Whether he's fronting Gov't Mule, playing with the Allman Brothers or the Dead, or sitting in with the innumerable bands he has collaborated live with over the last twenty plus years, Warren Haynes has shown time and time again that he has ability to enter almost any musical situation and create something wonderful. His recording career has focused almost solely on the electric side of his playing, but as he has shown at many festivals and on his Live at Bonaroo album, Haynes is no slouch with the acoustic guitar. The batch of songs he put together for his latest recording, Ashes and Dust, are more in the "singer/songwriter" vein than the "crank up the Les Paul" vein, and Haynes finds himself right at home telling stories accompanied by an acoustic guitar. One of the complaints I always had with Haynes' solo acoustic work was that, even though it was well done, it sounded as though there was something missing. That "something" it turns out was a group of equally talented musicians to accompany him. For the job of accompanying Haynes on Ashes and Dust, he chose Railroad Earth and the results are second to none. Railroad Earth are every bit as talented on their respective instruments as Haynes is on the guitar, and the results of the collaboration are as warm and inviting as anything that has come before. The songs are beautiful, the playing is top notch, and I have no doubt Ashes and Dust will bring Haynes and Co. numerous accolades. Highly recommended.

Excellent show!
I saw Warren and RRE last night LIVE in Cincinnati. They are amazing on stage and I bought Ashes & Dust today. If you get a chance to see them, do so. You'll be glad you did!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2015I'm a big Warren Haynes fan, but I'm thinking he collaborated with Railroad Express to give them more exposure. There's sort of a bluegrass flavor to this album, which I'm not used to with Warren; I'm more into seeing him collaborate with Joe Bonnamassa or Derek Trucks. I bought this MP3 because I heard Gold Dust Woman and Spots of Time on Sirius XM's Jam station and loved them. Turns out, they are the best cuts. Nevertheless, if you're a Warren Haynes fan, you'll probably like this sweet little diversion he's taken from his usual Govt Mule stuff. And if you love bluegrass, you'll think this is a 5-star effort.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2015First of all I'm a hard core Allman Brother, Gov't Mule and Warren Haynes fan.
I bought the Deluxe CD edition. I listened to the demos first and they were difficult to finish, not worthy of the extra disc and price.
The first thing I will say about the CD is what a great backing band he had. Railroad Earth.
He s telling a story on this disc. The lyrics accomplished that. The songs musically seemed to much the same. Excellent musicianship and Warren ' gravely voice. Nothing stood out on this CD except the backing band. It's just ok taken as a whole.
I feel bad that I had to write this review. Warren is one the busiest musicians you'll find. Maybe if he had taken a little time writing his songs it could have a whole lot better. As it was, this is just mundane.
I changed how much I liked this after listening to it couple more times. For me, waiting for his guitar solos is favorite thing he does. There is not as much of it as normal but it's there. I left my original review up. I was wrong about this CD. It's really good.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2015Years from now, it's very possible that this album could be looked at as a major work in the rock n' roll era. Warren takes the idea of American roots music and runs with it further than anyone has before in his own unique way. There are some electric guitar driven songs on here, but most songs create a mood of sitting around a campfire during The Civil War. I find the production to be very effective in creating a certain mood. You know it's a Warren Haynes album, but it's different than anything he's put out before. Of course, the guys in Railroad Earth do a wonderful job of creating the musical textures that the albums calls for. I'm thinking and hoping that this album will be looked on as favorably as Tom Petty's Wildflowers in the decades to come. Heavily influenced by The Band, Steve Earle, Sam Bush, John Mellencamp, Folk music, and even The Doors on some songs.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2015If I were stranded on a desert island with only one artist's music, I would pick Warren Haynes, because of the diversity of musical genres he covers. His music spans and fuses multiple genres, from country, jazz, blues, r&b, rock, jam, reggae, and now with Ashes and Dust, folk and bluegrass. I found this cd absolutely refreshing!
If you are a hardcore rock fan thinking you're buying a Gov't Mule cd, you might be disappointed, as this has a very laid back contemporary bluegrass sound. However, if you're a Gov't Mule fan, and the song Railroad Boy from By A Thread left you with wanting more, you will love this cd. It has also made me want to experience more Railroad Earth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wunderschöne Musik auf sehr hohem Niveau!!!!!
Diese sind meinem Erachten nach „Is It Me Or You“, „Spots Of Time” und “Coal Tattoo”.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr Haynes does it again
Mr Haynes does it again. there's little that hasn't already been said here.
But this recording inspired me to write a review...my only one after 47 years of listening and watching.
He's proved to us all his competency in being a guitarist and band leader and key musician over the years..aka Gov't Mule & the Allman's is unquestionably of a very high caliber.
But this recording brings to those that didn't realise just how versatile he is.
With what is basically bluegrass music you can't hide behind e-lec-tricity [as Bo Diddley used to say].
That's the beauty of this recording in that it is nearly all acoustic and the playing is superb , by all the musicians.
Very heart warming music,. I should be encouraging Mr Haynes to come to England and play the "Cambridge Festival", he would be perfect with this material.
I don't expect there will be many releases of this style, so this one should be treasured and if you have just a general interest in Warren Haynes music, then take a listen to this. Both regular listeners and new listeners to Warren Hayne's music will be musically enriched by what you hear.
Oh yes..PS, get the set with the bonus CD, that gives you an even better insight as to Warren Haynes abilities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eccellente
