Calixta, The Vanquishers of Alhambra, a Grimdark fantasy Kindle Edition
Those devious Virtues gave me magic and sent me back to the Kingdom of Alhambra, and I have no idea how to use this magic.
When I returned to life a few days later, a devil of a man named Jadro started looking for me. He wants me dead. Why? I honestly do not know. The wretched man found me and killed some of my workers, setting my home on fire—a horrible sight to see the blood of my dear employees flowing on the marble floors of my home.
Now, I am running for my life with three of my closest friends, and I found this so-called First Vanquisher, Lord Ashton Dreyden. He must train me to be a Vanquisher, but I hate him. The man is a hypocrite. I want to roast him alive with my fire magic.
My friends keep dying, and I want to run away with the ones I have left. Oh, but where can I live with an undesirable trade?
Death owns me, the devil is chasing me, and I have magic I don’t know how to use in a world engulfed by evil. I must learn to use my magic and unite with the other two Vanquishers to stop this war of genocide from taking over Alhambra. Can life get any worse? "Oh, look, a dragon; I spoke too soon."
Author’s Note: This is a grimdark but sexy fantasy that some have called a gaslamp fantasy also. It is not for Children or young adults since it has many triggering topics. It is the first in a series, and it ends on a cliffhanger. This has a romance subplot, but is not erotica. For a list of CW, please visit the author’s website. omayra-velez.com

- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2023While I sit staring at the blinking cursor, trying to put my impressions about “Calixta” by Omayra Vélez into words, forgive me for blurting out: “wow, what a book!”
These are my feelings in a nutshell. But it absolutely won’t do to leave “Calixta” without a proper review. The intense, imaginative, gut-searing, and thought-provoking story of unlocking your true self while fighting against the darkest of evils deserves more.
Calixta is an extraordinary book character. She isn’t what you’d call likeable. Yes, she is strong and beautiful. She is also brave and loyal to the people she loves. Still, she is edgy and harsh, for she’s been disillusioned by the life she’s been forced to live.
The society Calixta belongs to doesn’t give its people any choice. Once labelled, a person must live restricted by the requirements of their trade and harsh laws. Calixta’s trade is not what any person would choose willingly. She is a woman of the night. True, of the highest class. She is talented and educated. But it doesn’t matter to the people of Alhambra.
Calixta has a character of a fighter, so she doesn’t succumb to the fate of someone who can’t do anything to make their life better. She uses the opportunities she’s been given – as scarce and controversial as they are – and rises as high as it’s possible in her situation.
And then, we find out that she isn’t simply a strong-willed Madame of the best brothel in town.
Calixta dies, and her life takes a turn no human laws and restrictions can influence.
The book is not an easy read. There aren’t noble knights in shining armour, throwing red roses to the innocent beautiful ladies. The man who helps Calixta unlock her true identity is – pardon my language – a jerk. He behaves like one and treats the woman, who left him speechless the very moment he saw her for the first time, also like an utter bastard.
There are gruesome scenes in the book. The kind that will make you cringe and want to skip a few pages. I admit – I’ve read every word. In my opinion, they added weight to the importance of the Vanquishers’ mission to restore the balance between good and evil.
Calixta’s thorny road from a scorned but ardently desired Madame to a powerful Vanquisher with unprecedented abilities of a mage is a fascinating read that won’t let you go for a long time after you turn the last page. Ms Vélez masterfully weaves together magical and philosophical elements making the reader experience a whole range of emotions.
“Calixta” is a part of The Vanquishers of Alhambra dark fantasy series. It ends on a cliffhanger, but it didn’t bother me in the slightest, for I know for sure that I’ll be reading Ms Vélez’s next books.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2020This was an interesting read. Definitely goes in the heavy fantasy category. The author has used this book to set the stage for more books to come, while developing the characters well. This book is high paced which makes it keep you focused. It also has some twists and turns you don't see coming. Overall a good book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2022Calixta lives as a brothel owner and sex-worker. Although she is a no-nonsense business woman, she is compassionate to the plight of others and risks her life to save her friend's life. In the process, she gets killed. Then Calixta learns on the Other Side that her life did not go as planned. Her self-sacrifice earned her another chance so she is sent back to live again. The nature of this story is filled with dark themes that could trigger certain people: human trafficking, rape, murder, horrible demons, among other things. This story is not a complete story arc, but part of a series. I found it to be a fascinating and imaginative tale.
I much prefer when an author chooses to show, rather than rely upon a narrative, telling approach, as is done in this book. The many action scenes could have been much more effective and vivid. However, Ms. Velez has a flair for words and her telling, for the most part, is done with style.
I came to like the characters in the story and the camaraderie between Calixta and her friends. I think this book is a great choice for fans of dark fantasy!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2022Excellent storyline and character development. I am thirsting for the sequel. Imaginative detailed story reads like a movie in my head. I can see the characters and the story as it happened.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2020The story takes place in a fantasy world following Calixta, a high-end sex worker and owner of the city's most illustrious brothel. A serious of events lead her to discover that she is a Vanquisher- a warrior destined to fight evil and live a life of virtue. The world that Calixta lives in is semi fantasy/semi modern society filled with a complex caste system and run by a highly bureaucratic government designed to keep everyone in their place. This creates many challenges for Calixta and her companions, not to mention the evil that lurks in each corner striking at Calixta at every turn. The world is well thought out and the story compels me to pick up the next book to find out what happens next. This book is one in a series and I look forward to seeing how Calixta and her companions grow and take control of their destinies.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2023This book has a very unique beginning and it carries throughout the story. Before I comment about the angel, I want to share this is a dark fantasy and is for adults. I love how the angel is annoyed with Calixta at the beginning but evolves through the story. Calixta is an interesting character with an unusual story. The author takes us on a winding exciting adventure.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2019On a rainy day I finished the book and I have to say that I can’t wait for the next one to come out. I will admit I am not a big reader but this book captivated me somehow. It made me laugh and cry. For me the first couple of chapters had me wondering where the story was headed but after chapter 23 I could not put it down.
Although the front cover shows an angel the book is not a religious book. It is just in a world that has magic, demons, elves, fairies, flying creatures, really bad humans ext ext. If I had to classify it I would say it’s like The hobbit meets Hunger games. I loved it. I took me to a world outside my own where for a brief moment I could forget that I am an adult that must go to work on Monday!
Warning this book is not for kids; there are parts that has really strong language I will let my teenager read it but I am making her skip a chapter that has this said strong language.
The main female character is stubborn, smart and with a temper but as her journey proceeds she changes and I am just so curious where the next book takes her. The main male character I disliked at first but came to appreciate his ways later in the book.
