18 1/2 DISGUISES: A Romantic Comedy Mystery Novel (Maizie Albright Star Detective Book 7) Kindle Edition
Fans of romantic comedy mysteries, like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum and Meg Cabot's Size 12 series, grab this seventh book in The Wall Street Journal bestselling series and learn why Maizie Albright’s cases are “raucous and addictive reads” full of “twists, turns, romantic tension, humor, and fast quips!” Kings River Life Magazine's Favorite Books of 2021.
“A mixture of adventure, mystery, and romcom. So like Hollywood, you'll never figure out what is real and what is make-believe until you reach the end.” — Laura’s Interests
#DisguisedDetectiving Maizie Albright might have once played a (teenage) private investigator on TV, but she’s now living the part. Her (mother’s) name is on her business cards. Her (boss’s) appointment book is brimming with new clients. And her bank account has grown large enough to finally trade in her childhood dirt bike for an actual new (pre-owned) vehicle.
And then there’s Wyatt Nash. Love of her life. Future father of her…
Hey, now...
And then there's Wyatt Nash. Future partner in her business. Because currently, Nash is working for her father. Not for the private investigation business that's waiting for Nash to get out of the red so he and Maizie can get on with…
Just what, Maizie isn’t so sure. But she is sure about one thing. She’s ready to take on her own cases. To prove she’s more than just a (washed-up actress) assistant private eye. So when Maizie finds her costume designer friend killed during a masquerade gala, it’s the opportunity Maizie hoped she’d never get. An investigation into an old friend’s murder. But one that’s also put her new friend in jeopardy.
While the police begin their inquiries, Maizie starts her own case. She’s needling Black Pine’s wealthy do-gooders, threading through lies, stitching together clues, and ripping out false leads. Her investigation may cost Maizie her job, her relationships, and her life. But by unspooling the truth, Maizie’s darned if they stop her from catching a killer who’s sew evil, it’s shear madness.
"There are twists and turns in the action, conflict between characters, secrets, and surprises. For fans of Maizie Albright, this will not disappoint.” — Author Christa Nardi, Christa Reads and Writes
“I highly recommend this series and definitely start with Book One, you won't be sorry! Well-written characters and a great mystery. I cannot wait to see what happens next!” — Miss W Book Reviews
"Hashtagged chapter headings and Maizie’s admittedly shaky investigative skills keep the humor at all-time high levels, especially as she realizes just how in over her head she may be. It is her late-in-adulthood maturity and dedication to her new profession that has her ultimately uncovering the truth.” — Cynthia Chow, King’s River Life Magazine
"Maize is a fun character that is on the ball trying to figure out and navigate investigations. She's growing. This series has been fun and I am looking forward to the next one.” — My Reading Journey"This series is always good for a little suspense; plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing and this installment doesn't disappoint." — Samantha, Cozy Tea Cottage

- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2021“I’m wondering if I’m really cut out for this PI business. Or if I’m just trying to show everyone I’m more than a has-been actress. That I can actually do something other than pretending to be someone else.”
This seems to be the theme of the book. Maizie is struggling to find her footing with her career and with her private life.
The book starts with Maizie and Rhonda finding the body of Maizie’s former costume designer who has recently settled in Black Pine. As the bodies pile up, Maizie questions her decision to become a private investigator…was it just a whim? The mystery is a really good one and had me guessing until the very end. There are enough characters to make it interesting, but not too many to make it confusing. The character, Annie, is introduced to us as Maizie’s new boss and mentor in her new office, having begun working for Vicky.
While the mystery is fantastic, the parallel story is engrossing and perfectly woven. Maizie really wants to prove her worth as an independent private investigator, but in true Maizie fashion, she ends up trying to be an Annie-Nash mashup character as she tries to navigate through investigating the crime. This is certainly a more mature, serious (but not too) installment than previous outings, but it still has the comic elements that make Maizie and Nash so endearing (see Billy, the convertible).
While reading, many questions were rolling around in my brain:
Will Maizie spend one too many lunches and late-night phone calls with Ian?
Will Rhonda and Tiffany ever speak to her again?
Will Maizie ever find out why Nash is so preoccupied and where he has been every night?
Why does Maizie seem to hate the bed and new curtains in the office, and what’s her issue with the camo tie?
Is Maizie more like her mother than she realizes? [gasp!]
Who killed Lucky?
Will Nash lose not only his business, but also Maizie?
I received an ARC and got nothing done around the house until the story was told, Maizie and Nash being my secret obsession. This was the best installment so far, and that is saying a lot! Cannot wait until 19 is written!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2021Maizie is working at Albright Security Solutions, which her mother owns, to complete her internship to become a licensed PI. She’s tired of being an assistant PI and wants to work on a case by herself to prove she during a masquerade gala. She starts her own investigation that not only puts her own life in danger, but also has what it takes. She gets that opportunity when her friend Lorena, a famous costume designer, is killed her friend Rhonda. During investigating, Maizie makes some mistakes that could jeopardize her relationships, her job and put her life on the line. Follow along with Maizie as she uncovers the clues, deciphers lies, and catches a killer.
This was fantastic; the best one yet I think. The rivalry between Nash and Ian was interesting and funny. I hope there is more of that in future books. I was hoping there would be some kind of a triangle between the three. I like how Maizie is growing as a PI and I enjoy the developing intimacy between her and Nash. I also enjoyed the family interaction between her dad, Remi and Maizie. I can't wait to read what happens next.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 202118 1/2 Disguises is a intriguing and hilarious foray into the complex world and even more complex, or is that confused, mind of ex-teen star Maizie Albright as she struggles to find herself in her seriously changed circumstances. Not only is she no longer an actress, her life as a private investigator in training has shifted with Nash's switch from private investigator to corporate security. While it is great that their romance can finally blossom, nothing feels right to her.
Maizie does not value the she has been living the life of a wealth and notoriety and she wants to prove to herself that she does have value without the trappings of her past and without making the mistakes of the past.
Maizie is stumbling as she works to find her personal detective mojo independent from Nash who has been forced to give up his security business. She takes on her first solo case, off the books but don't tell her mother/boss, when a personal friend is murdered. It is vital to Maizie not only to discover who killed her friend but to stand for the woman who helped her through her tough teen years and prove that the famous costumer isn't the person of low integrity that people are saying she is.
I really enjoyed the book but it did get bogged down a bit in Maizie's internal struggles; even Maizie recognized that. Yes, that kind of tongue in cheek humor runs throughout the book along with true wit, slapstick scenes, a few adorable-children chuckles, and downright belly laughs.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 202318 1/2 DISGUISES is another winner in the Maizie Albright series. It has great humor, lots of action, sweet romance, and a complex murder mystery to solve! Rhonda and Tiffany are hilarious sidekicks, too. Keep these books coming, please!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2021Loved this book. Maizie still has a lot to learn but is trying to learn from her mistakes. Her instincts are good and in the end she gets to the bottom of things and solves the murder of her friend Lorenza. Nash is always there for Maizie , knowing her very well, and their relationship is maturing and I look forward to next book to see how they are progressing. In this book, oddly enough her mother Vicky is a lot better than her so called friends—immature and self involved non-empathetic Tiffany and Rhonda. They could not care less if Maizie who has such a good heart gets killed, maimed, is upset or loses her job. Worst friends ever. I am hoping she can find people who actually care about her to befriend at some point. And Ian is such a misogynist jerk. Love Remi, her sister, and like that her father really seems to care about Maizie. Can’t wait for the next Maizie and Nash adventure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of twists and turns
I enjoyed this instalment of the Maizie Albright series. There are always a lot of twists and turns in her stories. I didn’t figure it out until Maizie told us who the killer was. I like the characters and was a little sceptical to read when Larissa revealed in her newsletter that it wouldn’t be an easy book for Maizie and Nash (I really like them!). I did enjoy all of Maizie’s exploits but at the end I was left thinking about why I didn’t figure out who the killer was. Were there not enough clues, or was that good writing? Should we be able to figure out the mystery with clues in the story or is it better writing if we don’t? Not sure if I have the answer. I am looking forwards to the next instalment though.
