- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2024I liked the character designs and the world building. I would like to see where it goes from here.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2024This is my first manga so I found it a little hard to follow, but I think that’s more of an issue of me not being accustomed to the particular style as the book’s drawing & printing seem to be of good quality (as opposed to some which seem more like photocopies .)
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2022Eli, a troubled youth, is whisked away from a bus ride to military school to find himself embroiled in interplanetary games featuring people bonded to giant monsters called Titans.
There's nothing exactly wrong with this but it is not my cup of tea. Saturday AM puts out a line of accessible, manga-inspired comics so it's easy to see this draws from the wells of My Hero Academia, Yugioh, Pokemon, and similar series. It's entertaining but it treads on well traveled ground. Things might take a turn later in the series but I don't think I'm up for it. Fans of the franchises I mentioned will probably enjoy this a lot more than I did.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2022Ah, this brought me back to when I discovered mangas back in the 1990s. I'd long been familiar with comic books (Disney's "Duck" comics via Carl Barks and/or Don Rosa were faves, and I read plenty of Marvel, DC, and EC Comics as well!), but manga felt so NEW back then! The black & white artwork and smaller page size was like "Ooooh! This is so different!" haha.
Anyway, Titan King has a very 1990's manga nostalgic feel to it. It's well-made and the artwork and storyline, without giving any spoilers, is fun :) If you have a 10 to 12-year-old in your life, this would be a great addition to their manga collection (or even a good jumping off point for getting into comics!).
It does leave room for a Volume 2 (Head's up!), but it looks like they're planning to release a second volume so I wouldn't worry too much.
My only real issue with Titan King is that the font on the cover makes it look like the title is THANKING. My family refers to Titan King as "the gratitude comic" because of the poor font choice lol. Other than that... no complaints!

The book is black and white, with a few color pages, such as chapter covers, printed on newsprint at a small size. The text is perfectly readable. It doesn't appear that the book was printed reduced, but rather designed from scratch at that size.
Some elements of the book at clearly done by hand, including some sound effects. Other elements, such as some word balloons and some backgrounds are right out of the Clip Studio templates.
There's a lot of white space, often around action, but also around words and sound effects.
Overall, the book flows pretty well. The art style doesn't waver. Characters are recognizable. Action is followable. Seemingly simply things such as those, can be harder to achieve than they often seem in comic books.
Check out Titan King by Tony Dawkins. If nothing else, it's probably something you haven't seen before.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2022If you know of shonen manga, then you probably have read or heard of the tournament arc. You probably have seen or heard of the hero of such manga depicted as a hot-headed battler who rushes in to defend their friends. Titan King is that manga.
Kidnapped by aliens, Honduras teenager Elias "Eli" Santos must fight as a representative for another planet with the aid of a giant creature called a Titan. Along the way to free himself from the tournament, Eli makes friends, rivals, and enemies. Can Eli succeed?
As a story focusing on a fighting tournament, the majority of the story's focus is on fighting. The action is easy to follow and clear. Really, the only time I had trouble following the action doesn't even involve fighting. Instead, it involves one character grouping another, resulting in him getting slapped for it.
The panel shows Calder, said character, on the ground, looking up at Eli and Banaya. A smaller, insert panel shows a hand approaching Banaya's breast. The next panel shows Banaya slapping Calder. I was so confused! I thought someone else had done the groping at first until the next panels reveal Calder as the perpetrator. From there, I thought he might be able to teleport or remove his hands or something, but no. That is not what happened. Apparently, Calder got up and then groped Banaya. It's not very clear that is what happened though.
While the flow of action is clear for the most part, the art can vary. Not in drastic ways, but in an off-model way. Eli's body, for example, tends to change shape. His torso can go from regular portions to being more blocky in shape. There are times when his skin is colored in with a criss-cross pattern, instead of a solid fill-in. It can be distracting at times. Also, not a major complaint, but I didn't realize that one of the alien races in the book, the Malidicae, is supposed to be insectoid until we met their king at the end of the volume. The art doesn't really convey this.
Out of the three Saturday AM manga I have read so far, this is my favorite. It really captured the spirit of a fighting manga that one would see from Japan.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2022I’m really enjoying this graphic novel/manga so far, I love reading action and horror manga, and this one is all action. I’m about 3/4 done, if you like my hero academia, I think this might be a good one to pick up. I don’t want to give anything away so I just took a few pictures of the first few pages. It has a few colored pages in the beginning and about 4 single colored pages throughout. It’s about 214 pages. I’m really enjoying the story, and I’m sure I’ll be looking forward to vol 2, the art style is amazing.
Unlike manga, this is a graphic novel, it includes very diverse characters, and I’m loving it, and this one reads from left to right (just so others are aware).
Since I’m almost done, i give this one a 8/10 and I recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read for fans of summon battles & Dragonball style art
I read some of this years ago when it was digital and it was great but never enough and to get it all in one place in volume 1 has been hard work well spent time by the author and artist.
Tony is a skilled artist and story teller. The book is refined so well you don’t really want to put it down and I enjoyed every page. Great escapism.
My only criticism is a personal one. I find inferred violence just as impactful as actually drawing it. There are just two particularly violent scenes in here where a head going pop and a person being shot in the head are shaded out but it has the impact perhaps that it is meant to. For me though I think that should have been cut to a simple black panel with the word bang or splat. That’s just me though with two young kids I’m sensitive to that sort of thing and I just felt it changed the tone a little. It is nothing really though as kids these days must be tougher than they used to be?
Anyway that aside the character designs are great, the line work is crisp, the use of lighting and hand drawn sound effects are all a very nice touch. The titan designs are well thought out and the as guys are awesome. It very much has the feel of playing a dragon quest game or reading something from the Dragonball universe without copying anything, just the art style I think is reminiscent of Toriyama.
I am now moving on to volume 2 with enthusiasm. I’d give this a 9/10 dropping one score for the above reason that as I said is purely a personal reason. I read manga for escapism and titan king delivers on all fronts. Well done Mr Dawkins!
