On 13 June 2020, Patrick Hutchinson, a black man, was photographed carrying a white injured man to safety during a confrontation in London between Black Lives Matter demonstrators and counter-protestors. The powerful image was shared and discussed all around the world.

Everyone versus Racism is a poignant letter from Patrick to his children and grandchildren. Writing from the heart, he describes the realities of life as a black man today and why we must unite to inspire change for generations to come.

About the Author

Patrick Hutchinson is a personal trainer and a children’s athletics coach from south London who received worldwide attention after he was photographed carrying an injured counter-protestor to safety during a Black Lives Matter demonstration in central London. The photograph, which was taken by Dylan Martinez at a protest in response to the killing of George Floyd and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been upheld as a defining moment of 2020 and the BLM movement. As a proud father-of-four and a grandfather-of-four, family is at the heart of everything for Patrick and if he isn’t training you will find him taking care of his children and grandchildren, who are the most important things to him of all.

A must-read book
A powerful and very well-written book that I couldn’t put down. It’s full of deep insights into racism - I’d say those insights are particularly helpful for parents and teachers - people responsible for shaping young minds. I’d highly recommend it.

If want to know more about the Author after his heroic act during the BLM protests. Want to find out who raised such an amazing human being, and what his childhood was like. I recommend this book. If you want a better understanding of what growing up from a young black boy, to a black man in London is like, I recommend this book. If you want to know what we can all do to ensure there is a better world for the next generation and beyond, read this book. Despite what he himself has been through in his life, he the Author has managed to still remain a positive and a realistic advocate for change. This book is not only though provoking and informative. This book is an important read for everyone and gives great insight into what shaped this man and the reasons behind his actions.

Patrick Hutchinson, you Sir are amazing. What you are doing for the community is outstanding. We need more people like you in this world. I hope this letter, and your actions continue to encourage real change for us all.

I have recently just read this book and honestly could not put it down. Some really relatable aspects which made me reminisce on my own upbringing. Crucial statistics which whilst honest, are disturbing to think these things are still happening in today’s time. This was an informative read with some fantastic poetic lines thrown in. I completed the book with an optimistic view of the future and renewed hope that whilst there is still work to do, if we all play our part to eradicate this disease called racism, society will be a better place. I would definitely recommend this book.

This open letter was everything I hoped for and more. As a black person I wanted the book to capture what living as a black person is like in the UK and it surpassed those standards. This book also delivers on its impact to empower and the importance of love, compassion and brotherhood. It has reminded me to dwell on those moments of innocence, unconditional love and beauty that a child has the ability to radiate and how in those moments we can can be as close to a higher power as possible.

Patrick is able to illustrate how chosing love not rage is the best thing we can do. Everyone needs to fight racism ...brothers and sisters...from all backgrounds. The education on Black history is lacking and often not delivered appropriately.

I would encourage everyone to read this book. If you are from a different background this book will allow you to walk in Patrick's shoes and hopefully you will get a taste of how exhausting and limiting this life can be at times.

This book was recommended to me by a friend some time ago. I didn't have time to read it until now. It has reminded me that the fight goes on even when individuals stop because they're tired. As a 60 year old white mother of two black children I have done that, I stopped fighting because they started. I can do that, that privilege is mine and this letter reminded me how wrong that is. I will use your mantra UTCAI and take up your challenge to change and inspire where I can. Thank you for a great read that humbled and inspired me. Look forward to the next books.

If you're white and wonder how it feels to be a black man in Britain. Here's your information.

I found this book very informative.

Patrick really explained parts of history that I had never even thought about and touches on humanity at the core. Despite all the Racism and prejudice he received growing up, his heart is full of love and he is surrounded by a loving family which no one can deny him. The book really portrays how rich he is in love.
It is shameful that human beings can treat other human beings with such distain and disrespect simply because their skin is darker.

He has channeled his energies into sports (martial arts) which helped him become a disciplined and rational human being. This helped him overcome the racism he received from society on a daily bases

Patrick you should be very very proud of yourself as I’m sure your family are.
