Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes (Rose Gardner Mystery, Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 39,459 ratings

The first book of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling series!

It all started when I saw myself dead.

For Rose Gardner, working at the DMV on a Friday afternoon is bad even before she sees a vision of herself dead. She’s had plenty of visions, usually boring ones like someone’s toilet’s overflowed, but she’s never seen one of herself before. When her overbearing momma winds up murdered on her sofa instead, two things are certain: There isn't enough hydrogen peroxide in the state of Arkansas to get that stain out, and Rose is the prime suspect.

Rose realizes she’s wasted twenty-four years of living and makes a list on the back of a Wal-Mart receipt: twenty-eight things she wants to accomplish before her vision comes true. She’s well on her way with the help of her next-door neighbor Joe, who has no trouble teaching Rose the rules of drinking, but won’t help with number fifteen-- do more with a man. Joe’s new to town, but it doesn’t take a vision for Rose to realize he’s got plenty of secrets of his own.

Somebody thinks Rose has something they want and they’ll do anything to get it. Her house is broken into, someone else she knows is murdered, and suddenly, dying a virgin in the Fenton County jail isn’t her biggest worry after all.

From getting cable TV and drinking a glass of wine to doing “more” with a man, Rose is well on her way to committing a good number of the seven deadly sins, with the help of her hot and mysterious neighbor Joe. Joe is new to town, and it doesn’t take a vision for Rose to realize he’s got plenty of dangerous secrets of his own.

Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes.

My new favorite series!
First I have to say that I love Rose. The Rose Gardner books might be my favorite books ever! This is the start of Rose's story. It is an exciting mystery with a side of romance. Rose starts out so sheltered. And when her mama dies she is finally set free. She does a lot of growing in this first book and she is a new person by the end. More of the person she wants to be.This book is highly entertaining and enjoyable. The characters are amazing and so funny!

This book was a great read and once you get started, it really is hard to put down. Even with a toddler in the house I somehow managed to read it in about two days.

I was attracted to the book by the blurb, it seemed quirky enough that I would like, and I saw there was an overbearing mother in the picture. Having one myself I was interested. I have to say that the character of 'Momma' and the affect she has on her children seems very authentic. I could understand why Rose, the daughter that stayed behind to care for the cruel mother, was the way she was, and why her sister 'the one who got away' was the way she was too. I liked how the dynamic plays out later in the book between the sisters and found them particularly engaging.

The characters are very real. None of them 100% perfect all of the time. Sometimes they infuriate you or make you slap her head, while in the next scene make you giddy, or a little teary.

The book is often witty and Rose's take on situations are sometimes laugh out loud funny. There are some twists and many secrets revealed throughout the book. Some more unexpected than others, but once revealed, you definitely feel an 'ah-ha' moment. The scenes are described beautifully, never with more description than needed, which is just what I like. I've been known to only glaze over overly descriptive passages in most of the books I read, so this was a definite plus for me.

I'd recommend the book to anyone who likes a coming of age story, murder mystery, or a romance. Rose a great heroine who is stronger than she thinks right from the beginning. It'll be interesting to see with her new found confidence where the next book in the series will take her.

When I started Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes, the first in the Rose Gardner Mystery series, I had doubts whether I'd like it. Some of the reviews I'd seen criticized the main character, Rose, for being simple minded and that the story was too unbelievable. For me, it was more the simple mindedness that had me worried. Unbelievable? It's about a girl who has visions and is filed under the "Fiction" label. I think that allows for a little farfetchedness.

The first few pages didn't do much to dispel my fears. Rose is the definition of meek. She's nice, polite, and her most offensive expletive is "crappy doodles." She's 24 years old and, when she's not working at her mindless job at the DMV, she's at the beck and call of her religious mother (who is downright abusive and tells Rose she's possessed by the devil because she gets "visions"). While Rose doesn't like her situation, she seemed apathetic to changing it.

If the story continued that way for too long, I wouldn't be saying this: I really liked Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes. Despite the uncertainty in the first few pages, Grover Swank didn't waste any time allowing Rose to bloom (pun fun).

While at work, Rose gets a vision of herself lying dead on her sofa and faints. Faced with (potentially) her death, she realizes she's never really lived. She stands up to her demanding mother and storms out of the house to cool off. Before she returns, she takes out a Wal*Mart receipt and begins to make a list of things she wants to do before she dies. Commit all the deadly sins in one week, fly in a plane, dance in the rain, visit Italy, drink a beer (is it shocking that the item that made me wince was that she'd never drank a beer?).

When she returns home, she realizes she'll have more time than she thought to check off items on the list. Her vision sort ofcame true, except instead of Rose being on the couch it was her mother.

Unfortunately, gossip spreads fast and the fact that Rose had fought with her mother right before her mother was murdered hasn't gone unnoticed - especially not by the old busybody across the street and the small-town police officers. Not only is Rose a suspect, but it becomes clear the murderer is still after her.

Rose must do her best to keep out of jail and stay alive. After all, she has a list to finish.

Obviously, there's the standard "Woman gets accused of murder. Real killer pursues woman. Police are corrupt/unmotivated. Woman must solve crime to save her life" crime element that is present in so many novels in this genre, but in this circumstance it seemed to serve mostly as a vehicle for Rose's development. And that was a good thing, because Rose really grew on me (I swear that pun was accidental).

Her home life may have kept her naïve and down trodden, but Rose wasn't stupid. Socially awkward? Yes. But that just made her more endearing. It made you want to cheer for Rose - not just to solve the mystery but to experience life. When she got a makeover and purchased some new clothes, I was excited for her. Rose felt like a truly good person and she deserved to feel good about herself!

So much of my enjoyment of this book came from Rose checking things off her list. For example, her sitting on the porch with Joe and discovering beer for the first time (and, the next morning, discovering that beer wasn't her new best friend). Oh, and buying the scandalous nighty at Wal*Mart (which didn't sound all that scandalous)...too funny.

Of course, you can't review one of these books without mentioning the "love interest." Even though I've been loving the hell out of these books (they're a fun way to wrap up my "100 books a year" reading challenge), I'm not a big romance person. I know, I'm probably the only one who reads these kinds of books and feels that way, but I can usually tolerate it as long as it doesn't take over the plot.

I'm happy to say that, in this book, the romance was actually pretty tolerable. Probably because there wasn't a ton of it and, you know, with Rose so innocent and inexperienced, it wasn't going to go all 50 Shades of Grey. Joe was plenty mysterious, but, for the most part, I couldn't help feeling like he was a good guy. It was clear he wanted to keep Rose from getting hurt, but he never tried to make her decisions for her. In fact, he may have been one of the few people in her life that wasn't.

The ending itself wasn't all that shocking, but I barely noticed because of how it ended. Just when I thought Rose and her antics couldn't get any better, they did. I was laughing at one sentence and cheering at the next.

This maybe one of the best (if not top) feel good books I've read. I liked that.

Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes (Rose Gardner Mystery, Book 1) by [Swank, Denise Grover]This is another one of those books that is hard to put down. It is so much fun.

Rose Gardner works at the DMV. One Friday afternoon she sees a vision. In the vision she is dead. This is not unusual, having visions, but they are usually mundane everyday occurrences. this is the first one she has had of herself. Her mother, a person who never showed much love to Rose, is murdered. This leaves two problems: the blood stain and Rose is considered the victim.

With her vision and her status as being a suspect on her mind, Rose decides that she has wasted 24 years. So she makes a list of 28 things she wants to do before her vision comes true. Her neighbor, Joe, helps Rose with the list, except number fifteen - do more with a man. Soon, even though he is new in town, Rose realizes that he has secrets.

Rose has also discovered that someone thinks she has something that they want. They have threatened her, broken into her house, murders someone else, in other words they will do what they have to in order to get the item back again.

The cover pulled me into this book and I was hooked by the middle of the first chapter. The characters are well filled out. We find out about Rose's mom and how she has affected Rose's life. Every character shows imperfections which will make you want to scream at them at times, but if you keep reading the next sentence may make you smile again. The situations which Rose gets into are so hilarious. But there is also a mystery to solve throughout the book.

I feel like this is a fun read that many would enjoy, if you enjoy a cozy mystery this will be a nice additions, also.

I was given this book by the author, Denise Grover Swant, in exchange for my honest review.

I Loved this book, the plot, the characters, humor, suspense, and the romance. This is one of the best books I've read and enjoyed from beginning to end! This book certainly has it all and I could not put it down after I opened it. Thanks so much for a splendid read. My wish is that I could actually afford to purchase more in this series, and by this author. Wonderful time spent enjoying this book.

I couldn't put this book down. Denise Grover Swank is so amazing at keeping people in the dark, I found myself racing through the pages trying to find out who Rose could trust and who lied to her. I couldn't figure Joe out until the end. Suspenseful, funny, sweet and surprising!

The characters feel real. No one is purely black or white, apart from the onion fanatic (eww). Even though Rose starts out as a weak person, she sure soon shows her strength. She is a likable person and I found myself cheering for her.
    And Muffy was adorable.

Denise Grover Swank sure has a way with words.

Can't wait to read the second one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great start to the series, can't wait to read the rest!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 21, 2015
I really loved this book! As the story unfolded I grew so attached to Rose, I wanted her to stand up to everyone and she doesn't waste a single minute of her new found freedom. She turns into such a sexy, confident woman almost overnight and it's so great to see the real her finally break free. The visions she has are betrayed well, it can be easy to make it sound cheesy and corny but it just worked, it seemed almost natural!

The whole book had me captivated and I was desperate for Rose's innocence to be proven! Joe was a bit question mark for the majority of the book which is kind of great because it keeps you so engaged, I had theories galore! The list Rose makes is hilarious and sweet, so many things she wants to do that you just can't believe she's gone 24 years without! She gets a hell of a lot thrown at her in this book, and really, she handles it all brilliantly considering!

I did question her sister at times, Violet obviously cares deeply for Rose but at times I saw her mother come through, she was very abrupt about the changes Rose was making and some might agree that Rose changed a lot very quickly but I completely sided with her, she had 24 years being controlled and she finally got the chance to be herself so why waste a minute? Especially if you are suspected of murdering your mother and might be jailed at any point!

The big twist at the end took me by surprise, I might have just been caught up with the romance not to really think about it, but I literally couldn't put this book down! I stayed up until 2am reading it, woke up at 8am and finished it! There are loads more books in this series, which eventually I will get to. This book was free but the rest are about £2.50 each, not unreasonable but I know I'll need to read all the others and be skint before I know it! Ha!

I thoroughly recommend this book if you want some quirky, mystery with giggles and romance! Super endearing, super captivating.
