Tribute CDs are a very difficult balancing act to pull off well. If they're too different from the original, people get cranky; if they're too similar, people say, "Why not just listen to the original artist?" "Looking Into You" is a strong tribute set and highlights how brilliant of a songwriter Jackson Browne is. There are no tracks on the set that are clinkers. That said, I do have some particular gems to which I gravitate. On the first disc, Don Henley & Blind Pilot lead off with a stunning rendition of the brilliant song "These Days." It is different enough from Browne's own gorgeous version that Henley and Blind Pilot's Israel Nebeker's vocals totally fill the emotional space of longing and regret, "These days I seem to think a lot about the things I forgot to do for you & all the times I had the chance to." It's a GREAT opening track. Indigo Girls do a blockbuster reading on Browne's gorgeous "Fountain of Sorrow." I totally connect with Amy Ray's vocals and the gorgeous harmonies with Emily Sailers, "What I was seeing wasn't what was happening at all." While I do have a CD by the band Venice, I don't wait with breathless anticipation over their each and every release, but their touring work with Jackson Browne gives them a real feel for what has always one of my favorite songs by Browne. "For A Dancer" reflects brilliant depth of feeling in dealing with the issue of loss, "I don't know what happens when people die; Can't seem to grasp it as hard as I try; It's like a song I can hear playing right in my ear that I can't sing, but I can't help listening." On the second disc, Keb' Mo's infectious reading of "Rock Me On the Water" has a different feeling from Browne's, but totally sets the toe to tapping as I become once again transfixed by the gorgeous melody. Lucinda Williams' is a perfect fit for the lovely song "The Pretender," "I want to know what became of the changes we waited for love to bring." Her world-weary voice embraces the song as the nearly 7-minute track builds to its powerful conclusion. Other tracks on the set are also strong with Bonnie Raitt's vocals on "Everywhere I Go," Ben Harper's lovely take on "Jamaica Say You Will" and Sara Watkins' vocals on "Your Bright Baby Blues" being particularly riveting to my ear. "Looking Into You" is a strong tribute set that celebrates the great gift of Jackson Browne's incredibly robust and potent songs. Enjoy!

As on the Warren Zevon tribute release, "Enjoy Every Sandwich", Don Henley opens up this tribute to Jackson Clyde Browne... Unlike Zevon's tribute recording, Browne is still very much alive and touring! The song, "These Days" is covered quite well as it has been by many other artists including Duane Allman. I'll admit to never hearing about the band backing Henley, Blind Pilot, nor have I heard of several of the singers on this project. They all have done a terrific job of doing justice to these Browne classics, especially Jimmy LaFave on a very powerful rendition of "For Everyman", the album that brought us "Take It Easy" which, thankfully, is NOT on this recording. We've all heard enough of that one, I think! They should have included "Sky Blue and Black" though, as I believe it to be the greatest song Browne has done since the seventies. I'm not a Lyle Lovett fan, but I very much like his takes on "Our Lady of the Well" and "Rosie". He and many of the other artists manage to sound a bit like Mr. Pretender himself, though as one who has performed many Browne songs over the years, I have to say it is hard NOT to sound like him when singing his songs! Springsteen sounds refreshingly different on the Spanish-tinged ballad "Linda Paloma" and the backing arrangement of instruments is surprisingly faithful to the original. Bruce Hornsby adds bluegrass bounce to "I'm Alive" though with no keyboards to be heard. The women bring the most originality to their interpretations, not having opportunity to sound like the man himself. Karla Bonoff brings a majestic maturity to "Something Fine", Lucinda Williams bravely tackles "The Pretender" in an understated vocal performance, and the relatively unknown singer-songwriter Eliza Gilkyson, who I've heard perform in a Kansas barn a couple years ago, brings the perfect and delicate touch to "Before The Deluge", a song which Browne has dedicated to every environmental benefit that hires him. Then there is Bonnie Raitt teaming up with Browne's classic string sideman David Lindley providing much passion in the reggae-influenced "Everywhere I Go". The last song on the last disc is, fittingly, sung by JD Souther: "My Opening Farewell". Souther was a co-writer with Browne and the Eagles as well as with the retired Linda Ronstadt who would have been here I'm sure had not Parkinson's Disease taken her voice from us. Her cover of "Rock Me On The Water" from the seventies will have to suffice.

In short, Browne fans must own this and young fans of the genre should as well as there are some fine young voices to be heard who breathe new life into these expertly-crafted songs. Justice has been served!

5.0 out of 5 stars I bought his breakthrough album "Running On Empty" and never liked it. Over the years

I have grown up with Jackson Browne and his music.

I bought his breakthrough album "Running On Empty" and never liked it.

Over the years, I may have bought two or three more of his albums based on positive reviews, and I never really liked them.

A couple of years ago, I bought "The Very Best Of" Jackson Browne, and it was then that I threw in the towel and decided that I did not care for his music and that I never would.

And then I broke down and bought this album, A Tribute To Jackson Browne.

And you guessed it. I freaking love this album.

I have now come to the realization JB is a great songwriter, he just shouldn't sing them.

Kritiker könnten anmerken: Alter Wein in neuen Schläuchen. Aber: Wein sehr gut - Schläuche sehr gut - alles sehr gut! Genießen!
