About the author
Val Tobin writes stories worth losing sleep over, drawing on her shady past as a software/web developer and her master's degree in parapsychology. No butter tart is safe when she's around, especially if there's tequila to go with it.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2015I purchased this book expecting a typical romance. Sexy, protective, struggling boy meets wild, spoiled rich girl. Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan styled trouble came to mind. What I got was a gripping, heartfelt story about two people trying to find themselves in spite of opposition from every turn. Yes, Dani was rich but not spoiled. She used her success to help others because of her difficult and abusive childhood. And…because she recognized that without someone taking a chance on her, she may not have experienced her own success. Cope was definitely sexy and protective but not really struggling. He came from a rich family and could have taken the easy way through life but chose independence over reliance on his family – in spite of his parent’s constant attempts to interfere at every turn.
There was a lot I liked about this novel. The characters were well developed and their story drew you in from the first page. Dani is a tragic, wounded soul who turns to alcohol to fill the holes in her life. Cope is just the right man to show her love is a better solution. It was easy to relate to both Dani and Cope and believe they were going to overcome the odds and make it. The plot flowed smoothly and there was enough romance and suspense to keep you engaged until the very end. This book was a great read and I would highly recommend it for those looking for the escape of a good romance with the added bonus of depth and intrigue.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2016I downloaded Injury mainly because of the beautiful cover and genre. I love romance and was pleasantly surprised even with the trigger warning in place.
The writing style pulled me into the story from the beginning. Immediately, I was empathetic for Daniella and wanted to see how everything played out. Raised to believe her father had left because he no longer wanted to be bothered by her, she worked hard in her career with hopes that he’d see her and be proud. So yeah, pulled at my heartstrings once she realized that was all for nothing.
The story evolves from there and it’s easy to understand Daniella’s issues due to her terrible upbringing. But Daniella seeks comfort in the arms of an unlikely source, her limo driver, Cope. There’s more to Cope than meets the eye.
Major obstacles stand in their way and the author weaved the right amount of suspense to make this an engaging read.
The only problem I had was the romantic connection between the two main characters. I kept teetering back and forth on whether I felt the draw between them. In the beginning, their intimate relationship seemed a little rushed, but then as the story developed, I could really feel their connection.
If you're like me and enjoy romance with a little suspense, you will enjoy this story. The story is well written, and I'd definitely recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2016Injury is a well-written and suspenseful romantic tale.
Daniella Grayson was a successful actress. She was rich, famous, and had a following of fans, yet she was troubled and unhappy. Having grown up in a dysfunctional home with an abusive mother and an absent father, Daniella sought comfort where she could. Unfortunately, Daniella chose the party life, with alcoholic drinking and unhealthy relationships. True love was nothing, but a fairy tale to Daniella, until Robert Copeland (Cope), became more to her than just a chauffeur. Not everyone, though, was happy with Daniella's new love life, especially an obsessive, dangerous, and cruel ex-lover.
The two main characters, Daniella, and Cope were easy to become involved with because their characters were well-developed and their dialogue natural. Cope was my favorite character. I loved his caring and understanding nature. Daniella won me over. She worked hard to heal her inner demons and stop her self-destructive behavior. It was easy to root for this couple. I would have liked to have known Cope’s parents better and experience with them the events that lead them to their ultimate decision. And the ex-lover, well let’s just say, that the author crafts a perfect villain to add suspense and depth to this story.
I enjoyed reading Injury and would recommend it to anyone who savors compelling romantic tales.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2015This was an okay read. However, I lost interest half-way and couldn't finish.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2015I fell in love with this book for reasons I’m not even sure of yet. As soon as I started reading, I couldn’t put it down until I had missed half a nights worth of sleep just to reach the end.
Daniella is an actress with major issues. She grew up without a father and a mother who probably shouldn’t have had kids. That tragic childhood translated into an adult drinking problem and a love of older me, no matter how sleazy they might be.
We’ve all read stories about those on top falling in love with the help so it might seem like the same old thing when we read about Cope, the handsome limo driver. But it’s not. Daniella is not slumming it- or at least she doesn’t see it that way. Cope is more than he seems and he might just be the only person that can save Daniella from herself.
There is something so tragic about Daniella that draws you to her. She is a brilliantly written character and all you end up wanting is for everything to be okay for her. Cope is the hero and you never second guess if he’s going to save the day because you believe in him. It takes great writing to evoke those kind of feelings in the reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2017During parts of this story I forgot it was a romance. It wasn't all sweetness and sunshine, and even though there is a romantic HEA the story felt like so much more than that. There are some elements in the story that could trigger someone, but as someone who had similar experiences in life I found it more heartrendingly beautiful. The complexities of the characters made for a richer story than just a typical romance. I wanted to reach into the story and wrap my arms around Dani more than once. The story line is believable and even at it's most painful it is full of hope. I highly recommend this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars When you have it all, you just need security.
The romantic novels genre has seen many faces under many a different pen. In each case, I have to say, such stories I've avoided. My reasons were simple, the stories are usually predictable and somewhat repetitive. It was with some trepidation then that I picked up this novel and began to read.
Firstly, I found the writing style of the author very precise, flowing nicely and with enough detail to put me in each scene. The book reminded me of a movie, Daniella Grayson, slightly rebellious Goddess of the silver screen, seemingly has the perfect life. We learn of her harsh upbringing, the slaying of her father, and the abuse at the hands of a controlling mother, which explains some of the less glamorous traits exhibited by our star.
Enter the lowly Copeland. Hunk of a driver with a background to rival that of his charge, Daniella. In service to her, unrequited love spreads over into a time when dating the chauffeur no longer holds them back. The glittering career of Daniella in an upcoming movie presents opportunity for yet another of the darker elements of her life to resurface, with violent consequences.
Daniella becomes the object of desire once more to the sadistic dual personality that is Greg Henderson. What follows is nothing short of obsession, culminating in just desserts for all.
While not my usual read, I found the story believable, the characters warm when needed and dislikeable on cue. There are some well written, subtly subdued physical scenes which convey the passion without stooping to x-rated levels. I liked that.
This is the first book I've read by Val Tobin and I can assure you, it won't be the last. As a first step into the thriller romance genre, I chose well in this author and novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read
I downloaded this book a few months ago during a countdown deal, but only recently got to reading it.
With the trigger warning in the synopsis, I knew there were going to be times where I’d have to skim because of the sexual abuse/graphic nature. I’m not usually one to read stories that involve this type of violence, but decided to step out of my comfort zone. And I’m glad I did.
I thought the premise of the story was good, although I had trouble relating to the main character at first. In fact, she annoyed me a lot in the beginning, but I think this was the author’s intent. Who could feel sorry for an alcoholic actress with daddy issues who constantly hit on her very married manager?
However, after having a moment with her personal chauffeur, a switch seems to flip and she starts evaluating her life.
I feel Cope brought the best out in Danni, and found her much more likeable as the book went on.
I liked that the story had other things going on other than just the romance. It has moments of action and suspense as well, which is a good way to break up the same old romance plot of boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back.
The only real issue I had was the characterisation of Cope’s mother. I don’t believe that his mother (Spoiler: who spends most of the book trying to tear down Danni and Cope’s relationship) would be so quick to change her mind. It was unrealistic and didn’t match the character that had been set up throughout the whole book. Where Danni’s growth throughout the book was gradual, hers seem to be immediate.
While I wouldn’t have minded seeing a bit of a twist or something unexpected, it was a decent read and really well-written.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Highly Entertaining Read
Was it the North American slang? Or the Hollywood setting? One or both of these elements made me reluctant to move beyond the first chapters of this book. Of course, there are many readers for whom these things will prove attractive.
Fortunately the central protagonist, Danniela Grayson, is so well realised that I could not help wanting to read more in order to discover how her career and her relationships would develop. She has won an Oscar for her role in a movie and now a sequel is planned. The problem is that, in the meantime, her affair with the male co-star has faltered because of his abusive behaviour. Can she resolve the conflict between the need to act the part of his on-screen lover whilst in fear of his real-life obsession with her?
Meanwhile she has fallen for her chauffeur/bodyguard whose mother believes him to be too good for her; a classic romance theme redolent of Romeo and Juliet.
Memories of ill-treatment by her mother come back to haunt her. That abuse in her childhood has steeled her to cope with adversity as an adult. In the past she has turned to drink and drugs to hide the pain. Now she is strong enough to resist these temptations. Which is a problem for me. Why does the discovery that her father is dead, murdered by her mother, bring about this transformation? I would have preferred at least to see some back-sliding on her part.
As another reviewer has suggested, (spoiler alert!) the sudden change of heart by her future mother-in-law also lacks credibility. Despite that, the book is highly entertaining as her former co-star goes of the rails and ... I can't tell you what he does, that really will spoil things for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars more than just a romance.
Injury is more than just a romance book, you will find a mixture of suspense, action and great characterisation. I don't ordinarily read romance but I had previously read The Experiencers by this author and loved her writing style.
In Injury, the female protagonist , Dani, is initially portrayed as a weak individual reliant on drink and drugs to help her through her upbringing present life and acting career. Val Tobin gradually and skilfully shapes Dani into a strong woman 'finding herself' in someone's arms rather than at the bottom of a Martini bottle. It was good to see her change the liquor bottle for a mineral water I felt like I really got to know Dani Grayson.
The romance element is dealt with in a passionate manner through the narrative and the violence/assault like the bedroom scenes are not overly done or even near to bordering on the offensive. Like I said, Val Tobin has produced a skilful novel that examines all kinds of emotion that has resulted in Injury.
