- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2023This was the album that I listened to that initially exposed me to the band. It’s interesting to see where the band is at today by comparison to where they were at during the time of it’s release especially when considering that it predates both the addition of Hunter Burgan and Jade Puget as full-fledged band members. It’s also the last album to feature Mark on guitar. Overall, I feel that this album really begins to set the tone for where the band will eventually take their artistic style. I also feel that it hallmarks the establishment of their unique identity from some of their other early punk influencers (e.g., The Vandals).
Something that really sticks out on this album while listening to it is just how quiet it is by comparison to some of their other albums (e.g., Black Sails in the Sunset). This could very well be attributed to a lack of a solid bass track, for the most part, as from what I can tell there are only a few bass solos in pretty much the entirety of the album (e.g., at the start of “The New Patron Saints and Angels”). This, again, could be attributed to a lack of a bass player although Hunter Burgan and others are credited with lending some bass playing in the album’s liner notes.
On a different topic, I placed this order with a third-party vendor (Deep Discount) and had it fulfilled by Amazon. I mention this for a few reasons including that the album showed up without any shrink wrap on over the jewel case. I thought that was a little unusual since Deep Discount claimed that I was getting the album new. Last I checked, it’s pretty typical for new CDs to come with shrink wrap over them but I don’t think that CDs are as popular now as they were back when this album came out. That being said, the CD showed up in excellent shape: it played just fine and I was able to rip it to my PC to back it up digitally. The jewel case was also in terrific shape which doesn’t always happen on orders like this that are placed through Amazon. Thus, the CD, jewel case, and liner notes all showed up with little to no discernable defects. I would have no problem giving this vendor a good review by virtue of that even if I thought that it was a little odd that I got a new album without any shrink wrap on it. Thanks for helping me get a copy of this album back! I am grateful to have it in my music collection again!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2021Item arrived in perfect condition and way faster than expected. This is the third AFI album in the discography and notably the first where you can see a bit of experimentation when compared to their first two albums. Highly recommend this album to anyone who is curious in exploring AFI's roots. This is definitely the heaviest and most aggressive album that AFI has released to date. Thanks for a quick and easy transaction would recommend this seller to anyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2014smooth transaction. I love afi, and I have all the albums, but I have them put away. I needed another one that i could listen to.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2013Each AFI album is an unique experience. This album goes back into more of their punk roots, but does have some inkling of a sound change.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2006My God, I love this CD. I love AFI's punk stuff in general, but this has to be my favorite album by them. It's loud, fast, agressive, and pissed off! Everything a punk rock album should be. The lyrics are also very well written, and they're almost poetic. Not quite. AFI really started getting poetic with 'Black Sails in the Sunset', which is this band's second best. Anyway, the best songs on here would definately be 'Today's Lesson', 'The Devil Loves You', 'pH Low', 'Lower Your Head And Take It In The Body', 'Three Second Notice', and 'Third Season'. Definately reccomended to ALL punk rock fans. New scene-emo AFI fans, you probably won't like this at all. Haha.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2015One of my favorite AFI albums. I loved this phase of their musical evolution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Consigliato

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding Their Stride 3 Albums In
AFI's first two albums were great hardcore punk records in their own right but it wasn't until this album that they started to form their trademark sound and gothish lyrics. This would be the beginnings of what would later appear on Black Sails and Art Of Drowning. A brilliant record with catchy melodic songs showing a band finding new found rigour.
