"The best slow-burn romance I have ever read."—New York Times bestselling author, Penelope Ward

It was a hot summer day when I met him on the construction site next to my parents' house. Under the sweat and dirt, Manning Sutter was as handsome as the sun was bright. He was older, darker, experienced. I wore a smiley-face t-shirt and had never even been kissed. Yet we saw something in each other that would link us in ways that couldn't be broken...no matter how hard we tried.

I loved Manning before I knew the meaning of the word. I was too young, he said, but I would wait. Through all the carefully chosen words hiding what we knew to be true, his struggle to keep me innocent, and infinitely starry nights—I would wait. But I'd learn that no matter what you achieve in life, it means nothing if you suffer the heartbreak that comes with falling for someone you can never have. Because even though I saw Manning first...my older sister saw him next.

Don't miss this epic ride!
STUNNED.SHOCKED.EMOTIONAL…These are a few things I’m feeling right now after finishing Something in the Way over 24 hours ago. I’ve had to gather my thoughts because I’m not sure where to begin with what I want to say in order to do this story justice.First of all, Jessica did tell us this is Book 1 in an epic saga of forbidden love (her words). Using the word epic is an understatement. I knew there would be a cliffhanger, what I didn’t know is that Manning and Lake would still be consuming my thoughts the way they are. While I have enjoyed reading other books recently, Something in The Way is on a completely different level and has captivated me like no other.Lake is only 16 years old, but has fallen for an older man, Manning, who is 7 years older than her. It might be easy to dismiss this as some silly teenage crush, but this is anything but that. The friendship and attraction between the two builds and Manning realizes that a relationship with an older man is not good for either of them. Even so, he tells her “you make me smile, Lake. Nobody else does, how could I walk away from you?” If that is not swoonworthy, I don’t know what is.I have NEVER read a slow burn like this. This is the ultimate slow burn, forbidden love story. I truly feel all of the emotions of the characters; love, happiness, sadness, angst. That is what makes this story EPIC.I want to know what happens next, I need to know what happens next. There are SO many questions that need to be answered, it’s hard to believe we have to wait until May to see where this love story takes us. I’m guessing there will be more heartache and surprises, but Jessica has drawn me in and I will be coming back for more no matter how much it hurts. The cliffhanger will have you in tears and screaming at your book/Kindle. Even so, trust me when I say it is completely worth every minute. Dang, is it May yet?!?!

Something in the Way is the first book in the series of the same name, this is a series of 4 books spanning a couple’s journey with the ups, downs, and complications along the way. They aren’t even together during this book. 😅

“You can’t move the stars, Manning and I were inevitable.”

The story kicks off in 1993, Lake is 16 years old and lives with her parents and older sister Tiffany, who is 19 with no job or plans for her future. Lake has always been doted on by their parents, especially their father who expects so much from her academically and has pushing her since middle school to get into his college alma mater. He has big plans for Lake’s future and makes sure to let Tiffany know daily that she on the other hand hasn’t amounted to much. There is construction going on next door l and one day Lake meets Manning, one of the crew men. Lake is smitten immediately and feels a connection with Manning. He feels a pull towards Lake as well, not only does she remind him of his sister who passed away but he’s also just pulled to her and doesn’t like that he is. Manning is 23 and while Lake meets him first, it’s Tiffany who grabs his attention away. Manning is currently taking college classes for criminal justice and hopes to become a cop one day.

There is soo much angst in this one! It’s messy and a bit of a love triangle between the sisters and Manning. As the reader we know that Lake isn’t mature enough or even ready for a relationship with Manning, just like he knows it too, but at the same time there is an undeniable pull to being in one another’s lives. The 3 of them spend a lot of time together, they go to the fair together and end up all being chaperones at a summer camp. While this series is inevitably about Lake and Manning, you get to know Tiffany as well throughout the series. She gets pulled in to the mess and we get to see Manning and her become a couple instead. Manning sees through her insecurities and realizes Tiffany needs someone in her corner since their father makes it blatantly obvious Lake is his favorite. Tiffany brings Manning to family dinner, a bit to get a rise out of her father but slowly she starts to want Manning as well. And since Manning feels like he needs a reason to be in Lake’s life, he kind of goes along with it at first.

I just loved the angst and agony in this one between Lake and Manning, his explaining to her about the Summer Triangle constellation and star-crossed lovers. The growth of Lake’s character in this was so good and needed, the slow burn of the buildup, the cliffhanger ending!! This series makes for the perfect binge!

I enjoyed this story. It was recommended to me and I went into it completely blind. There was so much tension it kept me captivated. Tiffany…I don’t like you! Manning is one of the sweetest, most caring and understand MMC’s I’ve read. His life story is so sad and you just want to hug him and hold on.

Lake is of course a little naive…though she is 16. I felt like she should know some of the answers to questions she asked but she’s also the nerdy, school oriented girl without much like experience. Her sister certainly makes up for that.

I did enjoy how the author portrayed each character. As much as you want to dislike Tiffany you kind of feel sorry for her at times. She brings a lot of it on herself. I have this feeling I really won’t like her in the next few books.

4 stars for plot and character development. I definitely missed the spice but I get it!

Welcome back to the 90s, before the widespread use of email, texts and social media. Lake is 16 and in high school, with all the potential in the world for success with her father's grooming and getting accepted by USC is a high priority. Her older sister, Tiffany, is not quite as ambitious, but she's a definite attention seeker who lives by her own rules. The moment that Lake meets Manning, it's obvious that he's not like the other construction workers whom he works with, and the immediate connection isn't like this illuminating spark, but rather, a quietly lit flame that doesn't go unnoticed by either of them. I was instantly attached to both Lake and Manning and loved reading through both of their voices. Lake exudes this innocence and positivity while being intelligent, cautious and obedient. She has her own opinions, but she balances them with her actions, usually careful not to rock the boat because Tiffany does that quite a bit as it is. Manning is the type of hero who is burdened and scarred by his past, but his heart is complete gold. He is very protective of Lake in the most endearing way and is the type of guy who thinks before he speaks. Tiffany is a rather transparent character through the eyes of Lake and Manning. While I wasn't her biggest fan, Jessica Hawkins does a fantastic job of giving her layers, too, where underneath the superficial is a girl who needs to be loved for herself and not pushed away because of what she can't achieve. The delicate balance between Lake and Manning was very well done, they are well aware of their age difference and obstacles associated with it. The dialogue really highlights the personalities of all of the characters and certain scenes give so many strong feels of angst, tension, wistfulness, hard reality and the unfairness of life. And that ending! Because what do you do when you find the one you are meant to be with early in life and it's just not your time to be together yet for so many reasons? I can already tell that this series is going to put me through the wringer, but I welcome it because the writing is brilliant and the characters are so vivid. This will definitely be a top favorite series.

Jessica has put together a story filled with so much angst, an intense slow burn and such amazing chemistry that this book was unputdownable. Lake and Manning will ruin you in every way possible! I loved this story, and I can’t wait to continue on in the series!

    .
Lake was my favorite throughout the book, she wore her heart on her sleeve and went for what she believed in. Constantly living as a shadow to her beautiful, outgoing older sister Tiffany, Lake at 16 years old never gets noticed, she’s the smart, quiet one, but one day when she notices her lost bracelet she goes outside to look for it and there she meets Manning, the beautiful, tall, 23 year old construction worker next door, he has her bracelet and give its back to her but not before she’s so intrigued by him that she starts up a conversation with him and immediately the two of them form such a strong connection you can feel it through the pages, then her sister shows up and once again steals the spotlight.

    .
Manning was such a beautiful and tortured man, he knew being around Lake and considering her a friend was inappropriate he’s 7 years older then her but he can’t deny being around Lake is a breath of fresh air with her innocence and beauty, the best way to ensure he can spend time with Lake is if he also has a friendship with Tiffany her sister and though he doesn’t really care for her he must do anything to continue being in Lakes life one way or another.

The first book in Something in the Way series introduces us to the story of Lake and Manning.
    .
    .
Lake is a secluded 16 year old with no experience in life other than with books or studying, in complete contrast to her older sister Tiffany, who goes out with boys, drinks, doesn’t appear to have many aspirations in life, or any responsibilities set upon her. Therefore, the expectations of a bright future for the Kaplan family is a burden Lake carries on her shoulders alone, the reason why she isn’t like most kids her age.
    .
    .
One day, when Tiffany forgets to pick Lake up from summer school, walking back home she meets a fascinating older stranger that sparks a funny feeling never experienced by her before. They meet, talk and connect, but none of that really matters because, even though she saw Manning first, her sister saw him next.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate heart-wrenching and amazing slow-burn. I loved it!

I can’t stop thinking about this series. It’s been days and I can tell I’ll be thinking about it for the next few months. Absolutely amazing. The past few weeks, I’ve been stuck in a ‘book slump’. I couldn’t finish anything until this series where I read one book per day…which I kind of regret now but it’s over so soon.

Lake - she’s just great. Always knew what she wanted and I was rooting for her non-stop. One of my favourite female main characters.
Manning - oh lord…he frustrated me to no end but I absolutely loved him. Strong, alpha but a sweetheart as well. I usually like ‘bad guys’ as the main character (the ones who rarely smile and can be bad to others) so I was really surprised to like him so much.

Other characters like Tiffany and the Dad did my absolute head in. I constantly put my kindle down but picked it back up again straight away just to calm down. Throwing it across the room was tempting but I loved their characters as well purely because I did dislike their actions so much. (Well written)

I love the main couple. The story was paced nicely in my opinion. I did get irritated a few times because I just wanted things to happen straight away but that would defeat the purpose of the title. Didn’t get bored at all so not too much detail but enough to create an image in my head. Any book that can make me feel so much emotion is a 5/5 in my eyes.

Definitely will be reading this series again.
    You should too.
