The Lion's Paw (Lion of God: A Shadow Warriors Companion Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 180 ratings

“God. . .wherever He is, whoever He is, hasn’t cared about Syria in a very many years.”

The Sukhoi Su-57 “Felon.” The Russian Federation’s formidable new stealth fighter. Sleek, dangerous, and—forward-deployed into the maelstrom of the Syrian Civil War for field testing—vulnerable.

For the CIA, the Su-57’s presence in Syria presents an opportunity. For Mossad’s David Shafron, the former assassin once known as the “Lion of God,” it represents a threat. For the Syrian rebels soon tasked with its recovery. . .their own damnation.

It’s a high-stakes gambit worthy of the Cold War, but this war is red-hot.

For Mohamed Taferi, dispatched by Shafron to lead the operation on the ground, the Syrian conflict is nothing new. An Israeli Druze and Mossad field officer, he’s found himself in the war-ravaged country countless times over the years. But this mission will plunge him deeper into the darkness—the madness—of the inferno than ever before, hunted by Russian Spetsnaz and a sadistic Syrian Special Forces captain, forced to rely on a ragtag, bloodied band of the unlikeliest allies, rebels and jihadists alike, in a nightmarish journey of the damned across the very heart of desolation.

And no one is emerging from these fires unscathed.

Stephen England is the author of the bestselling Shadow Warriors thrillers, including Amazon's #1 Bestselling Political Thriller, Pandora's Grave, a series hailed as "the perfect spy thrillers for our time--chaotic, cynical, with only a few good men keeping the barbarians from the gate."

Drawing upon over a decade and half of research into the nature of Islam, the Middle East, espionage and counterterrorism operations, England's work has drawn praise for breathing new life into the genre with the hard-edged, unsparing realism of his portrayal of the war on terror, the people who wage it, and the moral and psychological costs exacted of those who take the war to the enemy where he lives. "Soldiers without uniforms. Fighting a war without end. Shadow warriors. . ."

I have said it before and will say it again: if you've read Stephen England before, you know what to expect with every new release. Characters that seem to take on flesh and blood before your eyes, each of them a complex and vulnerable person with real dreams and nightmares; heart-pounding scenes of tension and action that are so intensely set and narrated, you almost feel the sand and dirt fill your shoes as you read; perceptive insights into human nature, heroism, tragedy, and evil that can make you question the accuracy of how you judge yourself. Each book gets better and better, and with The Lion's Paw, Mr. England has reached a new height of his powers.
Syria is a brutal and unforgiving place, with violence and fatal uncertainty at every turn. The Lion's Paw is unsparing in its detail of this harsh reality, which by nature can be exhausting to read, but one thing that sets this book apart from past works is the levity throughout. Veteran readers know that Mr. England carefully places moments of peace and lightness in his stories, but there was a new sharpness to his wit this time around. Take a few examples:
"That was the Russians for you, as they all knew well—the kid with his hand in the cookie jar, chocolate smeared around his mouth, denying that he had ever so much as heard of cookies."
"...the shorter officer sat across from him, hands busy shaping a clay-like substance that resembled nothing so much as children’s Play-Doh into a pair of compact charges. Very, very angry Play-Doh."
"It wasn’t the first time the Good Idea Fairy had descended upon Headquarters only to depart leaving everyone concerned stumbling around the next morning, holding their heads and looking for their clothes, anxious to pretend that the previous night had never happened. But much like virginity, field ops weren’t something you simply put back into the bottle." (Literal laugh-out-loud on that one!)

All in all, this is a fantastic read--it will be very hard to put it down once you start. The Lion of God is back... and he's brought friends.

Wars and victims of wars , those that are participating in the conflict and those that are ground to dust by the hardships brought about by war. This gave us a peak under the curtain at the horrors and atrocities that men inflict on people innocent or guilty with no much care. It's a good book and a recommended read, gripping and informative.

Stephen England has written another book in this series (a prequel series to his Shadow Warriors series) and again has written what should be a bestseller. I began reading Robert Ludlum and Tom Clancy a very long time ago and I find Stephen to be a better storyteller than either of these classic spy thriller authors. He adds just enough technology, and weaponry to his stories without being overly advanced or boring with long descriptions. I believe everyone should read everything Stephen has written.

The Lion’s Paw continues the series, set in the turbulent Middle East and the Americans have asked for the Israeli’s help with a new Russian aircraft that showed up in Syria. This time the hero of the story is Mohamed Taferi, an Israeli Druze that will embed with one of the many “freedom fighter” groups in Syria. Mohamed is the kind of person you would want to be your brother, neighbor and friend as long as you are not an enemy. You learn about the Middle East conflict like you never would from the news. It is hard to put down this book as it is full of action and anticipation, and it may (will) keep you up late. You will become emotionally involved with the very believable characters, either love them, hate them, or hope for a better outcome. This is an excellent read as a stand alone book or as part of the series.

The book was amazing!!  I usually read very quickly but I  really took my time and read over several days. It was incredibly suspenseful and at points nerve-racking, anticipating terrible outcomes at every turn! I became invested  in several of the characters ( Mohamed Taferi, Nassif, even Al-Golani and Andriy Makarenko and a few others) and was almost afraid to find out what the final outcome was for them. That is the hallmark of a truly gifted writer. To ensnare you into being emotionally involved in the story!

Complex as the subject matter it covers. Stories within stories, conflicting loyalties within each character, moral borders crossed and crossed back again continually. An ending that is undeniable in this perpetual conflict. Excellent

5.0 out of 5 stars A haunting, heart-wrenching and action-packed spy tale immersing readers into war-torn Syria
Reviewed in Germany on October 15, 2021
No one can hold a candle against Stephen England’s ability to combine a gritty, authentic depiction of intelligence work and its psychological cost with bold, epic storytelling on a grand scale.

When David Shafron, the former „Lion of God“ is presented with an opportunity to secure highly sensitive Russan military technology for Israel, he knows the potential fallout could be devastating, especially since the plan involves a false-flag attack on a Russian airbase in war-torn Syria...

With every new story, Stephen England’s own voice as a writer becomes more distinctive and compelling. He started out great and only got better over the years, still playing to his key strengths, namely a realistic portrayal of the spy trade and the creation of complex, exciting plots with memorable characters to inhabit them. But England’s writing style has matured over the years, with the prose being more on-point and the transition from different scenes and settings becoming more natural and seamless while still keeping the reader on edge.

Another thing that England has mastered over the years is the skill to utilize the settings of his stories to their full potential, capitalizing on regional quirks and oddities to enrich his plots.
Thanks to the author’s research Syria comes to life on the page, making the horrors of living into an active war zone palpable. The angst, desperation and war-weariness of the people is shown through their actions rather than prolonged descriptions.

Despite the author‘s growing focus on emotional stakes, THE
LION‘S PAW delivers some of his most-intense action sequences yet. The pace is frenetic, the plot unpredictably twisted and the characters and their struggles deeply moving.

Stephen England has outdone himself, coming up yet again with something completely different, while delivering in spades on the unmatched strengths readers have come to expect from him.
So believe me when I say: you don’t want to miss this particular spy-thriller-gem.
