Editorial Reviews

Deluxe two CD edition includes a bonus CD that contains non-album and live tracks. 2012 album from the Australian Indie/Alt-Rock band. Prisoner has an enormous and often cinematic sound. Comparisons between front woman Hayley Mary's performances and those of Kate Bush, Karen O and Florence Welch are not without warrant.

This Australian quartet brimming with talent jokingly describes themselves as "intensindie" but that is actually a good starting point to describe this music that is so hard to describe. They are an indie artist but I usually think of much more of a raw and unrefined sound with an indie artist. The production here is extremely powerful and polished. The singing is very intense and beautiful; and the drumming is unexpectedly strong and dominant. The music also has a very dreamlike quality to it as if the instruments are all blurring together to form a surreal soundscape. The vocals also have a slight reverb applied most of the time, and there is a full time piano/keyboardist which adds a lot to the `dreamy' sound. I might be crazy, but I also hear a very slight tinge of a country influence both in the music and the vocals. Normally this would be a red-light for me, as I can't stand the genre, but it is actually fresh and welcoming here. With all this I would describe the band as sort of a dream-pop/indie rock hybrid with a sliver of country influence and maybe even some progressive rock/alternative rock influences as well.

The vocalist, Hayley Mary has an absolutely gorgeous, powerful and ranged voice. She has a very unique sound to her voice and totally completes the band's sound. I'm not sure if a male vocalist would match this type of music as well. Hayley's genuine and uninhibited style really shines through, not sounding like a showoff at all like some pop artists of today. Sometimes I can recognize and even accept that a vocalist isn't so great and still enjoy the music, but boy is it nice when both the music and vocals are completely sublime, as they are here. This band really has great musicianship, as I can't really pinpoint my favorite instrumentalist. They all work so amazingly well together and all contribute to that very full and flourishing sound. The drumming is definitely more noticeable than the average rock band (not that I would generalize Jezabels to simply a rock band) but maybe that's a good example of what drumming should sound like.

The lyrics here are more like a story than line-by-line, verse-chorus-verse lyrics. Each song is a new paragraph in the booklet (for those of you who still buy physical CDs). The parts in the songs that could be choruses actually sometimes have different lyrics to them. To me, this is another interesting and unique characteristic of this band. I'm not sure if this is a concept album or anything, but it seems like it could be.

"Long Highway" is one of the most breathtaking songs I have heard in a while. It starts out with a somewhat calm but heartfelt verse, slowly blooming into a warmer, majestic, carefree song with one of the most emotional vocal performances on the album. "City Girl" and "Endless Summer" are two of my other favorite tracks, perhaps being the most catchy and upbeat ones here. The more I listen, the more favorites I find such as "Trycolour," "Horsehead" and the acoustic strumming undertone of "Deep Wide Ocean" mixing in some folk influences. There are a few ambient "breather" tracks (like "Reprise," "Peace of Mind" and "Austerlitz") in between some of the more intense/upbeat ones. By the way, "intense" certainly doesn't equate to "heavy" by any means whatsoever. I would not describe this album as "heavy," but I wouldn't exactly describe it as "soft" either. See, we're getting back to this tough to describe thing.

I had to dig deep for a downside to this album, but it doesn't quite have the variation it could have. There are a few melodies that may even make you think "didn't I hear that already?" so, make sure you really love the sound before buying. Still, the overall sound is so good, I don't consider this much of a weakness and it still by far gets 5 stars. If I was rating this as a percentage, it would still be around a 95.

I really am brimming with anticipation for more from this band, and hope they can grow and become discovered by many more. They really deserve all the attention they get. Meanwhile, I know this album will always be a special part of my collection.

I was drawn in by the lure of the free 'Endless Summer' track. So many bands these days are very one-dimensional and lack depth, I was wondering whether this would be another 'almost' album- you know, the ones where it sounds good in the previews, only to later find out afterwards you wasted your money. Not so with this album. I am not a music junky, I don't follow all the latest bands and pop charts, but I believe I know how to appreciate good music. Well, this is not good music- it's great music. This band is wildly talented and within their songs I hear the remnants of so many great voices, so many favorite bands, all composed with such great beats to blend it all together. This is what music should be, and it's refreshing to see such unique and original talent in world where music has become far too commercialized, drowning out legitimate bands and artists. Those on the fence about this album can rest assured, this is genuinely great music. I have not listened to an album all the way through for years until this one came along.

I had to buy this (CD) after stumbling across this band on LiveFM, and buying all 3 of their EPs. This certainly does not disappoint! I would agree with the previous reviews (and I'm not much of a reviewer anyway :)

The only downside that I can tell is the recording quality is still a bit odd (but consistent with the EPs. Also, there is about a 1-2 second gap between a few of the tracks (which were meant to flow into one another). Maybe I just got a bad CD? I can probably fix these in Audacity.

These minor nits are not nearly enough to impact my enjoyment of the Jezebels. They are an incredibly fresh band, and things seem to just be getting better as far as the material with each release!

EDIT: Not sure why this says it is from an MP3 download, as I bought the CD...

Late at night I was awakened by an amazing song. I had to back up the show to find out who the group was. Immediately I grabbed my Kindle Fire and searched for the "The Jezabels" I was so amazed to hear everything they have put out. The vocalist reminds me of Martha Davis of the 'Motels', Teri Nunn of 'Berlin's and 'Kate Bush' and 'The Cowboy Junkies, if you mix all their voices and musicality out comes an amazing songstress and band. The drums are messmerizing group together. I love the lyrics to the music they read like a personal journey. I hope to hear from them for a long time to come.

So I've only just discovered these guys, but I'm greedily listening to everything I can find. This band is addictive! Truly, if you can listen to "City Girl" and not be hooked... well, the genre just isn't for you. That being said, most of the album is incredible and it's hard to be disappointed with these guys... they're sort of like taking Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees... mixing in a bit of the Edge from U2... hmmm... and maybe just a bit of Concrete Blonde... modernizing the whole mixture and adding an epic drum line... yea, I think that might describe them =)

Best new alternative rock album I have heard in decades! I purchased the album for "Peace of Mind," which I first heard on the Netflix television series, "The Killing." But, the entire album is awesome. This album will be on my playlist for the rest of my life! Absolutely awesome with "Prisoner" and "Peace of Mind" being my favorites.

This is a great album! It's a cross between Siouxie and the Banshees and the Cranberries with the kick of wanting to hear it again and again....Purchase it....you won't be disappointed!!

After their first three LP albums Prisoner makes for a fantastic album debut. I saw them live at the Canadian Music Fest a few years ago and fell in love with them. This album is very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars redundant
Reviewed in Germany on April 6, 2012
