About the authors
Mark Roman has been working his way through the alphabet in search of a suitable career. He’s sampled architecture, accountancy, auditing and astrophysics. For a while he worked as a computer programmer before realizing he’d skipped over ‘B’. So he took up bioinformatics, which is where he is now. He worries that becoming an author would put him back to ‘A’, with the whole alphabet still stretching out ahead of him.
He lives in London with his wife (also a scientist) and two young children, neither of whom wants to become a scientist. In his work he has published around 80 papers, reviews and book chapters - although, if you want to read them, you’ll need to look under a different name.
As a lifelong soccer fan he is no stranger to the extreme emotions of elation and despair (but mainly despair - in fact, almost entirely despair), particularly from his own performances on the football field. Still, he firmly believes there’s no problem that can’t be solved by a nice cup of tea. Except, perhaps, global warming.
Born in a Yorkshire cave after his mother became stuck during a pot-holing holiday, Corben Duke was left behind and raised by bats. Later he became a shack-dweller on Doom Beach, Bernard Island, Outer Hebrides where he now lives with his wife Mrs Duke and two dogs, Crusher and Mr Fluffy.
Three years ago Corben teamed up with Mark Roman (via the HarperCollins Authonomy website) and they wrote 'The Worst Man on Mars'.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2019Funny, thoughtful, well-written, provocative, this collection of bite-sized short stories make for perfect potty reading. The authors have a wonderful sense of the absurd, great comedic timing, and a cheeky playfulness. These stories have an almost nostalgic air to them, and fit squarely in the tradition of absurdist science fiction—thought provoking but amusing. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2019This is one of the better collections of short stories I’ve read. The work ranges from flash fiction 100-word shorts to longer stories about alien invasions settled with a game of golf, and a widow’s fortune looking for an honest broker (call now! ;-) ).
A small part of this collection plays the greatest hits from other works, but even if you’re familiar with Mark Roman and Corben Duke’s writing, they’ll still worth rereading. If you’re looking to take a break from the latest lengthy series you’re currently reading, then buy a copy of this book.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2020Nothing overly heavy but always thought provoking; each of these tales are perfect on their own and contained in a collection of short stories they are magical (wow, that is a long sentence).
This was the perfect break from the heavier topics I've been reading. I was able to read a few stories at a time in between pandemic adulting.
I absolutely recommend this short story collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining
A good choice to fill in that ten or fifteen minute gap when you have nothing better to do or planned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and thought provoking
A collection of original and excellent stories, long and short. My favourite is I-Laptop, a machine experiencing a new awareness. Think Talkie-Toaster from Red Dwarf, and then some. The other tales all have neat twists too, especially one with the return of the dinosaurs... But I'll leave you to find out...
Oh, and the neat little pictures to illustrate each chapter are great - shades of the great Robert Rankin here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chortle!
I would recommend this for fans of Red Dwarf and Spaceballs.
It's not mind blowing hard sci-fi but if you want something to dive into for twenty minutes to give you a giggle, this book serves its purpose. The writers have done a good job of painting rich humorous scenarios and playing them out to wacky denouements.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not laugh out loud
I don't think i have the same sense of humour as some of the other reviewers. I just didn't find these stories all that funny, a few wry smiles but just no, sorry guys but the preview of the book about the martian trip left me absolutely cold.
