5,0 su 5 stelle A story of great beauty
This is a story of great beauty, told simply and without pretense from the point of view of the child. Children speak from the heart, with excitement at the little wonders of their lives, with bewilderment at the confusions, and always with honesty, and the author captures this sense with grace. The story moves us, challenges us, breaks our hearts, and lifts us to hope. I finished the story with tears, cathartic tears for the hero I wished I could have met. This is a fine tribute to courage, hope, faith, and love. Such works can be necessary to healing, and when shared in this way, can be strength for us all. Thank you.

5,0 su 5 stelle Extremely well written and surprisingly uplifting! Good read!
A sweet story written by a mom who has come to terms with the untimely death of her child. Notice I said, “come to terms with” because you never get over the loss of your child. However, Ms. Schmidt ’s skills have allowed her to tell a story through the eyes of her son, in his own words. Young and old will identify and empathize with his pain, confusion, and ultimately, acceptance.
Under Ms. Schmidt’s deft hand, we see the children as toddlers, playing and discovering life. A brilliant choice to show us so much of Sam’s childhood before the cancer diagnosis. Afterwards, we can appreciate what it takes for this family to embrace a new normal while trying to keep life as natural as possible for the two little boys.
Though told from the child’s point of view, this book works well for mature audiences. The subject matter is heavy, but the story is told in a way that’s not oppressive. “Sammy, A Hero at Age Five” is well written and a very good read. Kudos to Ms. Schmidt and her son, co-author, Gene D. Donley.

5,0 su 5 stelle A Heart-rending Read But Equally Inspirational & Heart-Warming
'Sammy: Hero at Age Five' by M. Schmidt & Gene D. Donley is at times a heart-rending read, but equally it is also an inspirational & heart-warming tale.
The story opens with, Sammy, who is the author's son, introducing the reader to his close-knit family & the fun times they shared prior to, and following, his cancer diagnosis.
Throughout, Sammy's love for God never wavered, & he never doubted God's love for him. He found peace in the knowledge that God had taken good care of his older brother, Shane, who had passed on before him, and he dearly believed it was God who had given him the strength to fight his biggest battle, caused by a medical blunder.
I believe God also Blessed Sammy's family by sending them Ardy, Michael & his daughter, Rachel, to love them & help them through their most difficult & darkest times.
This story will appeal to readers who love Christian stories, true stories, short stories or anyone who has a heart.

5,0 su 5 stelle A Heart-Wrenching, Yet Inspiring Memoir
This is a memoir of Sammy, a child who is fighting cancer, and serves as a loving tribute to his short but significant life. When I told my husband what I was reading, he said, "I would not want to read anything like that; it would be too sad." While undeniably sad, this book is also a celebration of a young child's bravery, strength, and spirit, and I am glad I read it. I felt as though I had gotten to know Sammy and that alone made the read worthwhile. While facing challenges no child should have to contemplate, Sammy found moments of joy and drew support and comfort from his mom, brother, and friends. In doing so, Sammy enriched the lives of those around him.

5,0 su 5 stelle Take Nothing for Granted
This book will break your heart. It's written in the little boy's point of view. He takes you from birth to his last days suffering with cancer. You can feel the pain his family endures, even though they try to put on a brave face in front of him.
A good read if you or someone you know is going through this; or even if you need a reminder to appreciate what you have in your life.
