Product Description
Boy George, universally recognised as one of our generation's most iconic artists, is back with a thrilling new studio album of original material, his first in 18 years! 'This Is What I Do' is to be released on his own 'Very Me' Record Label via Kobalt Label Services on 28th October and will be supported by live dates in the UK.
'This Is What I Do' features a string of guest musicians including DJ Yoda, Kitty Durham (Kitty Daisy & Lewis), Ally McErlaine (Texas / Red Sky July), MC Spee (Dreadzone) and Nizar Al Issa, many of whom will perform as George's band on his live dates.
'This Is What I Do' was written by George and longtime writing partners John Themis, Kevan Frost and Richie Stevens (Soul II Soul, Tina Turner, Simply Red, Culture Club). Richie Stevens also produced the record at London's Cowshed Studios. The album also features writing collaborations with legendary producer Youth, and a version of Yoko Ono's Death Of Samantha. It was mixed by Dave Bascombe (Tears For Fears, Depeche Mode, Pendulum, Doves).
Says George: "I wanted to make a baggy album, not overproduced and I think I have achieved it. I was listening to things like 'Beast Of Burden' by The Stones' and I had my head most definitely in the 70s. Richie's approach was very organic and he's the best drummer in the country so the feel of the record was so locked in from the start. I worked with a bunch of musicians who I have toured with and written with for the past fifteen years and dragged in a handful of others to guest on certain tracks like bassist Jennifer Maidman, Ally McErlaine from Texas and Kitty Durham from Kitty Daisy & Lewis who came and played harmonica. I was also writing from a happy place. This time, no ex lovers to get revenge on. For me 'Bigger Than War' sums up the tone."
Boy George needs little introduction. With a career spanning over 30 years he first shot to international stardom in the 1980's as the front man of one of the UK's biggest exports - the Brit & Grammy Award winning Culture Club - and has had continued success as a solo artist. He has sold over 150 million records with top 10 hits in every country. Boy George is also a hugely respected house DJ, playing for twenty years, and continues to DJ successfully in clubs all over the world. However it is his new album, 'This Is What I Do', that reinforces his first true love, writing & singing.
Review
"With this album, one of pop's most shape-shifting careers enters a new phase. Boy George has a beard on the cover a dabble with conventional masculinity that's mischievously offset by discreet eye makeup and inside is a forceful reclamation of his musical reputation. Before the arrests and the 12-step groups, George's music was often freighted with solipsistic misery; here, on his first all-new studio album since 1995, he's got wisdom on his side. The opening track, King of Everything, apologises for having once thought "self-destruction was so cool" and wonders where he now stands with those he loves. It's a flowing orchestral number, huskily sung: a masterly introduction to the record. His deeper, richer voice has gravitas now when he maintains, on the countrified It's Easy, that he now leaves heartbreak to others, his burnished tones are utterly authoritative. Live Your Life's old-time reggae and anti-homophobia lyric are closer to his Culture Club beginnings, but he didn't sing this powerfully then. This Is What I Do is the comeback of the year." --Caroline Sullivan, The Guardian * * * *

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 October 2013Finally and after many Years - just like his female Alter Ego Grace Jones - Boy George released a new Album with new Material.
After several Dance Music Projects Releases with his DJ Partner Marc Vedo, Cover Versions of Lana del Reys "Video Games" and others and a Compilation of older Dance Material.
Instead of his Glam Rock and awesome Ballads Album "Cheapness & Beauty" this time his Music is mainly based on Reggae (Play Me, Feel the Vibration, My Star, Love and Danger, Live Your Life).
The "Boy" still knows very very well to create big Pop Melodies and his lyrics are self reflective and just wonderful.
"King of Everything" is a great Pop Song supported by a strong Melody and soulful Backgroundvocals.
"This is what I do" offers a wonderful rendition of Yoko Onos "Death of Samantha" sung with now a little darker and sometimes husky Vocals. "It s easy" is a great Midtempo Popsong drenched with some Country Sounds about the End of Love.
The New solo Album after a very long/too long time is a strong Pop Album with no Fillers and shows the wonderful Abilities of Singer and Songwriter Boy George. Hope the next Album will not take this long again.
And btw: Boy George and Grace Jones really should do a Song together.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 October 2013all I can say is that's its about time the music scene had a good shake up. as a person who loves music, the music scene has become extremely stale. on average I buy about one album a year now. and it has to be said this is without a shadow of a doubt my album of the year.
its so refreshing and relaxed, groovy beats, a couple of rock moments, clever (non sexual) lyrics. for a man who has experienced so much and shared it through his music, this album comes as no surprise. king of everything was played to death when I first downloaded and now I have the album. its on repeat all the time, at home, in the car.
my only wish is that it gets some airplay and recognised by all. the world deserves and needs it.
with no bad tracks on here, my highlights have to be:
king of everything
bigger than war
my god
its easy
my star
brilliant album George, looking forward to the tour now. also did anyone else notice in the sleeve a 'things to do' list? because on it, it had a song called blood sugar. any ideas if this is for the tour or possibly a deluxe version of the album?
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 October 2013It's obvious from reading the other reviews here that (in case you haven't all realised this already) music taste is very personal. Therefore reviews are really only that too - i.e. personal opinions. My verdict on this album, however, is that it is a stunning collection of tracks that just work so well together. Took me a few listens (quite a few, actually) to get fully into the album but now, four days later (I received the CD on Saturday morning ahead of it's official release date) I absolutely love it. There isn't a song on this that I don't like. Not sure I could pick out a favourite because they've all got something...It's Easy is an obvious candidate though, followed by Nice and Slow, but like I said, they've all got something and they're all fabulous.
This deserves to chart highly, and I really hope it does, but I kinda don't expect it will (looking forward to being proved wrong though!).
Buy it, and listen to it on big speakers, feel the warmth and sing along (and maybe even have a wee dance, if you feel like it). It's worth it!
Thanks George and team for this - we have been waiting a long time for it!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 October 2013This is a great comeback album from Boy George.
For so many years George has made it easy for all of us to forget that he is in fact an artist and a singer. From the very moment "This is what I do" kicks up with "King of everything" you feel that this album is George wanting to re-establish himself as an serious songwriter and singer. And he really succeeds.
Songs like "My god", "It's easy", "My star", "love and danger", "nice and slow" and the aforementioned (and brilliant first single) "King of everything" are stand out tracks and alone worth buying the album for. The rest of the songs are strong too - with only "feel the vibration" as an exception.
Georges voice is strong - but also different from his earlier days. More mature and rough- just like the whole album really feels more mature (not to confuse with boring). Only thing keeping the album from a straight 5-star review is that the production on some of the tracks are a little "muted" and that the running order of the album seems a little illogical with the strongest songs in the "middle" of the album (with the exception of opener "King of everything").
Lyrics are strong and you get the feeling that this is a really personal album - and an album where the artist wants to reconnect with his audience (e.g. check out "Any road" and "King of everything"). Listen to "It's easy", "King of everything" and "My star" - and if you like them, you will like the album.
After listening to "This is what I do" a couple of times you sit with the feeling that Boy George is here to stay, that he can pull more great albums out of his "hat" and that this is just the start. Listening to the album you realize that Boy George is a great songwriter, has a great voice and really still has a lot to offer to the music business. And during the album you reflect (e.g. "King of everything"), you get in a great mood (e.g. "my star"), you feel mellow (e.g. "it's easy") and you feel you are back in the good old days when music really mattered (e.g. "my god" and its fantastic psychedelic guitar solo).
In my mind there are no reasons for not checking this album out and see just how far Boy George has come. The album has my strongest recommendations.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Definite Must Have
if you are a fan of Boy George or Culture Club then you must get this. Sure his voice sounds older (but not old) yet it's still soulful and poetic. While some of the tracks have too much of a reggae vibe for my taste, it's overshadowed by the excellent vocals/lyrics. I remember watching an older Freddie Mercury interview where the interviewer asked him to comment on some of the artists who were coming onto the scene in the early eighties. Freddie mentioned Boy George and said that you can look at someone and just know they are going to be around for a while and Boy George would definitely be around a very long time. Freddie pretty much was right on the money, and Freddie is probably the best male vocalist rock music has ever seen, so his judgment is something to bank on. And hopefully Boy George will keep making music many many years to come. There are a lot of songs to love on this album. Stand outs are video Games, Any Road, Live your Life and the remake of the Dylan Classic Make You Feel My Love. I love Dylan as a songwriter just not as a vocalist so hearing Boy George's take on this song was welcome indeed. Also of note, anyone who knows me knows I hate digipaks I like keeping my cds safe and secure. And this one is in digipak but nicely put together. The booklet that comes with it seems professional and not just a last minute decision. It includes black and white pictures along with lyrics to all of the songs (including bonus tracks). The paper is glossy and seems like photo type/glossy paper. Definitely a nice touch.
