The author takes the Viennese family of Viktor Baur through the turbulent years of World War I, the difficulties of feeding the family when money was
worthless after the war, then followed closely by the Depression with so many people out of work. With all of this going on in Austria, Austrians could look over the border at their German neighbors and see their country improving under Hitler and the Nazis. Viktor is a successful banker and could see how the German economy was improving and that many Austrians were demanding Anschluss with Germany. However, Viktor was a strong Austrian, who had fought in the Great War and was concerned about the dictatorship with Hitler. The story then focuses on Viktor's two children. Fritz and the younger daughter, Elke who are both caught up in the Hitler "magic." Too often we read about the great events in history and concentrate on the people in power, forgetting that decisions made at high levels in government effect all individuals such as the Baur family.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2022It would take a brave writer to try summing up a vast sociological movement with religious, ethnic, and historical roots into a medium sized novel. Larry Hilton proves himself up to this daunting task, however, and his ear for dialogue makes for pleasurable, if challenging, reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2021After diving into a few WWII historical fiction novels lately, Streets of Tears by Larry Hilton seemed like a good choice with an interesting twist. The novel has intriguing content. I love the perspective told from a Nazi SS woman as opposed to most historical fiction on WWII being told from the perspective of those who were persecuted during that time period. I really enjoy books that jump back and forth in a timeline and the psychological aspect of this book was also fascinating, however, the writing felt flat and strained. For me, it read more like non-fiction than fiction- like a series of statements instead of an easy flowing storyline. Mr. Hilton’s passion for history, specifically during the World Wars is apparent and non-fiction readers with a curiosity about Vienna during WWI & WWII may find this book an easy read, but I just could not get invested.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2022The story is so similar to things a family friend has told us of her experiences in Germany during this time. I found the story captivating and I couldn't put it down until the end.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2022An author’s background frequently interests me. Larry Hilton, for example, has a degree in history which certainly fits with the writing of his book, Streets of Tears. The rest of his background includes having been a banker, stock broker, and portfolio manager. No doubt, those working with people in those fields informed Hilton’s writing as well.
Streets of Tears, set during WWI and leading into WWII, introduces readers to Viktor Baur and his family in Vienna. Viktor Baur is a banker, a job with which Hilton is certainly familiar. WWII novels are abundant. Most of them show readers the Allied side. The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak gives readers an inside look. The same is true of Streets of Tears.
The story’s emphasis is on Victor’s children, Fritz and Elke. Stories that focus on regular people rather than famous ones are more often my choice. Streets of Tears gives readers that look into the lives of ordinary people caught up in war.
The chapters unfold through various characters. This method of providing a story allows readers a complete look at characters. Historical fiction is popular and WWII stories are among the most popular. Book club members will find much to discuss in Streets of Tears: The war itself, whether to support Hitler, and finding ways to survive during a brutal war will all provide fodder for discussion.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2021The author's dense knowledge of history adds depth and panache to the story of the Baur family, as they are variously caught up in the events of Hitler's annexation of Austria in 1938. Larry Hilton's love of Vienna and his ability to describe its environs in detail will allow you to become an integral part of the Baur family as they resist, doubt, accept, and finally support the annexation. The younger generation get on Hitler's bandwagon without equivocation, while their parents struggle to withdraw from the fray. If you're looking for high drama set in accurate historical context, this is your book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2021My favorite books transport me to a period in history and help me understand the joys, concerns, and daily lives of the people who live there. Streets of Tears did just that!
I appreciated the brief historical synopsis at the start of each chapter to set the foundation for what would transpire in the lives of the people to follow, and I couldn't help but reflect on the relevance of what I was reading to today. Political truth does not come served up, one must question everything and hunt for it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2020Streets of Tears is a moving novel about a troubling time in history when people turned against others in a brutal fashion. Hilton delves into the minds and emotions of the perpetrators of the holocaust in ways that have rarely been explored.
