Travel North America: (and Avoid Being a Tourist) Flexibound – June 15, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
The future of travel is set to keep us closer to home, encourage us to slow down, expand our minds and bring us closer to nature. Following the success of their first book Travel Anywhere, Fathom's latest book Travel North America pays homage to the stories, histories, landscapes and cultures of the vast and diverse North American continent.
Tapping into a treasure trove of time-tested recommendations (both classic and little-known) and a network of interesting people (chefs, novelists, designers, innkeepers, musicians), Fathom's founders Jeralyn Gerba and Pavia Rosati provide inspiration and practical trip-planning advice for modern travelers looking to rediscover North America in the wake of the coronavirus. With a focus on the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, Travel North America includes chapters such as "Brave New World—The post-pandemic travel mindset", "Follow Nature's Lead", "Second Cities Take First Place", "Road Tripping" and "Giving Back—Humanitarian travel in North America'.
Presented in a beautifully designed package, Travel North America will show you that now has never been a better time to plan your next vacation, not too far from home.

Editorial Reviews
Review
""It’s a better country for having Jeralyn Gerba and Pavia Rosati create books like this." – HeadButler,
"“What if you also want to travel without doing the same old same old? Enter ?Travel North America: (and Avoid Being a Tourist)?. Authors Jeralyn Gerba and Pavia Rosati have compiled a travel guide that acknowledges the major trends of where people want to go, and both leans into them and subverts them. A pleasurable read, with gorgeous photos throughout and funny asides, you'll feel less like you're being shamed for your love of boutique hotels over roughing it in the wild, and more like you're in safe, understanding hands.” – Hunker,
"“Anyone seeking a dose of American pride need look no further than Travel North America (and Avoid Being a Tourist), which is equal parts travel book and guide to life, a where's-where of our rich continent woven with an urgent call to exist "more responsibly, sustainably, and gently." Taken together it is a most hopeful and moving portrait of the magic and majesty of our country that feels timely indeed.” – SteamLine Luggage,
"“With guidance, tips and reviews, Travel North America: (And Avoid Being a Tourist) provides plenty of information for those able to visit the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean; and those who want to research their future trip once borders open up more.” – CoolHunting,

- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2021Travel North America is extra special because it helps you figure out new ways to think about traveling. It’s not a typical guidebook of the eat here, see this, sleep here variety — there are more than enough of those on the market, not to mention content via the web. This book is much more creative and clever in its approach to travel and travel experiences -- it's an inspiration tool for figuring where I want to go next, and *how*. For example, the authors list places where you can connect with nature, where you can travel alone, where you can learn about the continent’s rich, and, yes, complicated history. Another differentiator: The focus is on independent and local places, not on chains, and for me, that’s always a better alternative — for hotels, for meals, and for things to do/see. Can't recommend it enough. It's also a great looking addition to any coffee table or book shelf!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2021I love to travel, and so I thought what could a travel book help me with, in ways that I couldn't find on the internet? I was skeptical.. And have been overjoyed every time I open its pages. What I love about this book is the way the content is broken down - almost by my moods. "The Joy of Slowing Down" and "Follow Nature's Lead" or sometimes I may want "Bright Lights Big Cities." Each section has gorgeous photography and easy to read snips of information (and thank you for the larger font!) which make it less of a time commitment and more of an exploration. This book is a must for anyone who wants to uncover the unexpected.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2021As soon as I opened this book, I doubted its utility. It's not organized by region as you would expect a travel guide to be. Rather its set up like a magazine, with a single page containing advice about New Mexico, Barbados and New York in one go.
I am going to Alaska later this year, and attempted to use the book for "inspiration". There is no Alaska or West coast section, so I went to the appendix. Under Alaska is "Alaskan Walruses".
Moved to D for Denali and A for Anchorage. Both listings were less than a paragraph. Not helpful for real travel.
The only way I can imagine to use this book is to read through the entire 276 pages and make notes about the places that appeal to you. In a map or doc or other research method. If you book a trip to that place, now you can cross reference your notes from the book...the book becoming moot to your documentation method. With google and instagram seconds away, I can't imagine many people taking this path.
Returning this immediately.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2021The perfect travel guide for anyone who wants to discover hidden gems and travel with style. We booked a trip based on a recommendation and were not disappointed. We’ll be using it as our go-to, first-stop source for North American travel.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2021Another lovely, inspiring book from team FATHOM (whose site I've always loved). Get it and plan your next domestic trip!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2021Cannot wait to hit the road this fall with this book. I have so many places bookmarked!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2021This gorgeous new book reads like a 'user's guide' to the US, Mexico, Canada and a bit of the Caribbean, ideally timed for those of us wanting to avoid Americans behaving badly overseas and all the confusing, ever-changing Covid protocols.
As something of an overseas travel snob, I found myself surprisingly engrossed in this timely, picture-packed guide which covers some of my favorite insider addresses (Ryo Kan in Mexico City, Hotel Peter & Paul in New Orleans, the rightly legendary chopped salad at La Scala in Beverly Hills) , romantic getaways from Alaska to Eleuthera, as well as cities on the cultural rise like Indianapolis, Denver and Edmonton, plus many architectural and natural attractions I had never heard of before but now want to visit, like the Intagraton in the Mojave Desert and the Chapel of the Holy Cross atop the red rocks in the Sedona Desert.
I highly recommend this well-timed read both for serious globetrotters and travel neophytes, basically anyone curious about North America's natural and man made wonders on and off the beaten track, along with where to rest one's head between adventures and what's worth eating, drinking and shopping for along the way.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2021I received this book as a gift from my jet-setting sister, who's been encouraging me to see more of the good old U.S. of A. for decades. While I'm not a big-time traveler, I do love reading travel books and had previously been given a copy of Gerba & Rosati's "Travel Anywhere", so I was not surprised to see more witty text, fun anecdotes, and of course, gorgeous photos and illustrations of hundreds of venues I'll, in all honesty, probably never actually get out to see.
What a refreshing change to a regular travel guide book. Not only did they add hundreds of unique recommendations about where to go and what to do, but it reminds you about how to be a good citizen on the road, which is something I think we all could use right now. I even love how it's laid out like a magazine.
