Their Shifter Academy: Unwanted Kindle Edition
I’ve already fought a battle or two. And my family’s complicated relationships with magic, which has been long forbidden to wolves, isn’t popular with all the packs.
I guess I should’ve said this is the place for born male shifters. There aren’t a lot of shifters like me, with flat irons and skinny jeans packed in their bags.
There’s quite the welcome committee waiting for me.
My cadre, who want to break me down and build me back up again.
My enemies, who just want to break me.
My patrol, who rises or falls with me.
They don’t expect me to make it to graduation in four years.
But I know I will.
Who’ll be standing with me at the end?
Their Shifter Academy is a complete reverse harem romance series, set in a military academy for shifters.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2024I was captivated by Maddie's story from the start! This book was written so well and pulled me in from the start! The characters are great and I'm very excited to see where this goes! I do think I should have read Pipers books first, but the story does still make sense and reads well independently.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2020I liked this book well enough. It's fairly predictable as far as academy bully romances go.
This book is about Maddie who has a troubled past. Trying to go to a shifter academy, the only girl, with other students who are out to get her from the start. Jensen is one of the students in particular who is going after her and trying to make her life hell. But we all know how that will end.😏
There is the typical hot for teacher moments. Maddie had a prior relationship with Lex who ended up being one of her instructors. And of course they can't keep their hands off each other.
There is also hints of Maddie being"special" but we don't quite find out why yet. I'm sure that's coming in the next book.
I enjoyed this. But it's predictable. It is written well and keeps you engaged. If you need a nice easy read to get you through a lazy day this is it. Good, well written story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2020Okay, people, let’s get real here and put things in perspective. Yes, this is an academy read about shifters and also includes witches, magic, and possibly other surprises and it is centered on a group of young adults, eighteen to early twenties. This academy is a school – for learning – but also for fighting and defense – where you learn to hone your skills to protect not only yourself, but your pack, your race, and especially those you love during the times of war. It is a school that is for male shifters – major testosterone central and lots of hostility, especially for Maddie, the young shifter princess, who is striking out on her own to learn to be her own person without the protection of her sister, Piper, the Queen of Shifters, and her sister’s mates and their pack.
Maddie has always been cared for and coddled so to an extent, she is a bit naïve in ways but she has powerful magic locked away which makes her special (and it’s a secret) and can kick ass with the best of them thanks to the training from her sister’s mates. She is still, however, a young girl starting fresh on her own in a hostile environment. The school, so far, is all males and she is definitely unwanted. Some see her as a problem to eliminate, some see her as a challenge to dominate, some see her ruining the reputation of the school and what they are trying to accomplish, others are openly curious, and then there are the few that see her as a beautiful young girl they need to protect. So, just like a regular school – made up of everything. And just like a regular school, there are the bad guys – the bullies – who think they are superior and just want to make life hell. In this case, there is a little more involved because there are separate agendas going on in the background that center around Maddie in one way or the other. I will insert here (as I am sure you have read from other reviews) there is some bullying in this book. I do not like reading bully books and usually stop reading when I come across it; however when you put everything about this book in context and really think about it – the characters, the world building, the dynamics of the school and the students, what they are, what they can do and how they were raised and Dawson provides a look into the complex thoughts of the main bully and well,…all that kept me reading. There are a lot of surprises and twists thrown in to keep it interesting.
Maddie is a powerhouse of emotions, she is brash and lashes out without thinking and it gets her in trouble (a lot) and she is also emotionally reeling from being dumped by her first love (who is also a house mate and instructor at the academy) which makes her a little more reckless and unsure of those around her and causes a lot of complications. Her house mates are an interesting mix and since this is the first book in the series and their characters are still being developed, I am extremely curious as to the outcome of her relationship with each of them. There are definitely some subtle sparks flying and lots of flirting and fun banter but what will come with each of them, only time will tell. I do hope that they all stick around and form their own motley pack with Maddie. Even the root of most of her problems, the baddie bully behind the scenes, seems to be drawn to her and her to him, so maybe even an enemy to more scenario here. Learning some things about him in this book, he has a twisted way of trying to do what he thinks is right for everyone and to protect Maddie so it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. A challenge is definitely thrown out at the end and it ends on a cliffhanger. I am looking forward to seeing how Maddie grows, how she handles things going forward, and how her relationships evolve with her house mates in the next book.
Overall, the main characters (Maddie and her guys) are great, the storyline puts a different spin on shifters, magic, witches, and academy life. There is plenty of emotions, danger, action, witty banter, flirty context, sexy times, bonds forming, suspense, and mystery in this engaging read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2024Now we follow Maddie story. We meet her going to the shifter Academy where she meets next Rafael Chase, Silas, pen Tuck, Faro and Jeremy. The new adventure of the other shift, the princess.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2019So, I stumbled back across this world (I read Piper’s series) and thought “oh! Little sister action. Piper showed the wolves who was boss, I can’t wait to see what spitfire Maddie does”. And I would like to say I’m pretty disappointed with this first book in general. Really, really mean guys who are tortured souls because they may possibly having feelings? Check. Emotional trauma? Check? Emotional abuse in the name of *protection*? Got that. Physical tormenting? It’s there but not really an issue since this is a training academy. Pushing people away by hurting them? In spades. Making our main character miss very, very important family events in the name *discipline, and power dynamics*? Gross and everywhere. My real question here, is how are we supposed to want the male love interests to get together with our girl? This genre is full of really troubling bullying and then forgiveness for some pretty unforgivable things. I don’t like our guys, they are cruel (wether intentionally or unintentionally because they are clueless and have no emotional intelligence), they exert a pretty strong controlling vibe that isn’t sexy, not endearing, and is just troubling. I find myself wondering how the author is going to get me on these boys side in future books? I’m not fooled by a short POV chapter of them *wrestling* with buried feelings or need to protect by being a really bad guy. Boring, seen that, pretty over it now. None of these guys are nice people, and they are delusional thinking they are helping our girl in anyway. And then Maddie is supposed to be better then them all but she seems to not raise to the challenge in a smart way. She is just gullible and led into trap after trap and disciplined left and right. And I’m not rooting for anyone at this point other than Silas. And I kinda hope Maddie will go to an alternate world and a different school because right now, this doesn’t look like it’s globing to be redeemable for me. I don’t need to be reminded women are unwanted, underestimated, controlled *for their own good*, and all around abused by the blunt men around them. I live that life already. I would like to see Maddie throw all these guys to the curb and get a whole new set in the witch world. Men who respect her, and aren’t raging donkeys for 2 books but some how still get the girl because they have abs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not unwanted!
Little sister to the pack queen enters the academy...no one want her there and make her life hell. With unexpected friends, lots of enemies and an ex boyfriend to cope with....A student being killed is the icing on the cake. Romance, friendship, bullies and murder...and that's just in the first semester!! You'll want to continue this adventure, hands down!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it
I loved reading this book. All the characters are way different but fit together. The fmc has the right amount of badass and sarcasm for my liking and the guys are way up there too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Four stars
Stars given on level of engagement;
5 stars - less than a day to read because I cannot put it down. I only give 5 stars if it has managed to engage extra emotions from me - extreme lol moments or real teary moments etc. A 5 stars book tends to have me raging about cliff hangers and (legally and not creepily) stalking the author for release dates.
4 stars - 2 days to read or less. A book that I have quite enjoyed reading, feisty MC and some racy scenes with thier romantic interest. I would definitely follow a series and author for 4 star books.
3 stars - takes around 2/3 days to read, usually because I have become distracted and less engaged in some sections but by the end the end I have enjoyed the overall story and would read any sequels.
1/2 stars not given, as I have usually returned it without finishing as I'm not engaged. .

3.0 out of 5 stars Shifter-Harem
Schade.

4.0 out of 5 stars May have been worthwhile to read Maddie’s sister series first
I enjoyed this book. It was fast moving, with lots going on, and a good length. It was well written, with a good story and characters. I liked the cover too. It took a couple of chapters to get into this book, maybe because I should have read Maddie’s sisters story first, which may have made it easier to understood the history of the world and how things work. I liked Maddie and her men, who were all unique with different personalities. However, maybe too many men as hard to find time to learn more about each of them. I keep on saying that three men is my limit, otherwise to many to get to know. Probably too much sex, which is hard not do in a Harem book, but still enjoyed the book. Looking forward to reading the next book which is in my KU to read later list.
