4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 491 ratings

The Chandler Brothers from New York Times Bestselling Author Carly Phillips are back!

He’s the town’s most popular playboy.
She’s sworn off men and weddings for good.

Police officer, Rick Chandler, has managed to fend off the marriage-minded women in his small town but it’s getting more difficult with each passing day. After all, there’s something about the Chandler charm that keeps them coming back with hope in their hearts. What’s a man determined to stay single to do?

Kendall Sutton is a cliche, a runaway bride stuck on the side of the road, until she’s rescued by the sexiest cop she’s ever seen. In spite of her pearly gown and tiara, Kendall vows to never get married—which makes her the ideal fake girlfriend to ward off Rick’s legion of admirers.

But when their charade starts to feel real, suddenly the town’s most popular playboy has marriage on his mind – but will a woman with Kendall’s jaded past ever say “I do”?

In honor of THE BACHELOR’s 20th Anniversary all three books have been updated and will be reissued with gorgeous NEW covers with the same content but modernized for your reading pleasure. The BACHELOR was the first book that Kelly Ripa chose for her Reading with Ripa Bookclub.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In the first book of Phillips's trilogy (The Bachelor) about the irresistible marriage-resistant Chandler brothers of rural Yorkshire Falls, N.Y., footloose foreign correspondent Roman got hooked, thanks to the ingenious plotting of his matchmaking mama. This follow-up focuses on the middle brother, Rick, a loving but broken-hearted divorcee determined to resist both mom's marriage plots and those of his admirers-roughly every single woman in town. To do so, Rick employs a counterplot involving equally commitment-shy Kendall Sutton, whom the playboy policeman rescues from a car mishap as she's fleeing her own wedding. But will the independent twosome, feigning coupledom to remove themselves from the matchmaking game, foil themselves by genuinely falling for each other? Of course. In fact, there's little in the way of surprise or suspense herein. The characters express astonishment at certain plot turns, but readers won't, as all devious deeds are broadcast miles in advance. Still, the brothers' considerable charisma makes up for many sins of style and substance. Those who like their romances fast 'n' frothy may well find this lightweight tale an appealing afternoon's diversion.

Review

Rick and Kendall were terrific, down to earth characters and...nothing beats the Chandlers' matriarch! I eagerly await Chase's story.

This is the story of Rick & Kendall. Rick is a police officer and a playboy in a small town. Kendall is a runaway bride who gets stuck on the side of the road and Rick rescues her. Kendall never stays in one place very long. Will she ever stop running? She inherited her aunt’s house and plans to put it up for sale. They make an arrangement while she’ll be in town. Rick and Kendall both have hang ups from the past, Kendall more than Rick. Can she ever overcome them? This story is full of doubt, hiding from emotions, keeping anything of importance to themselves, deception on Rick’s mother’s part, steamy scenes, and is there love? Lots of questions. You’ll have to read this great story to find out. It’s revamped and well written by Carly Phillips. It’s a can’t put down book. Looking forward to the last book in this series.

If you love to review great books (and I do), when you compare the author's works with another's, at least stay within the genre. I would group Carly Phillips say, with the Lori Foster contemporary romance novels, particularly the Buckhorn Brothers series. The Chandler brothers are believable characters. Roman, Rick and Chase become real to me because I have known men who remind me strongly of them. Ms. Phillips has well-fleshed out her men with human frailties and sexy, charming traits.
In The Playboy, Rick Chandler's mother is obsessed with marrying off her boys and becoming a grandmother. Later Raina admits she just wants to see her boys settled and happy as she was with their father. As a mother (or foster) of 7 boys, I can very much identify with Raina in this.
Rick and Kendall Sutton meet in an amusing scene; eye contact jolts, the sparks fly. I love the page where we find out about Kendall's woefully untalented attempt to turn her blond hair to a rich auburn the night before her wedding. It was very pink/punk when she and conservative cop Rick meet. This scene is deftly and hilariously presented, and the reader can say to herself "I've been there"! Soon Rick comes up with the idea of Kendall playing his girlfriend so his mother (and the women in town) will leave him alone.
Rick has good reasons for his fear of commitment. Kendall does not believe in the fairy tale of happy relationships with anyone. Her standard plan is to distance herself emotionally by packing up and leaving. Her character comes alive as we begin to understand her complex background; she belatedly realizes her younger sister has experienced a very similar childhood. This explains her teenage brattiness. Actually, I thought that Hannah had normal teenage brattiness with the habit of totally embarrasing her sister. Hannah is a wonderfully entertaining addition to the story at any rate.
I found the book to be not only a keeper, but a one-nighter as well. Ms. Phllips writing style focuses on her characters in the foreground, with their surroundings rather sparsely covered. In a Regency novel I would be disappointed; but in a contemporary book I like to fill in the setting with my own imagination. This is another trilogy where you want to tell the writer to hurry up already.

I loved rick and Kendall story. The fake relationship that ends up being real. The surprise child (even though it is a sister not baby). I loved Ed rereading this series and in particular this book. Getting to know the chandler brothers is so good. Carly Phillips never disappoints and getting to read the first series I read of hers is great.

I was worried that the second book in the Chandler series would not hold a candle to what the The Bachelor held. I was so happy that I was proven wrong. Carly Phillips writes another great book in the series. It is a fast moving book and there is no parts to the book that take away from the read. This is an easy read and all the characters are believable. I would recommend this book to anyone.

This Is an easy quick read. I just dislike the ending of this book. The author spends so much time building up the relationship, t by ending the book just ends. So frustrating

Good old fashioned love story mixed in with current real life problems. Two families as different as they can be. Just shows that the strong love of a good family can embrace and change those from a dysfunctional one.

Kendall and Rick come together without any to help will she stay that’s the problem. Kendall and Hannah have parents that care more about travel than the kids so they have to help each other.
I love Ricks mother always meddling she is brilliant character.
