- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2014I have loved Warpaint since they debuted their EP and have been lucky enough to see them perform live several times. They are by far one of my favorite bands of all time, and there is truly no other artist that I think sounds similar to them. Always etheral and with such haunting melodies.
Having only listened to this album once, my first impression is the difference from their first 2 efforts. Yes they still have the same haunting melodies, but Jenny's bass and Stella's drumming are more synchronized and make for a much more cohesive sound than their previous efforts. I'm not sure if that is actually a good or bad thing yet, because the love I have for their previous sound. I also wish that their vocals weren't mixed in so low and overlayed, because these girls really do have some chops, and I don't think feel they let them shine on this album. Though it is a familiar sound for them, there were moments and songs on their previous efforts that showcased their vocals more than this album does.
All in all I will continue to listen and see what gems I find in the process. I could never give Warpaint less than 5 starts and an I love it!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2014Warpaint make me feel like I'm a part of their jam session. I have yet to see them live but listening to this album makes me feel like I'm in a intimate setting with them. Warpaint, through each track, make me feel as though I'm hearing a song being created and then developed and then concluded and that this has happened right before me.
Alluring, without pretense.. Inspired, without fear.. Driven, but at a comfortable pace.
I can't feel as though any song Warpaint makes has a finish or a start. It has just been something that has happened along the way.
I am blown away by this band but in no way am I in a hurry to exhaust my ears of them either. I will instead appreciate their music with patience till I can get as great a vacuum I can afford to listen to them(probably my truck), perhaps late in the quiet evening.
I have bought Exquisite Corpse and The Fool and enjoy them almost equally. I also love that each album/ep has it's own flow and feel.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2018Probably their best album to date. Jenny Lee is becoming a master on her big Rickenbacker bass while Stella keeps time on the drum kit. Stella is really incredible. She is quickly asserting herself as one of the foremost drummers in indie right now. She's worked with Kurt Vile, Courtney Barnett and others. I put her up there with Bryce Devendorf of the National. Syncopated beats and rhythms are right on point. Of course Theresa is lovely and talented and Love is to Die is my fav. Emily sings like an angel and has a style and flair of guitar playing all her own.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2014First off I am going to say that this band is amazing live! They bring you into their music and their sound and I encourage anyone who is a fan of their music to go see them live if you get the chance.
I can honestly say that this album after the first few listens was good but not great-there was definitely three songs that I really enjoyed but the rest of the cd I just wasn't feeling it but then.........It got in my head and after having it play in my car for almost two full weeks I didn't want to take it out. I really really like it! I think that there first album is a little catchier but this album really gets into your head and stays there.
I have to agree with someone else on here who said stick with this and give it several listens. I thought the album was just okay after a few listens but then I thought it was very good and really enjoy it. I would probably rate it an 8 out of 10 while I give there first cd a 9 out of 10.
Warpaint fans and just fans of melodic, moody and original rock will find this an interesting listen. I am really curious as to where these girls will go next with their third album.
Worth a purchase and several listens!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2014* its velvety, warm production — especially the bass and drums — thumbs up for producer Flood
* Warpaint's hypnotic, swelling compositions and melodic invention
* great drum and bass playing and parts — hypnotic countermelody, but bouncy and poppy when it has to be
* more selective, sparse arrangements compared to the previous album
* I don't like synthesizers, but they're so warm ("Drive") and playful ("Hi") on this record, that they won me over.
"Biggy" is the standout track for me. It builds a very mysterious vibe beautifully around an ominous riff. Love it when the bass picks up and runs with it. The chanting voices comes on like softly flashing lights in the dark. It's simple and brilliant.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2014If you haven't heard Warpaint yet and you're an Altrock fan, give them a listen. Their self-titled second album creeps quiescently into your consciousness. With a sound harkening to their cross-town L.A. rivals Silversun Pick-ups, Warpaint is (obviously) influenced by Nine Inch Nails while featuring ethereal vocals that remind me of, but stay on the palatable side, of Bjork. My top track is "Disco//very" with "Keep It Healthy" and "Biggy" rounding out the top of the 12 tracks. I'm listening to Warpaint's 2010 album, "The Fool," as I write ya'll... it's a good album too, but not as strong as their eponymous 2014 offering. "Warpaint" is definitely a recommended buy.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2022Warpaint is highly underrated!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2014Warpaint begins with a mistake and an apology. It's a modest way to open such a beautiful, slow and hypnotic album. Like Faith No More's 1992 masterpiece, Angel Dust, only one or two songs contain a clearly defined chorus. This album isn't for everybody. But if you're not completely cynical and don't think music should only go certain places and do specific things (as Pitchfork's dim-witted review reveals about them), you might find yourself lost in its magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eargasms abound
Great album and it sounds fantastic on vinyl. It really just fills the room but SIDE B or C had noticeable clicking or popping throughout. I'll try giving it a clean but I doubt it'll fix it because others have complained about the same issue. I'd also rather have bonus tracks on side D rather than having an etching but it's otherwise a beautiful release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is this Warpaint's best album?
I am afraid this may be rather a long review. The album starts with Intro, a cool understated instrumental with an effective false start. It carries on almost seamlessly into Keep It Healthy which contains Warpaint's typical use of oblique, but memorable lyrics, which may well have specific meanings, but allow you to pause and think and come up with your own ideas, while listening to gorgeous melodies and inventive musical ideas. Love is to Die comes next, 'Love is to die, love is to not die, love is to dance, love is to dance...' words which themselves are susceptible to many interpretations. Don't worry, I'm not going to go track by track right the way through, they are all at least good. I must mention Disco//Very though, which is just as it says and so much more, full of wonderful musical ideas and words and other vocal embellishments, and is as eminently danceable as you would expect. To me, many of the lyrics have an undercurrent of gentle menace, hardly surprising from a band whose first major release was entitled Exquisite Corpse.
With most artists that have been my favourites over the years including Free, Mott the Hoople, Richard Thompson, Neil Young, the Cure, Placebo, Elbow, Moulettes and others it is possible to pick out a favourite album. Is this Warpaint's best album? Well maybe, but is possible to make an equally strong case for The Fool and their latest offering Heads Up. As others have noted Warpaint are indeed also great live, and most of these songs (all?) can be found on various great YouTube videos. It is still very much worth owning this, and all other Warpaint albums on CD though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love is to die
深い。warpaintのwarpaintらしいいちばん良さが表れているアルバム。
intro からラストsonまでどっぷり大音量で浸れる。このアルバムは全体的にテレサのvoが多いですが音の重みや深さにかなりマッチしてる。
Love is to die 、Hi、biggy、Disco 、feeling alright 、CC、Son 、どの曲も名曲。
何度も何度聴いても吸い込まれる。
