Kings of Carrion (Juniper Unraveling Book 3) Kindle Edition
Those of us who’ve survived the Calico experiments know the only thing more terrifying than the monsters that seek to ravage what’s left of us, are the men who created them. Ones too capable of hiding their true form, and burying their darkest secrets.
Somewhere beneath the facility lies the answers, a cure for our suffering. To reach it, we’ll have to open the haunting tomb, where man’s deadliest mistakes, the most violent mutations, lie trapped within its tunnels, waiting to be set free.
Our only hope in surviving them are the very Alphas who were designed to hunt us down. The titans forged by cruelty and pain.
Kings of carrion.
We taught them to love, and in turn, they vow to protect us. To deliver the cure for humanity’s sake. Except this world doesn’t give without taking, and any chance of saving us will require the greatest sacrifice of all.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2025I feel like I died many times reading this. I love it. This is by far the best one yet!. Oh poor Cadmus! My man! Loved the epilogues, though. I laughed, reading them. I feel like this series is so dark and sad, and the fire between the characters is just amazing. Best book in the series, and this is why Keri Lake is one of my top 3 fav authors.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2024This is the third book in this series. I loved them all, but this one has my heart😭😭 I felt every emotion there is from this book. I cant put this book away from my mind, and I think it will always stay with me. Its a masterpiece😭❤️❤️
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2019I loved the first book, Juniper Rising, about Wren and Six. It was unique, exciting, and gutwrenching, despite its incredibly dark aspects.
The 2nd book with Cali and Valdys was not as good, but still hard to put down, though I never quite understood Cali's obsession with Valdys, as opposed to either Cadmus or Titus. Was it just because he was more poetic and complementary? Was it because she was shot up with his pheremones? What? They really only spent a few nights together and a few days sitting in the silence in the dark before that. What, like a week or maybe two, all together, before she was madly, obsessively devoted to him. At least that was how the text made it seem unless I missed some critical paragraph somewhere.
The reason thats relevant now is just that Cali goes around in this book willfully using Titus and Cadmus to get to Valdys. They stand by her for months, protect her, feed her and tend her every 'need' without once asking for the least consideration in return -- which is probably a good thing, because she doesn't give it. All that jazz in book 2 about being bonded to all three is only really them being attached to her, and her being dependent on them, IMHO.
Add to that, Cali being willing to literally expose the entire world to the same risks she waxes philosophical about Szolen having done, by casually leaving the containment of the hospital wide open for the mutations to escape... she is bold enough to say often that she doesn't care about anyone else except her and Valdys, and she proves that by using anyone she can to get her way...
Yeah, in this book, I couldn't stand Cali. Not. One. Iota. The woman was a selfish wretch by the end. Grrr...
Wren and Six make another appearance however and the author does a nice job drawing them back into the plot and tying it all together. Wren, thankfully, doesn't erode as a character the way Cali did, so at least I didn't despise her by the end. (though I did skim over the last chapters, because...not my thing.) Some plot weaknesses became glaring apparent by then, which was irritating by the time I was ready to have Titus club Cali over the noggin for being so self absorbed. like how she forgets what the others have been through constantly, even her precious Valdys. >.< Otherwise, the plot weaknesses were pretty forgivable, if I'm honest -- mostly because the meat of the story is engaging for most of the book, which makes it easier to shrug off the little details that don't add up. At least for me. The author did a fantastic job making the action scenes full of tension and conflict - no doubt about it.
All in all, I would recommend the series to mature adults who are into the whole zombie apocalypse/ Resident Evil type genre, with a chilling dose of the worst of human nature, hearkening back to Holocaust, thrown in. It truly is a dark, dark story.
If you are a true romance lover you will be happy to know (without spoilers) that all the beloved tropes are upheld... High heat content (though nowhere near the heart-melting sweetness of Juniper Rising), HFN/HEA, and so on.
Regardless, only mature readers with a bit of masochistic delight in the horror genres should probably read this series. As it stands, I don't know if I can stomach reading the next book the author has planned or if I should just let things be.

Physical pain is one that often promises an end. But the pain of loss is eternal. It’s the heart’s way of reminding us how fragile it is. How easily it can shatter.
We are broken pieces, stitched together by the pain of our losses. I don’t know if we’ll ever be fixed again.
Yet, we carry on, with bruised hearts and torn skin, because we love, and that’s what gives us purpose. Air gives us breath. Food gives us strength. And love gives us hope. In a world of monsters, love makes us human.
Thoughts: 💡
This story follows all the characters of the past two novels, but they suffer in new ways. It wrecked my faith in humanity even more. This book continued to highlight the importance of morality in science and revealed what unchecked greed can look like the problems it creates.
This book produced whole new scenarios of horror and tragedy and continued to throw surprise twists at me. I didn’t expect most of what happened. The romance was strong in this story, but so was the tragedy.
The world building, character development, and writing mechanics were brilliantly executed. The details were all connected and the prose was beautiful.

This is the 3rd installment of the Juniper Unraveling Series. You need to read Juniper Unraveling and Calico Descending before tackling this book. This book spends a lot of time focusing on how amoral people in power take advantage others and the lifelong physical and mental scars that result. It's also an amazing story of how people are stronger than they think and overcome tremendous obstacles in the name of a better future. This book wraps up what happens to the people we've come to care most about in a way that will have you cheering, screaming, and crying until the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars EMOTIONAL, INTENSE & GRIPPING STORY. I could not put this down!
Keri Lake, you SLAY me. Kings of Carrion had me feeling every possible emotion. It broke me wide open.
Kings of Carrion is story of bravery, sacrifice and fierce devotion in a corrupt world that has destroyed all but the last shreds of humanity. It is the third book in the Juniper Unraveling series, and I think the most intense of all of them so far. These characters go through an insane, action-packed and devastating adventure, facing unimaginable horrors, and yet, they carry an unrelenting hope inside of them. In true Keri Lake fashion, the dark in this book serves to illuminate the light in such a masterful way.

With each book in this series, I find myself more obsessed. During Calico Descending, I was a little skeptical about where things were headed, but after reading Kings of Carrion all my doubts have been thrown out the window. Out the freaking window. In this book, the characters' instincts to survive and protect one another in the midst of such horrifying circumstances is palpable and raw. The action and suspense, particularly in the second half, had me physically vibrating, so utterly invested in what was to happen to these characters that I've come to feel so much for! And the way that these novels are structured as a whole, with two separate storylines that collide in the middle is GENIUS. Keri is the master of multiple timelines and multiple point of views, I've never found an author that comes close to working this type of magic.
Mrs. Lake, how is it you can create a world where horror and hope tango together so desperately? My heart broke open for these characters over and over, and it will be awhile before I feel whole again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping untill the very last page.
I have been suprised that that this series held my interest untill the last page.
Keri Lake is a very talented writer, in terms of keeping the reader guessing throughout this trilogy.
The way she narrates its easy to see environment world is set in and I think its how the story is so easy to follow.
At no point does the story drag or lull, your kept guess throughout the story. There is a darkness to this story that makes the small rays of hope that more meaningful.
The character development in these stories is well executed, they have real depth and woven well together as the story unravels over the book. I read these one aftet the other and in 3 days.
Brilliant series which will keep you engaged throughout. This dark adult dystopian story is an original story you will be consumed with.
