Editorial Reviews

John Bonham, John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant came together in 1968 as Led Zeppelin. Over the next decade, the band would become one of the most influential, innovative and successful groups in modern music, selling more than 300 million albums worldwide. Their songs are some of the most celebrated in rock n roll history that, to this day, resonate with fans young and old around the globe. Still, no matter how many times you may have listened to their music, you ve never heard Led Zeppelin like this before.

With the 2014 release of deluxe editions of
Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II, & Led Zeppelin III, the band will launch an extensive reissue program of all nine of its studio albums in chronological order, each remastered by guitarist and producer Jimmy Page. Led Zeppelin will also open its vaults to share dozens of unheard studio and live recordings, with each album featuring a second disc of companion audio comprised entirely of unreleased music related to that album.

"The material on the companion discs presents a portal to the time of the recording of Led Zeppelin, " says Page. "It is a selection of work in progress with rough mixes, backing tracks, alternate versions, and new material recorded at the time."

The Led Zeppelin legend began in January of 1969 with the group s eponymous debut. From the opening salvo of "Good Times Bad Times, " on through to "Babe I m Gonna Leave You, " "Communication Breakdown, " and "Dazed And Confused, " the album introduced the band s unmistakable sound and left an indelible mark on the music landscape.
Led Zeppelin has been certified diamond by the RIAA for sales over 10 million and was inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame in 2004.

The companion audio for
Led Zeppelin features a previously unreleased performance recorded on October 10, 1969 at the Olympia Theatre in Paris. The nine-song set features seven tracks from the album, including an epic 15-minute version of "Dazed And Confused, " as well as "Heartbreaker" and "Moby Dick, " which would debut on Led Zeppelin II later that month.

Led Zeppelin continues to be honored for its pivotal role in music history. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, and a year later was awarded with the Polar Music Prize in Stockholm. Founding members Jones, Page and Plant along with Jason Bonham, the son of John Bonham took the stage at London s O2 Arena in 2007 to headline a tribute concert for Ahmet Ertegun, a dear friend and Atlantic Records founder. The band was honored for its lifetime contribution to American culture at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012. In January of 2014, the band won their first ever Grammy award as
Celebration Day, which captured their live performance at the Ertegun tribute concert, was named Best Rock Album.

Led Zeppelin released its superb debut album in January of 1969.
In 1968, famed British session guitarist Jimmy Page (whom had joined The Yardbirds and was in their final lineup) first joined forces with fellow British session musician John Paul Jones (bass guitar and keyboards) and two musicians from the Midlands of England being singer Robert Plant and the sadly missed John Bonham on drums. They originally went as The New Yardbirds but Jimmy Page remembered a name that the late Keith Moon of The Who coined being Led Zeppelin. The name stuck and the rest was history. Bands like Black Sabbath (whom would go in a heavy direction thanks to the members of Sabbath enjoying the first two seminal Zeppelin albums), Iron Maiden, and every other metal/hard rock band would owe its sound to Zeppelin and Zeppelin would become the second highest selling band in US history with over 110 or so million albums SOLD (more than The Eagles, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Queen and The Who)!
In late 1968, the new band recorded, mixed and mastered its debut album in a total of 30 studio hours with Jimmy Page producing the album and Glyn Johns engineering (who also engineered/produced albums for The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Faces, The Eagles) and unleashed a superb debut, as I found out at Christmas 1986 when I first got on cassette tape (with Sides 1 and 2 swapping each other) and subsequently on CD (the 1994 remaster is still the best).
We open proceedings (which was Side 2 of the original US cassette issue) with the great rocker "Good Times Bad Times" which features stellar guitar solos from Page, thundering drums from Bonham, rumbling bass by Jones and Plant's superb rock voice. Next is Page's re-working of an old Joan Baez tune called "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" which features excellent acoustic and electric work and Plant exploring his vocal range in the course of this epic going from quiet to screaming and versatility all around (Chicago would lift the electric guitar riff for their song "25 Or 6 to 4"). Next is the blues of "You Shook Me" is a very bluesy song with nice slide guitar from Page (who throws in a blazing solo). Plant changes things up by throwing a harmonica into the song at intro, middle and end. Jonesy playing some organ and Bonzo pounding the drums like a man possessed. Then before the song ends, the classic "call and response" of Plant's screams and Page's guitar hits it out of the ball park. The first half closes with "Dazed and Confused" which Page did with The Yardbirds, but of course Page wanted to put a Zeppelin-esque spin on it. Opening with Jonesy's bass riff and everything else comes into place. Then Pagey plays the violin bow on his guitar with some eerie sounds but just burns. Then the fast instrumental break has the band "cut loose" and demonstrate their abilities, which they do remarkably well.
The second half of the album (or side 1 of the US cassette editions) started with the organ of Jonesy's which begins "Your Time Is Gonna Come" and is a pretty good tune about a cheating lover. Page plays some great acoustic guitar here and Robert singing excellent. We then segue into the acoustic "Black Mountain Side" written and played by Page and some congas by either Bonzo or session musician. Then another soaring hard rocker comes inout of "Communication Breakdown" which has Robert screaming his vocals and Page, Jones and Bonham playing like they were possessed by demons (especially Page's epic solos on this track). "I Can't Quit You Babe" is next and done in a quieter relaxed way as opposed to the version from Royal Albert Hall that would emerge on Coda in 1982. We close the album (or Side 1 of the original US cassette version) with the epic "How Many More Times" which is the longest song on the album. Like "Dazed and Confused", it begins with Jonesy's bass riff coupled with manic guitar from Page, fast drumming from Bonzo and Plant's vocals wailing away. Then Page utilizes the violin bow midway through the song. Then it goes into an improv where Robert sings a cover of "The Hunter" before it stops and Plant's scream would go back to main riff and close in an epic way.
Led Zeppelin's debut would go to #10 on the American album charts without the benefit of a pop radio hit and sell nearly 10 million copies in the US alone and would pave the way for Zeppelin's legendary career.
Now in 2014, the album is re-released and given a superb remastering treatment by Jimmy Page and also comes with a second CD featuring the band's classic concert performance at the Olympia Theater in Paris, France just as Led Zeppelin's second album was bout to be released. It features excellent versions of "Good Times Bad Times"/"Communication Breakdown" in medley form. Then a killer version of "I Can't Quit You Baby". Also it's one of the first live versions of "Heartbreaker" which just burns. Next is "Dazed and Confused" which is awesome in this early live version before the band would extend this track to over 30 years on in later years. Then it's a medley of "White Summer"/"Black Mountain Side" which is a better version IMHO than the one that appeared on the 1990 Zeppelin box set IMHO. Next is "You Shook Me" which has Jonesy playing bass guitar for a change as all live versions prior had him on organ but a kick*ss version. Next is "Moby Dick" which is excellent and is one of the earliest live recordings of the late John Bonham's drum solo showcase. We close with the epic "How Many More Times" which just screams epic! There is some echo hear and there but remember this was done in years before Pro-Tools. Also is packaged in a triple gatefold and comes with a stellar booklet with awesome pictures.

As 1968 was going into 1969, former Yardbirds guitarist Jimmy Page had set on a new adventure-Led Zeppelin.
On this, Led Zeppelin's eponymous maiden-voyage, it kicks off with "Good Times, Bad Times" a straight-ahead rocker that delivers with its instrumentation behind the vocals of Robert Plant. Love those brief bass solos by John Paul Jones. "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" gives the group its description with their sound(not in that order name-wise) blending tender acoustic and heavy backup mid-way through[The latter contains that "classic" descending riff used on The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and Chicago's "25 Or 6 To 4",coincidently]. "You Shook Me" gives the band its roots on blues with excellent slide guitar work, harmonica and organ playing. "Dazed And Confused" kicks in with a descending bass riff followed by guitar work employing the wah-wah pedal and a violin bow technique which became a live classic subsequently that stretched longer and longer in time length-wise. The organ intro on "Your Time Is Gonna Come" by John Paul Jones would almost rival the intro on The Band's "Chest Fever"[off Music From Big Pink] before this song's take-off and note on the chorus is sung with all four members of Zeppelin[The only time the group sings background vocals before Robert Plant took to vocal overdubs with the sometime help of drummer John Bonham's harmony vocals]. Also worth mentioning on "Your Time" is the one and only time Page employs pedal steel guitar which he claimed in Guitar Player magazine he hasn't used before or since. "Black Mountain Side" is a Page instrumental with the similar tuning as his song on The Yardbirds' Little Games "White Summer" which he subsequently combined as a medley in concert. "Communication Breakdown" rocks things up once again at a moderate pace with a great guitar break clocking in at the two and a half minute mark. It's the blues once again with "I Cant Quit You Baby"[Like "You Shook Me" this was also penned by Willie Dixon, the chief staff writer, session bassist and producer for Chess records] and it's as basic as it gets meaning no extra overdubs with keyboards, harmonica nor second guitar. This version was based on the Otis Rush version with the half-step chord sequence included and not only that Page also used a strap the bore the name Otis Rush besides. "How Many More Times" wraps up this album with an eight and a half minute finish with a bass riff kick-off, wah-wah guitar, violin bow technique as done in "Dazed" but with more furor and passion not to mention a lyrical quote from "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine". For all guitar enthusiasts, Jimmy Page would forsake his beloved Telecaster he was using in favor of a Gibson Les Paul after this release which became his trademark guitar.
The bonus disc featured here is a live show performed at The Olympia in Paris and transmitted for the BBC from October 1969, which features most of the debut albums' numbers with the inclusions of "Heartbreaker" and "Moby Dick" from Led Zeppelin II and the medleys of "Good Times, Bad Times"/"Communication Breakdown" and "White Summer"/"Black Mountain Side". Not a bad beginning for the 2014 remasters. Want to get the Led out? Start right here! Don't delay!

Thought I was getting just the 180 gram remaster. Was delighted to find that this was a 3 album set with the early well recorded live concert from way back in the day. 1968 I think. The product description was very vague when I bought it. It was on sale for a good price for just the 180 gram. Very happy with this. Sounds great. Good quality all way around. No need to explain how good the album is, as most everyone knows Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest rock bands of all time if not the best. Maybe someone screwed up my order. That's how it feels. Kinda one of those, START THE CAR, moments when I opened it up. All the albums are 180 gram. Have to find a protector sleeve that fits it though. It's huge!
