2016 release. Jeff Buckley's first recording sessions in 1993 in NYC were largely an informal exercise to acclimate the 27-year-old with a recording studio. Recently discovered in the Sony Music archives during the research for the 20th anniversary edition of Buckley's Grace album, the performances on You And I are a revelation, an intimate portrait of the artist performing a variety of cover songs and original music expressing a range of emotion channeled through his singular sensibility. These intimate, raw and spirited sessions mark Buckley's first time recording versions of electric cover songs such as Bob Dylan's "Just Like A Woman," Sly & The Family Stone's "Everyday People," and Led Zeppelin's "Night Flight" and a previously unissued track, "Dream of You And I". Long rumored to exist, as the "Addabbo sessions", but previously unheard outside the studio, these seminal recordings are a fan's Holy Grail, a rare

Was lucky enough to share a beer with this genius as he blew the doors off the Cleveland agora ballroom before Julianna Hatfield took the stage. This album is melodic, preparatory in arrangement prep for Grace. We are all so fortunate to have this collection. The quality and engineering is inspired. I hope they will discover more!!!

An unusual look at a performer that many of us came to know only after he was gone. That said, I can't say it's of the caliber of Grace". Certainly Hallelujah is a cover that would be terribly difficult to eclipse, but no individual song here comes close.
Buy it because Buckley was a talented guy and it's hard to imagine too large a collection from such a short career. Just don't expect it to be his best.

Many of Jeff's uniquely introspective sensitive guitar intros are on this CD. The transcription recording quality is excellent, and conveys a real
sense of Jeff's presence. Jeff never played a song as a repetitious canned performance; every time he appeared or recorded it was always
an act that created anew the essence of the music, as is reflected on this recording . Listening to this is truly a beautiful, if somewhat sad/bittersweet emotional experience for those of us who truly miss Jeff. I feel no need to pointlessly describe individual tracks, music must be listened to-not spoken about-and you will need to listen to and enjoy these
I know of no musician as merged with his guitar or who has so consistently intertwined his guitar with his unbelievable vocal range, nuance, and sensitivity.
This is a timeless, welcome and worthwhile recording.

This is a wonderful collection of covers performed by Jeff Buckley ( plus one or two originals) . I love the selection of songs and his brilliance of guitar playing and singing truly makes this a must have for all Jeff Buckley fans. It is sad that he died so young. He had so much more to offer. I am grateful this volume of work was released.

This is Jeff Buckley. If you like his version of hallelujah and Grace, then this is for you. Stripped down, acoustic demos. If he wouldn't have passed on, he will be a major important artist right now, God knows best.

Definitely leftovers. Taints his memory a bit. But worth hearing as archival pages from his aural sketchpad.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true genius at play. So natural - and oh so missed!

Prised from the Sony vaults, we are given yet more raw Jeff Buckley finding his groove. The magic that materialised during those legendary sessions in 1993, is an eclectic mix of covers, hitting on every genre - including two originals, one being the sublime Buckley/Lucas penned 'Grace'.
It's starts with a moving rendition of Bob Dylan's 'Just Like A Women', turning the song into 6.28 minutes of intense musical joy - and what a way to start!
The style changes, but the vibe continues, with an almost doo-wop version of 'Everyday People', followed by the blues driven 'Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin' - proof, that Jeff had the ability to tackle all genre's with ease.
It's always an immense pleasure hearing yet another take on 'Grace', this fantastic version is "raw to the bone" classic Buckley. The perfect vocal/guitar combination, taking his vocal ability to breathtaking levels.
It doesn't stop there. Jeff's stunning vocals, never falter / never miss a beat, on the divine 'Calling You'. His voice rises, soars and swoops, a voice of true utter perfection.
It's understandable that the main focus on any of the recordings is his extraordinary voice, vocals that were truly a gift from the gods - though, throughout this collection, both voice and guitar, should move you, in equal measure.
'Dream Of You And I' is more narrative - than song, and a track that emerges as 'You And I' on Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk. It's another fascinating aspect on how Jeff's thought process worked - in relation to how his music formed. It's about what prompted the song to be composed - as in this case, he heard the song in a dream. It starts with the most beautiful of acoustic tones, where Jeff sings just: "you and I, you and I, all for you". Then tells a tale of heartache within the dream, as more gorgeous acoustics notes, accompany the story.
Of the others , two songs by The Smiths, 'The Boy With A Thorn In His Side' and 'I know It's Over' are the surprise of this collective, but we should never be surprised by what was on Jeff's musical radar. Would've loved Jeff to have worked his magic on: 'Meat is Murder', 'Still ill' or 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' - to name, but a few?
Jeff then slips and slides on a obscure blues number, Bukka White's - 'Poor Boy Long Way From Home' - to be followed by a seriously ballsy cover of Led Zeppelin's 'Night Flight'. His voice takes off to almost stratospheric levels, with mercury popping/off the scale screams, as he mimics Robert Plant's vocal mannerisms. Stunning!
It's not the first time Jeff has mimicked the Led Zep sound. Listen to his blinding - sped up ("45rpm thing") version of 'Kashmir' on Live A L'Olympia. You have to hear it, to believe it.
Sadly, it finishes all too soon, with a perfect 'I Know It's over', taking this beautiful song to a beautiful place, where Jeff's voice - so complements Morrissey's lyrical charm.
This is a ultra powerful collection of songs, focusing on an immensely important period in Jeff's musical career - a career that was picking up serious pace - and yes, we've heard similar songs on different recordings, but no matter how many times you hear the same song, they all have their own individual identity.
The lack of content - only ten songs, is probably my only disappointment. I just hope there is more in the Jeff Buckley treasure trove?
