American Treasures: The Secret Efforts to Save the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address Hardcover – August 30, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
Stephen Puleo's American Treasures is a narrative history of America's secret efforts to hide its founding documents from Axis powers, and its national tradition of uniting to defend the definition of democracy.
A Boston Globe Bestseller
On December 26, 1941, Secret Service Agent Harry E. Neal stood on a platform at Washington's Union Station, watching a train chug off into the dark and feeling at once relieved and inexorably anxious. These were dire times: as Hitler's armies plowed across Europe, seizing or destroying the Continent's historic artifacts at will, Japan bristled to the East. The Axis was rapidly closing in.
So FDR set about hiding the country's valuables. On the train speeding away from Neal sat four plain-wrapped cases containing the documentary history of American democracy: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Gettysburg Address, and more, guarded by a battery of agents and bound for safekeeping in the nation's most impenetrable hiding place.
American Treasures charts the little-known journeys of these American crown jewels. From the risky and audacious adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 to our modern Fourth of July celebrations, American Treasures shows how the ideas captured in these documents underscore the nation's strengths and hopes, and embody its fundamental values of liberty and equality. Stephen Puleo weaves in exciting stories of freedom under fire - from the Declaration and Constitution smuggled out of Washington days before the British burned the capital in 1814, to their covert relocation during WWII - crafting a sweeping history of a nation united to preserve its definition of democracy.

"captivating...American Treasures brings to life the creation and safeguarding of the United States’ establishing documents, along with other irreplaceable items that have gone undercover in times of crisis....For the historically minded reader, American Treasures holds a wealth of knowledge about the founding documents and a celebration of American life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As Puleo himself puts it, the history of these documents is the history of America." - Parade

- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2017this is the third book I have read by Stephen Puleo and I must say, he does not disappoint. I am not a fan of historic works but it has never been presented to me the Author Puleo writes. Fascinating insight in the mindsets of our beloved historic forefathers and the amazing documents they created and debated over.
A must read just like his other books. Stephen gives it his all with an amazing amount of research and historical context.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2017Very informative. I thought I knew a lot of US history, but this book informed me of historical and 'turf protection' stories I have never heard before. Extremely good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2016A very inspiring book. Well written and a great read. I learned so much more about our history and gained an even greater appreciation of all the individuals that risked so much and took on such responsibilities to preserve our "Charters of Freedom." I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2023I was expecting to spend the majority of the book learning about "the secret efforts" to save our historic documents, as indicated by the title. In my opinion, less than 10% of the book talks about actual plans and movements of these documents. The bulk of the book detailed how the documents came to be. As a history lover, I appreciated the reminder of our forefathers' commitment and it made protecting the Freedom Charters more touching with that understanding. I just wish the title might be a little more indicative of the actual content. I felt a little mislead. Still good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2019I have visited the National Archives and seen our nation's important documents, and I look forward to returning soon after reading this book. The author tells the story about how these treasures have been saved and protected. This story in and of itself is interesting. But Mr. Puleo also tells the stories behind the creation of these documents. He does so in a clear, concise way and I learned things from his writing. I urge people to read this book and then come to see these "American Treasures" in person.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2023The seller did a great job. Delivered in a timely manner. Book condition just as described by him. Happy with purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2016The story of moving and protecting the founding documents would have been a good story all by itself. I truly appreciated the story of the struggle behind the creation of each of the documents and to a lesser degree the political struggle about who was going to hold these priceless treasures. I have recommended this book to friends personally and will continue to do so, I enjoyed this book very much.
