haigh, Amazon Top 1000 Reviewer

Oh my goodness, I just devoured this book! Victoria Twead's latest book, TWO OLD FOOLS IN TURMOIL, doesn't disappoint. I've loved all of her Old Fools books, so was wondering if there was really anything else interesting she could write about. The answer is YES! It's funny, sad, mysterious, scary, and romantic, all from a light-hearted point of view, so how could it go wrong? This latest Victoria Twead book is even better than the previous ones! Thank you, "Veeky," for sharing your adventures with us. I love it and am looking forward to the next interesting phase of your life.

I don't know how Victoria Twead does it. Reading this latest memoir moved my emotions in many directions, from smiles and giggles down to a huge lump in my throat and moist eyes. I love her ability to make the people around her so vivid in the reader's mind, you feel like you know them personally and would recognise them in the street. She conveys emotions vividly too. In this book, particularly, the tenderness, love and strength of the relationship between Victoria and her husband, Joe, are tangible as they face their trials and tribulations. It's a quite extraordinary read.

To my friend I have never met!

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 15

I have read all of Victoria's books or should I say "Beeky's" ... anyway! to my review:

I love Victoria's books as there are a reading experience that you get sucked into, you become part of her family's life; you feel like a distant relative. You want to be part of it!

Victoria's books are always so well written that you are living the experience... perhaps in a past tense; which with all experiences, gives hindsight; which allows reflection to look on the humourious side. I love all of Victorias books because they make me laugh - in a good way... however, this latest book, I started out laughing but 3/4 way through I could not stop crying, I felt every experience so intimately, (Thanks to Victoria's fantastic prose) however, it did have some personal renosance!

I follow Victoria on her F.B page so already new some of the outcomes of her episodes, she has such a gift for story telling that it was so emotional and tense, even although I knew what was to happen.

I love it has worked out so well for her and Joe, but it is the end of a chapter... I hope the next will only bring lots of happiness.

Victoria explains how 'Chickens' was hatched:

"I'm famous for my lists and records. I can't help myself; I think I inherited the record-keeping gene from my father. Every day I make a note of the weather, the temperature, the first snowdrop, the day the ants fly, the exchange rate of the euro, everything. I make packing lists, holiday lists, 'To Do' lists and 'Joe, Will You Please' lists. I even make lists of lists. My nickname at work was Schindler.

Also, I have terrible difficulty throwing anything away. I find my heart racing and my fingers clamp possessively on the object in question. After all, a rusty hostess trolley, or broken watch, or a 1996 calendar, or whatever, may come in useful some day... So I rarely delete old emails and have diaries dating back years.

Both these dubious character traits of mine, for a pleasant change, proved really useful and helped 'Chickens' to hatch.

Moving to Spain was undeniably a culture shock. Every new day produced events either hilarious or heart-warming. Food suddenly tasted better, human behaviour was more fascinating, local events more interesting. It was like seeing in colour for the first time, and the book began bubbling in my head.

Of course, Joe often lost patience with me, and rightly so. 'Stop dreaming, and concentrate! Hold that ladder steady or I'm going to break a leg in a minute!' But the book was relentless. As soon as I could, I unearthed all my records, notes, old emails to friends, and began to write.

It's funny where life takes you... When I was a little girl and asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always answered, 'A zoo-keeper.' No, I never realised that ambition, but life in Spain has not been that far removed. Okay, I agree, chickens, mules and all the other animals (including humans) I wrote about may not be very exotic. But their behaviour was just as riveting as that of any grizzly bear or meerkat.

As I wrote, the book made me laugh and cry. I love Spain. I love the Spanish people. I love Spanish food. I hope all this shines through in my writing, even when I'm describing some of the less pleasant things that happened to us."

I started this series as an audiobook listening on my work commute. Was intrigued by the title. After book one I was hooked. The author is quite talented, sharing life with us initially from a sleepy Spanish village in the first books then on to Bahrain and now in Spain again. I want to go to El Hoyo and sit on the roof top terrace with the Author and her husband. Eat tapas and drink some of Paco’s wine. I have already purchased the next book and I’m hoping she keeps writing.

There just ins't enough I can say about her writing, it captures you. The story flows and pictures just are painted from them. I can read her books forever. I really can't wait until her next book is out. She is funny, quirky, loving, honest, brutal and dedicated. The relationship between Joe and Victoria is magical and real life, same as her relationship with her family in Australia. I don't remember how I found you but it truly is a blessing. The characters are well drawn out and I always find my self laughing. "Two Old Fools Down Under” was a little different as they dealt with with Joe's serious health problems as well as the major renovation of their home. I felt I was on the beach each morning as Lola (the new Spoodle puppy) and Vicky walk with their new human and animal friends! If you have read all of Veekys other books this is a must. So much happend in the 11th year in El Hoya. They know everyone in town and just like Mrs Bucket having someone after her Vicky has the Mayor pining away. The time is coming for their trip to Australia to see their daughter but Joe isn’t feeling well and says he is going to England to the Dr. Vicky is very stressed but sooo happy to be with her grandaughter. Just as you see on TV she finds the dangerous creatures!! Time passes and she heads back to Spain and Joe does also. Spring has come to Spain so it is beautiful and village life is popping. We have a new love pop up then break up, Lola is back, a new priest in town. Decision is made to move to Australia. Much more going on but if you haven’t read the book why should I give away all the secrets. Get the book and read it for yourself.

While this book has the same zest for Andalusia there is some heartbreak. You live the life you have always wanted and then, suddenly, you realize you are getting older and your priorities have to change. That's what happens in this book, Two Old Fools in
Turmoil. Joe gets sick and while part of Victoria's heart is in Spain; the other part is in Australia.

Joe decided he needed to go back to England for medical tests. He wanted to go where he could understand what the doctors were saying. What surprised me is that Victoria didn't accompany him. I know that they are long time partners and not married, but I still thought it strange that Victoria went on with her plans while Joe went to England for months. Twice. Maybe more often.

I have enjoyed all five of these Old Fools books. This is a good transition book and I look forward to the next in the series.

In Two Old Fools in Turmoil by Victoria Twead, her husband Joe is concerned about his shortness of breath, and they decide that the best doctors are in the UK, though they still live in El Hoyo, Spain. They spend time apart while he goes to the UK for medical attention and she travels to Australia to be with her daughter, her husband and granddaughter, Indy. After both return to Spain, Joe and Vicky decide to move to Aus, as they call it, to be closer to family and watch their grandchild grow up.

They realize that they have had eleven precious years in Spain, so they enjoy a few more rooftop terrace sunsets, daily walks and swims and a special wedding of their next-door neighbor's daughter who weds the village millionaire’s grandson. The day after the wedding, a neighbor’s child is missing and found in an old mine which brings the villagers even closer together.

They continue to make painful decisions as they sell their home and say their goodbyes. Vicky is happy to see certain young couples decide to bond before she left Spain for good. Two Old Fools in Turmoil ends with Joe going back to the UK for further medical treatment and Vicky forging ahead to Aus to look for a permanent home and he plans to join her three months later after being cleared.

I was so looking forward to reading this latest book from Victoria Twead. Once I started I genuinely couldn’t put it down. It was marvellous to be back in El Hoyo and to discover all the things that had been going on. As ever it’s a wonderfully entertaining account of rural Spanish life and it’s very obvious that Victoria and Joe love the life they have made there. She writes with such warmth, humour and affection about her villager friends and it’s clear they also hold her in great esteem.
Unfortunately life isn’t always straightforward and unexpectedly can change the plans that you have made. This is exactly what happens to Victoria and Joe. They had been planning a visit to Australia to visit their daughter, son in law and granddaughter Indy but plans had to be altered and Victoria visited Australia on her own.
Personal issues make them decide to sell their beloved home and move permanently to Australia. However they have on last summer in El Hoyo which was so beautifully described as they were hoarding up memories. It was a heartbreaking decision and it’s certainly a bittersweet chapter in their lives. I laughed and cried and there is much to laugh at and enjoy. As well as that there are some marvellous recipes which I really want to try out. If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would. I’m already looking forward to reading about their life ‘down under’

The latest volume in the Two Old Fools series. In order not to spoil things for future readers I will just say that I not only laughed but also cried a little but won't say why. Those who have finished the book will no doubt feel the same.
I have lived in Girona and Barcelona provinces since 1975, after graduating in Chinese from London University the same year and not being able to find a job in the UK.. Luckily I was able to get a place on an international exchange programme and was assigned to the University in Barcelona, mainly because of "A" level Spanish that I had kept up to scratch. My whole working life has taken place here in Spain and my life here is certainly very different from Victoria and Joe's, which is one of the reasons I enjoy the books so much. Thank you Victoria for so much enjoyment, your flexible attitude to life, your insight into people's characters and life in a foreign land. Trying to pace myself to read this book in instalments was useless, once I had started I could not stop until I had finished. Another wonderfully written chapter in the lives of Victoria and Joe Twead, their family and friends, has had me glued to the pages of this book. Often humorous, often poignant, Victoria’s story continues on through their turmoil in an easy, comfortable read. All the characters within their story feel like old friends and I am as sorry as they are to be leaving them in Spain. Although I refer to the book as a story, it’s clear that this is their real life documented for everyone to see, and for that we are thankful. Thanks to their generosity, Victoria has been able to make her family and friends feel just as if they were my own people. I hope the Tweads are generous enough to let us peep inside the next stage of their lives together, as I can’t imagine life without knowing what is to follow.

I finally got around to reading Two Old Fools in Turmoil and it didn't disappoint. Like all the previous books, this one was very entertaining, I loved reading about the adventures and mishaps you encountered along the way, and all the characters in the village. Well done!
