From the Author

Were you wondering where I got the idea for Don't Know Jack and my whole Hunt for Jack Reacher Series? Well, here's the true story.

"Where is Reacher hiding?" I asked my friend, Lee Child, at a writers' event in New York City.

"Reacher doesn't hide," Lee said. Maybe a little huffily?

Lee's a lot bigger than me. And he writes violence like a man with experience. I've always thought him a gentle giant, but .... I backpedaled a bit.

"Right. But where does Reacher live?"

"Wherever he wants," the tall guy said.

I thought I detected a slight challenge in his tone.I backed out of arms' reach before I pressed on.

Like my characters, I don't know when to quit sometimes. We call it tenacity, but maybe it's plain old stubbornness.

"Okay, well, Reacher waits until trouble finds him and then he wipes the floor with the bad guys. Perfect. But what's he doing between books?"

Lee shrugged, said nothing.

I took a deep breath and tried again. "Reacher's killed a lot of people by now. A lot of books. A lot of bodies. Surely someone wants payback, don't you think?"

Lee leveled the patented Reacher stare at me. His tone was menacing now. "Who in his right mind would go looking for Reacher? You?"

Good question.

Only an idiot with a death wish -- or an FBI agent who knows nothing about Reacher's, er, talents -- would undertake such a foolhardy quest.

Even then, she wouldn't do it if she had a choice. She's not an idiot.

But matching wits with Jack Reacher, now that would be interesting, I thought, even though it could very well be deadly.

Then again, the bigger they are the harder they fall.

Whoever tames Reacher will become a legend in some circles.

What if a determined, ambitious woman .....

Not long afterward, with Lee's full support and encouragement, I began writing what became the first book in my
Hunt for Jack Reacher series.

Lee loves what I've done with it. In fact, here's what he said, "Kim Otto is a great, great character. I love her."

To date, more than a million readers have joined the hunt and read my books.
Don't Know Jack and the other books in my series have made every bestseller list out there, several times. How cool is that?

I'm hoping you'll love Kim Otto, too. She's a tiny stick of dynamite with a deadly aim. And her partner, Carlos Gaspar, is a devoted family man who might have turned out to be a loner like Reacher, in an alternate universe. Two FBI Special Agents on the hunt for Reacher who never, ever give up.

Find out what happens in
Don't Know Jack. And work your way through the whole series as Otto and Gaspar find out that what they don't know can be more deadly than Reacher.

Oh, you might want to read Lee Child's
Killing Floor either before or after Don't Know Jack. Many readers tell me that these books are even better together.

Readers often ask for a list of the titles in
The Hunt for Jack Reacher Series paired with their Lee Child/Jack Reacher source books.

Diane Capri was an awesome find. She took Lee Child's Reacher series and turned it into a fast paced thriller. I had trouble putting it down. I cannot wait to get the second book. It surpassed all my expectations and took Reacher to a new level. Who is this mystery man and why are they really hunting for him? Guess you'll have to read it to find out.

I need to start with a couple of observations about some of the reviews I have read so far.

The reviewers I have read seem to have some misunderstandings about what is going on with this particular book.. They also seem to be woefully ignorant of the fact that Lee Child has given his blessings to this series.

For the record, I have read all of the available Reacher books from Lee Child (and anxiously awaiting the new title in September of this year). This series seemed to be a way to kill some time waiting for the newest Reacher release. I was not disappointed. I found the book entertaining, well-written, fast-paced, and a good homage to Reacher.

The point of this book was in the title. If the FBI agents in question make some bad assumptions about Reacher, it's because they don't know Jack! It is also the case that information has been withheld from them, so no wonder they get off to a false start. In fact, their entire mission is a red herring. Once the reader realizes this, the story get to be rather interesting and spellbinding.

Books are funny things. Sometimes people just don't happen to like a particular work.Sometimes, it is because of flaws in the author's technique: poor plotting, bad characterization, lack of proper editing, etc., etc. Sometimes it is because people just don't like the characters. I found no insurmountable flaws in Diane Capri's efforts. Yes, there were some scenes that probably could have been more polished. But I think that overall, the plot and the lead characters were intriguing, spell-binding, and entertaining. After all, that is why I read this type of story and I think Ms. Capri did a credible bit of writing. I am looking forward to reading the other stories in this series.

To those who think Jack Reacher's - or Lee Child's - reputation has been sullied by this series, I have some advice: Chill! You didn't happen to like it. Don't be surprised if other people did.

I would consider this book worth the time. If you don't like it, that is your prerogative. That is what makes the world of literature so fascinating. Not everybody likes the same thing. If we did, then the world would be a much less interesting place. Vive la differénce!

Right off the bat, two things to address.

Number one: I am the world's number one Jack Reacher fan (I also love Richard Sharpe and a few other characters, but none more so that Reacher).

Number two:  I received this Kindle book free in exchange for an honest product review as part of an established Review program not associated with Amazon or any other e-book dealer.

That said, I had bought one of the "Hunt for Jack Reacher" series before getting this offer. Fortunately I held off reading until I picked up this first book.

IMO, a reader will get more out of this book by having read the Jack Reacher series (and for this book, especially "The Killing Floor")... as it is important that you DO know Jack (pun intended).

Because in this book the main (and future) protagonists - a female and male FBI agent - clearly do NOT know Jack. And their lack of knowledge of Reacher complicates things for them tremendously. At times that makes for interest to the story line (but at other times is infuriating as one finds themselves wondering why characters in the book who did know Reacher aren't more forthcoming in regard their knowledge about him... And yet another reason to have read up on the Jack Reacher series - characters from his continuing storyline pop up, with some major roles, in this book and presumably in future one).

With this being basically Book One in the series, I feel that it is off to a relatively good start. It definitely holds one's interest. There are plot twists galore (sometimes too many? But then the Jack Reacher series was often famous for that also). If one is the type to try and keep up with the (known) facts and try to "figure out the case", then you will definitely be on their toes (and doing a lot of backtracking).

On the negative side, I'm not sure that I am a big fan yet of the two protagonists. They are FBI agents but seem to get overly fixated on a specific theory rather than constantly keeping all options open (I have, aside from military experience, a 29-year career in law enforcement so things like procedures, weapons, gun fighting techniques and tactics, combatives, crime procedures, reviewing evidence constantly, thinking out potentials, etcetera, are always at the forefront when reading things like this). I agree that often they were not provided information that they could have been - whether by their superiors, high level "shadowy figures", and important book characters - about particulars of both the story and Reacher that they could have been provided (and sometimes for no really noticeable reason).

So my "attachment" to the protagonists will be something that I will have to see how it develops as I continue through the series.

Which I definitely will be (as well as starting up my 3rd, or 4th?, re-read of the Jack Reacher series... it's that time again!).

Now I'm going to buy the third book in the series. I looked up the author and found out he's not a girl, he's a male Carol. The book is a challenge to remember the plot. Now I'm starting to think about Greek Mythology and the story of Hercules. The Greeks needed a hero at the time and figured out Hercules. This book contains a hero, Jack Reacher. He seems good, smart, kind, honourable with women. A good (in the ethical sense) hero.I could write more on this review but want to go to the next book.

I bought this book because I aA Jack Reacher fan. Had read some reviews and a good few were scathing. But it’s Reacher based so I got it. Glad I did. Whilst not in true Reacher fashion it had mysteries, decent Characters and had you guessing even on the last pages. Going to keep reading but I think the cost of the books might put me off eventually.
