About the author
Once upon a time, Romy dreamed of one day living inside one of the fairy tales in her head. But she grew up in Durban, South Africa – not exactly the sort of place where fairy tale princesses grow up. With the help of a great many fairy godmothers, the slaying of a few dragons (but not nearly enough pretty glass shoes), Romy's own fairy tale came true, and she now lives her dream as a multi-published author and writing coach. For the cherry on the top, her Hollywood romance, Not a Fairy Tale, was a 2016 finalist for the Romance Writers of America® RITA Award.
Though Romy's heart lies in Europe, she doesn't cope well with the cold, so she lives in sunny South Africa, in the City of Gold, Johannesburg, where she is mom to two teens chasing their own happy ever afters, and a pet dragon called Rori (okay, he's a bearded dragon, but that still counts!)
She writes contemporary fairy tale romances and short 1920s historical romances.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 April 2015Cocktail waitress, Phoenix, wakes up one morning with no recollection of where she is, or the last 36 hours. And she isn't alone, there is man, and she has a ring on her finger. Turns out they got married the night before, in Vegas, and she can't remember who he is and all she wants is a divorce.
However the man, Max, has other ideas. He, despite the short time he's know Phoenix, is in love with her, and his family has a grand tradition of never getting a divorce. He appears to be wealthy vintner, at a vineyard in Napa, but he has another life too.
Will Phoenix and Max come to an agreement, or will Phoenix get her way and get divorced? Regardless you know you are in for an enjoyable time finding out.
I loved how Max was continually trying his hardest to get his wife to fall in love with him, and that he really didn't mind showing off his wealth as a way to entice her, until her memory of their wedding day returned.
The plot of Waking up in Vegas may seem a bit unlikely, however the book is designed to be a fairy tale for adults and it does that very well. It is a very romantic story, and I fell a bit in love with Max while reading this.
There is a surprising amount of depth to this book, touching on topics such was family responsibilities and fear of commitment. There are a few steamy scenes, and the story really appealed to me.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 October 2013Waking up in Vegas is a delightful romantic Cinderella style fairytale with a contemporary edge. The fairytale theme isn't apparent at the beginning but once revealed the story becomes a charming read full of humour, romance and angst.
Phoenix at first glance appears the antithesis of Cinderella. She is forceful, streetwise and cynical. Her father like Cinderella's is a man who loses his way when his soul mate dies, his emotional withdrawal coupled with a nomadic lifestyle unsuited to a teenage girl scar Phoenix and make her distrust the life and love Max is offering.
Max is sexy, handsome and arrogant but as his secret's are revealed he is also a romantic, idealistic loyal man who accepts his duty without complaint.
The plot has many 21st century twists and conflicts for Max and Phoenix to overcome before they enjoy their timeless happy ever after.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 December 2013This pretty much a cinderella type story, but it starts with her waking up married in Vegas with no memory of the day before.
I loved Max and his confidence of who he was and of his destiny. I liked Phoenix but it took her ages to get her memory back and was a little annoying at times.
I liked that Max was always there for her, he was the strong one, willing to do anything to keep them together forever.
Phoenix has a fun warm nature that brings people out, a remnant of having to make friends quickly as she was on the road a lot with her parents.
As a pair they compliment each other perfectly and give the story a new twist of happiness.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 August 2013There is no way in this world that Phoenix Montgomery is going to get tied down! She's her own woman, she has plans and none of them involve waking up in a stranger's hotel suite with a wedding ring on her finger. But that's exactly what happens!
It's a brilliant start to a fairytale romance that will have you believing in love at first sight...with the help of champagne!
What I really liked about this book was it could have gone down so many predictable roads but it certainly didn't. Without giving anything away, the hero Max is sexy, wild, honourable and dutiful all at the same time. Phoenix is crazy and irresponsible on the outside but underneath that tough surface lies a heart crying out for someone genuine in her life.
From Vegas to Europe, you will get totally caught up in the story and be cheering by the end!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 August 2015I first discovered Romy Sommer's Westerwald series during #HIFortnight when I read The Trouble with Mojitos. At the time I didn't realise it was actually book two (is there anything more frustrating than reading a book out of sequence?!) but as it happened it didn't matter too much as the books can be enjoyed as stand alone reads.
Waking up in Vegas shares the story of Phoenix and Max, an unlikely couple who wake up in bed together following a wild night out. Phoenix soon realises this stranger is her new husband and she's horrified. She doesn't want commitment- least of all to someone she doesn't know! Max, however is smitten and believes he's found 'the one'. The story revolves around the couple finding out more about each other, uncovering secrets along the way.
Phoenix is a strong-willed heroine and I really liked that about her, even though I times I wanted to shake her for trying to fight her feelings. And Max...well, he was the perfect hero- deliciously hot, sensitive and determined to fight for the true love he's convinced he's found.
This book had me laughing, cringing and wishing for the happily ever after. A beautifully written contemporary love story with a hint of mystery, Waking up in Vegas is perfect for dreamy romantics everywhere. I've currently only got these books on kindle, but I desperately need to get my hands on paperback copies to sit on my shelf alongside my other favourite books.
It's fair to say the Westerwald series has stolen my heart.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 January 2014I gave this story five stars because purely and simply I fell in love with the hero. What's not to love about Max? Not only is he gorgeous and successful, and pays attention to detail, but he can fix your kitchen taps.
The story is a little bit different in the fact that the heroine is the one who doesn't want to be 'tied down' to a relationship, whereas Max knows Phoenix is his destiny. He's just got to convince her that he's hers.
We wake up in Vegas, but this story gives us a fairytale ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Writing
I just didn't like the female lead all that much. Also, enough with modernizing Cinderella stories. I'm so done with them! But maybe give this one a chance anyway, because the author can write well. I'm just sated with this genre, I suppose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy escapism
I picked up "Waking up in Vegas" when I had a few moments to relax. Little did I know I would be immediately drawn into someone else's life in the first few pages. I read for hours, had to fetch not one but two cushions for my numb buttocks and take headache tablets due to not moving my neck for so long! The visitors got fish fingers for dinner as I did not go shopping and I excused myself from conversation that evening to finish my story in bed. This story enables you to relax and allow yourself to be absorbed without the fear of a nasty turn around the corner, but is fast moving and interesting (descriptions paint an easy mind picture for you of faraway and modern day places) so as to keep you completely involved. When I finished at 1 am I could turn around and have a happy sleep, with the feeling that the last few hours spent reading this book had been well spent precious 'me time' and truly time off from normal life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy fun read
Very fun predictable Cinderella style romance-story. Great easy heartwarming read, fun characters and interesting setting. No major surprises here. Word

5.0 out of 5 stars A fairy tale indeed!
No matter your age, every woman imagines the fairy tale. I spent a delightful few hours reading this lovely story. I am not a fan of romance fiction, but this was splendid, fast paced and joyful. The heroine has a mind of her own and is not some submissive damsel waiting to be swept off her feet - thank goodness! Waking up in Vegas had me laughing, shedding a tear or two and renewing my belief in love. Not bad for a cold winters afternoon read.
