- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2015LZ fans know that their canon of work is the most guarded and reserved for all of the major bands/ artists in rock and roll. That established, Jimmy Page has done justice to their legacy in these recent remastered and bonus track releases. I have purchased all of the new releases, as they have been incrementally issued, so when the final "pick up the pieces" 'Coda' album was issued, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to unleash the vault gems.....
First of all, the deluxe box package is extremely lavish, continuing with the pics and artifacts from their concert and tours of that respective time. The original album disc is true to the 1982 release, but with a much improved sonic update. In my opinion, the bonus tracks on the companion discs, (two for this release), are: "If It Keeps On Raining" (When the Levee Breaks) -- sans the monstrous ambient sound from LZ IV, this version is compelling simply for John Bonham's drum work. Not as intense as the original version, but still an unheard, tasty gem. "Sugar Mama" -- early release in the beginning days of their studio time, it harkens to Page's final days with the Yardbirds. "St. Tristan's Sword" -- an excellent instrumental track from the 1970 LZ III sessions....may have been planned as a full track with vocals, but is presented here without Plants contribution. Great Les Paul/ Marshall rhythm work by Page coupled with Jones/ Bonham master backing. A differing mix of "Bonzo's Montreux" is present, giving a new insight into the complex overdubs of percussion and drums. One lost opportunity -- an extended complete release of the "Moby Dick" solo would be nice. I didn't know until recently that the original LZ II '69 release is edited.
All of the unreleased tracks that surfaced on the 1990 and '93 boxsets have been included here, so none of those are overlooked. And finally, much has been written about the two tracks recorded in India in 1972 with the Bombay Orchestra. I expected "Friends" to surface on the LZ III companion disc -- I was very disappointed that it wasn't.....so, on the LZ IV companion release, I expected redemption by including "Four Sticks" and "Friends". No such luck -- I thought this was a big lost opportunity. These companion discs represent the perfect occasion to make these lost gems available, so I was pleasantly surprised and very excited to see that Jimmy Page has included them here....anyone familiar with the Page/ Plant "Unledded/ No Quarter" project, will recognize the genesis of those said tracks.
So, steadfast fans may need to accept that this is probably it --- I wouldn't expect any more studio tracks from Led Zeppelin's brilliant career. Hopefully, more live releases will be issued. How about a full comprehensive issue of 1975's Earl Courts shows in CD and DVD? We know it exists.....what are you waiting for? We're not getting any younger here.....
So, here are some precious tracks that have never seen the light of day since, in some cases, as long as 47 years.
Highly recommended -- its well worth it.....
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2015Released two years after the 1980 death of John Bonham, Coda tied up most of the loose ends Led Zeppelin left hanging: it officially issued a bunch of tracks circulating on bootleg and it fulfilled their obligation to Atlantic Records. Coda doesn't contain every non-LP track Zeppelin released -- notably, the B-side "Hey Hey What Can I Do" and anything from the BBC sessions were left untouched (they'd be added to Coda on a 1993 CD revision of the compilation, and also appear on the major three-disc overhaul Jimmy Page masterminded in 2015) -- but it does gather much of what was floating around in the wake of their demise, including three blistering rockers that were rejected for In Through the Out Door. If "Ozone Baby," "Darlene," or "Wearing and Tearing" -- rockers that alternately cut loose, groove, and menace -- had made the cut for In Through the Out Door, that album wouldn't have had its vague progressive edge and when they're included alongside a revival of the band's early raver "We're Gonna Groove," the big-boned funk of the Houses of the Holy outtake "Walter's Walk," and the folk stomp "Poor Tom" (naturally taken from the sessions for Led Zeppelin III), they wind up underscoring the band's often underappreciated lighter side. For heaviness, there's a live version of "I Can't Quit You Baby" and "Bonzo's Montreux," a solo showcase for the departed drummer, and when this pair is added to the six doses of hard-charging rock & roll, it amounts to a good snapshot of much of what made Led Zeppelin a great band: when they were cooking, they really did groove.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2020Five stars? Really? Well...No...not really. The original Coda rated 4...maybe 3.5 stars. But, this ain't your grandma's Coda. You can read about the Bonus material elsewhere. That bonus material ensures that this re-use, re-master makes the TOTAL package rating to 5 Stars.
The songs from the original Coda sound impressively fresh. The years since the sad circumstances constricting the release of the original Coda now allows us to see the overview of Led Zeppelin's existence. Bonham may not have been Zeppelin, but the band died with the drummer.
The out-take selections on the original Coda now trace Led Zeppelin from early thrashing to unexpected end. From sweaty, live music to studio fragments to orphaned recordings. In the days of vinyl, 40 minutes of content per disc (both sides) meant that a perfectly recorded song from the last album could not find a home on the next disc either. It becomes an artifact from a different era. Artistic work without an audience. So Coda, even being created from leftovers, had leftovers. It is these leftovers (two discs worth) that push this expanded title to five-star status.
Sound: A-
Content: very Zeppelinesque
Presentation: A
Value: generally high; absolute necessity (for the completist; good bang for the bank
Non-music bonus content: informative and fun

5.0 out of 5 stars If it’s Led Zepelin…
It’s brilliant. Vinyl sounds excellent, this album only about 34 mins consists of eight cast off tracks from other albums. They are raw and as expected with Zep great to test the speakers with. It’s one of my favourite Zepelin albums, rock “n” roll at its finest!
