NUMBER ONE BESTSELLING CRIME THRILLER
An Internet stalker turned serial killer...
Jake Lassiter follows clues from Miami to London...
And gets framed for murder himself.
"Catch me if you can." The lipsticked message on the bathroom mirror evokes the bloody history of Jack the Ripper. Jake Lassiter is on the case.

Next, consider CHEATER'S GAME: "One of the best legal thrillers of the year." - Best Thrillers.com
Here's the setup: Jake Lassiter tackles the college admissions scandal, and somebody is going to take a hit. Suffering brain damage from his days as a football player, Lassiter says goodbye to the courtroom...until his nephew Kip desperately needs his help. Kip has been working with millionaire Max Ringle in a shady scheme to help rich, entitled kids gain admission to elite universities. The mastermind of the fraud, Ringle cops a plea to save his own hide and shifts the blame to Kip who’s charged with multiple federal crimes. Dr. Melissa Gold, a famed neurologist, supervises experimental treatments intended to keep the ailing lawyer strong enough for a grueling trial. As a fiery showdown looms with Ringle, Lassiter risks everything – including his own life – to keep his nephew out of prison.
BUM DEAL, BUM LUCK, AND BUM RAP WOW READERS AND CRITICS
In BUM DEAL, Lassiter switches sides and prosecutes a surgeon accused of killing his wife. It's an impossible case with no forensic evidence, no witness, and no body. Even worse: Lassiter's symptoms of C.T.E., the fatal brain disease from his football days, are growing more severe. Upon publication, BUM DEAL soared to Number One on Amazon's "legal thriller" bestseller list.
"A drop-everything, read-it-now book for me - and this one has Solomon & Lord too. BUM DEAL is fantastic.” – Lee Child, #1 Bestselling Author of the “Jack Reacher” series
“BUM DEAL is the real deal. Jake Lassiter at his smart-talking, fast-thinking best. A funny, compelling and canny courtroom thriller.” — Scott Turow, #1 New York Times bestselling author
“Fascinating, fully developed characters and smart, well-paced dialogue keep the pages turning. Levine manipulates the expectations of the reader as skillfully as Jake manipulates the expectations of the jury” — Publishers Weekly (★starred review★)
Thirteen of Levine's novels have hit Number One bestseller status on Amazon in their genres, and in June 2015, he was the Number One bestselling author on Amazon Kindle.
Now available in paperback, ebook and audio: BUM LUCK. Here's what Oline H. Cogdill in the Sun-Sentinel had to say: "Paul Levine continues his trademark brisk pacing with timely storytelling and well-placed humor. Lassiter, Solomon and Lord make an unstoppable team — concerned about the law but even more about people."
And this, from Bookreporter: "BUM LUCK is a one-sit, must-read novel full of memorable characters and unforgettable vignettes Put BUM LUCK at the top of your spring reading list.”
Levine is best known for two series of legal thrillers: "Jake Lassiter" and "Solomon vs. Lord." The international bestseller BUM RAP brings together the protagonists of both series in an explosive murder case set on glitzy South Beach.
BUM RAP was a Number One bestseller out of six million books in the Amazon Kindle Store. The setup: Lassiter has had it with sleazy clients, shifty prosecutors, and a legal system out of whack. He's about to hang up his shingle when Victoria Lord calls. Solomon has been arrested for murder. What's worse: the only person who can clear him has disappeared. Now it's up to Lassiter and Lord to track down the witness--a stunning Bar girl--before she's roped in by the feds...or eliminated by the Russian mob.
"The pages fly by and the laughs keep coming in this irresistible South Florida crime romp. A delicious mix of thriller and comic crime caper." - Booklist (★starred review★)
Levine's first novel, TO SPEAK FOR THE DEAD, introduced the world to Jake Lassiter, an NFL linebacker turned hard-nosed lawyer. Lassiter has been described by Booklist as "one of the most entertaining series characters in contemporary crime fiction."
Levine's other series features squabbling lawyers - and lovers - Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord, who duel in and out of court. The Chicago Sun-Times praised "Solomon vs. Lord" as "remarkably fresh and original with characters you can't help loving and sparkling dialogue that echoes the Hepburn-Tracy screwball comedies. A hilarious, touching and entertaining twist on the legal thriller."
Levine has won the John D. MacDonald fiction award and has been nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe Award, the Macavity, the International Thriller Writers Award, the Shamus Award, and the James Thurber Humor Prize. A graduate of Penn State and the University of Miami School of Law, he was a trial lawyer before becoming a full-time novelist. He divides his time between Santa Barbara, CA and Miami, FL.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2024What a book..omg!! I don't know where this guy gets his ideas for his books but this one is a humdinger. Each time I thoughts I got this, there was another curve ball. I live the old coroner, he's one wise man and I hope he stays in more books. I never give up a plot, that's for you to read...and read you must because this book is fantastic. Now for #3.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2012I am reviewing this 2nd in series also today... I finished the first two books within a couple days (I read fast).
This one does start out a bit slow. It took me quite a few chapters of reading before I really got hooked so if this is your first Lassiter book, keep going, you won't be sorry. Once this story gets going it is full of action and suspense. A bit different story line than his first book "To Speak for the Dead" but still very good. In the writing style of Harlan Coben, this novel brings you along having you wonder how many hats Lassiter actually wears. He seems to be a "Jack of all trades" when it comes to law and order. His insatiable need to know truth continues to get him in trouble but also makes him the most caring lawyer when it comes to his clients. In this one he is obsessed about secrets from the past and what relevance they have to the present. A dating website and a serial killer or not? Lots of secrets in this one and keeps you reeled in trying to figure them out as you read. Full of surprises.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2018This is the second book in the series and the second book (of Levine's) that I I have read. First, I must say that I really enjoy this author's sense of humor. At times I laugh out loud while reading some of his lines. The lead character, Jake Lassiter, is very quick witted and reminds me of Hawk-eye Pierce from the Mash Sitcom (in sense of humor only). He just sees things through a funny perspective and always has a quick, witty comeback to offer someone who neither asked for his opinion nor appreciates hearing it.
He is a handsome, ex-NFL Linebacker who is now a defense lawyer. Needless to say, he has no problem getting women. In both books 1 and 2, he has been a guest in someone's house and has simply laid down for an afternoon nap, only to be awakened by a beautiful woman who seduces him. I need to figure out where these Bed and Breakfasts exist. :) Keeping the women, though, is clearly not his strong suit.
He also has a propensity to get into fist fights. I think I counted about 6 times in this book where he was either punching someone, or getting attacked by someone. So he is basically an oversexed, ex-jock lawyer, who constantly gets into violent skirmishes while trying to figure out who the murderer is and build a case at the same time.
In book one, he was a defense lawyer. In book two, he is assigned to be not only the prosecutor but the head of a police investigation. This was the first unbelievable thing about this book. Defense lawyers are never approached by the State's Attorney and assigned to be head of an investigation and lead prosecutor. But that is what happened to good old Jake in this one. He apparently works for a law firm, but they barely even mention that, as if it's a part time hobby. A place he checks his mail and says hi to the secretary every now and then. Another stretch. He seems to just do whatever he thinks will help his case, whether it's legal or not, and it all seems to work out in the end.
So, if you like an action-packed legal thriller that bends all the rules of law and likelihood, these books are entertaining. The writing is funny and engaging. The main character is like a Bruce Willis type lawyer, ex-jock who does whatever it takes to crack a case, and is so damn attractive that he gets laid taking naps. The plot is ever-twisting and keeps you interested and the endings are fairly satisfying.
Overall, an enjoyable read. I'll probably be reading the next one soon. I didn't review book one, but I would probably give that one 4 stars. It was a bit better than this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2013Night Vision is the second book in Paul Levine's Jake Lassiter series, although it is the fourth one I have read (the others being "To Speak for the Dead", "RipTide" and "Mortal Sin"). For me, this one is the best so far.
The plot centres round an internet sex chat room, in which various users end up dead. Due to a conflict of interest, the attorney general appoints Jake as a special prosecutor. In adopting this premise, Levine gives himself a large latitude for character creation in the long list of suspects Lassiter has to work through. Boy, does Levine use this to good effect! The English literature lecturer, whose an old washed wannabe stage actor with a liver polluted by alcohol, who uses the internet name "Passion Prince" and has a penchant for poetry, is my favourite.
But the plot goes so much deeper that in the other Lassiter books. There are shades of Harlan Coben here, as the attorney-general's past Vietnam war record ripples through to the present as he prepares his launch for the governorship. The love interest is provided by an English psychiatrist who has her own issues. Jake's never been good with finding the right women, although he's fantastic at working his way through a string of wrong ones. A nutty English psychiatrist is perfect Lassiter fodder. Then there's the weaving of a heavy dose of English poetry into the plot lines of the sex chat exchange, which gives this a richer feel than the other Lassiter novels.
And amongst all of this is Jake Lassiter, fast growing to rival Mickey Haller (given to us by Michael Connelly) as the best-protagonist in legal-thrillerdom at the moment. Lassiter pretends to be a great lump of an ex-athlete, but he's as much at home in understanding the meaning of theatre plays, as he is in taking hits and dishing them out. This is what makes him a deep and complex character. Making him prosecutor, allows the reader to see Jake's anti-authoritarian side come to the fore as he wrestles with the hints of political corruption from the inside.
Really enjoyed this one. Another great end-product from Mr Levine. Onwards to the next in the Lassiter series.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2023This is a confusing story in that it is not clear if Jake is trying to be a defense lawyer, a prosecutor, a detective of just an ex pro athlete failing as relationships and his job. Most of the characters are unlikable, the story has strange tangents that come across as forced scenes but the ending pulls it all together. Overall, this is a mystery and not much of a legal thriller but has interesting moments.

Jake is my kind of guy - an irreverent sense of humour, a larrikin, but focused on getting results. This one was a bit heavy in places, but with good twists near the end, and a satisfying finish. Death on the bridge was a particularly visual experience.
