For a remote village is about to become the centre of a battle for the future of Europe. Sitting high above the Almaraz bridge, it is the last link between two French armies, one in the north and one in the south; if they meet, the British are doomed.
Only Sharpe's small group of men – with their cunning and courage to rely on – stand in their way. But they're rapidly outnumbered, enemies are hiding in plain sight, and time is running out . . .

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 January 2025As always Sharpe is a good read. With our hero winning again.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 October 2023May 1812 and the Peninsula War on the border between Portugal and Spain. A bridge at Almaraz is a key link between two French armies and destroying it will be a key factor to enable British success. Sharpe and his band of loyal and cunning riflemen are sent on reconnaissance but of course end up playing a key role in the conflict to come.
Odd this. The author surprisingly gets a bit wrong on his own Sharpe chronology, including his rank and various characters, how much this will irk you will depend on how immersed you are in the journey of Sharpe and his timelines.
But is it a short, fun and easy read. Not much character conflict and a very comfortable relationship between Sharpe and his men. No great bad guys or major twists but it is always nice to have more Sharpe, even if the author is slightly off his game with this one.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 June 2024Yet another classic take, written by a master story teller, read the book in one sitting, great story based on real events with a "little bit" of artistic license with the fictional characters.....Loved every word of this story
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 January 2025Good adventure from Bernard Cornwell. Another Sharpe story almost like a period mystery that moves smartly along keeping the interest throughout.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 January 2025This author is great at historical fiction great read
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 December 2024I’m not sure what happened here. This is Sharpe, and the regular characters are all there. The only problem is that Cornwell’s normal attention to detail isn’t. Sharpe is mysteriously a Major, while he’s a Captain again in the next book in the series. He meets a character in this book which he’s also described as meeting for the first time in the next one in the series.
It’s like Cornwell was so intent on getting the story out that he didn’t correct errors as he was going, and the publishers forgot to give it to a proofreader.
Having said all that, it’s a Sharpe novel, and if you’re a Sharpe nut like me then it’s a must have for the collection.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 December 2024Another excellent book
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 September 2024Firstly, I just want to say that Cornwell is an outstanding writer of historical fiction. The problem is he finished this excellent series years ago. Instead of starting a new series, he seems to be just wedging adventures in retrospectively. Sharpe’s Assassin wasn’t great, but it was enjoyable enough. This one lacks any kind of originality, is poorly written, and has glaring continuity errors. Sharpe receives a promotion that he shouldn’t have until Sharpe’s Enemy and his old comrade Tom Gerrard turns up (with a misspelled surname) alive and well after he has been blown to pieces in a prior book. Someone should have picked this up. The dialogue is poor and repetitive- I could go on for ages. If I didn’t love this series so much I’d give it one star. It gets three because of the affection I have for the other books. Only read if you have to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book - historical fiction is ‘spot on’
After getting my first book in the ‘Sharpe’ series by Bernard Cornwell, (which was “Havoc”), I was hooked. Note: better to start at the beginning of the series ..
It’s easy read, witty, with great character development. The references to the Napoleonic era are ‘on point’. You can relate to the characters, empathize with the main character. For the couch, patio, travelling, or on the beach, the ‘Sharpe’ series is a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharpes Command.
Sharpes Command is what I expect from a Sharpe book. Sharpes Assassin wasnt what I expected. This book is Sharpe at his best, It would have been nice if he was made Colonel after his exploits at Fort Napoleon and Fort Ragusa. I look forward to Sharpes next adventures.
