- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2011James Taylor is one of my favorites. This CD definately does not disappoint! He offers a wide range of songs, mostly written himself. Some of the others, like "My Romance" (by Rodgers and Hart) have his signature smoothness and ease. He gives them a personal touch. There are some old favorites like "Song for You Far Away" and "Only a Dream in Rio". I really like "Rio"- the beat and the whole story of a vacation cut short by an insurrection. He captures the dichotomy of the dreamy tropical vacation spot to a frightening escape from gunfire. He shows from his beginning to his captiviting end the difference of the "dream in Rio" to the reality of upheaval, of poor hungry children, of how what seemed so charming yesterday seems scary and sordid today. Another favorite is "Going Around One More Time". His lyrics and phrasing are captivating and I laugh every time I hear it. And who wouldn't love his twist at the end of "Turn Away". Let's not forget "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". I remember that song from years ago as a loud and rough western saga. James turns it into a story of good over evil, how bravery can win in the end. I wondered when I saw it on the label, but enjoy the way James put his own touch to it and made it a soft ballad. James, I'm glad you're here!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2018This is a second traveling copy of one of my favorite James Taylor albums - so I have Taylor time wherever I am. A great selection or songs and Taylor is in excellent voice. I highly recommend this album.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2011This is one of my all time favorites by James Taylor. I own about five other releases and this one is the best.
If your looking for classic James then this is the one to buy. Each song has been totally remastered to the ultimate sound qualtiy for anyone with easy-listening in mind. I would definately recommend this one for any one to add to his or her music library.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2014I had this as a cassette tape, then ordered the CD, it is now on my iPod. Timeless music that I absolutely love, James sings with a purity in his voice, relaxing even when he's singing about killing a pig, LOL
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2006James Taylor *loves* to play to live audiences. His recording "Dad Loves His Work" came out when he and Carly Simon were breaking up, at least partly over the fact that he spends so much time on the road (reflected in the title of the album). His 2-CD "Live" set conveys the energy he brings to the stage and the rapport he has with his audiences.
And performing is what the title cut boils down to -- after a couple of nice Tayloresque verses lead logically to the chorus (which is where the name of the song is), he starts singing to YOU. Yes, YOU, there, in the fourteenth row, or YOU, way back on the lawn seats at his outdoor venues. "Fortune and fame, what a curious game / Perfect strangers call you by name / Pay good money to hear "Fire and Rain" / again and again and again. / Some are like summer coming back every year / Got your baby, got your blanket, got your bucket of beer / I break into a grin from ear to ear / and suddenly it's perfectly clear / That's why I'm here". Yes indeed, that's why he's here. He absolutely loves what he does.
The title cut is the one that is worth the price of admission for me, in that he's explicity communicating with his listeners, enjoys it immensely, and all the positive energy comes thru. In "Only a Dream in Rio", he conveys his excitement and wonder from a visit to Brazil. With a chorus singing in Portuguese in the middle of the tune, he sings about having a remarkable experience there ("my heart came back alive"), and takes you along with him.
Songs from this CD which have become staples in his tours include "Everyday" (a sunny song about budding love), "Only One", a love song that, on tour, is largely sing by his backup singers, and the title cut. There's plenty to like here; this set of songs captures many of Taylor's moods, from the calming "Song For You Far Away" to the bouncy "Turn Away". It's a very good effort...however...
He's got one song which, for this listener, is just plain misguided. I am referring to "Mona", which is a song that starts out sounding like a generic love song, but the lyrics turn, and you find out that's Mona is a pig. (And has been dispatched and buried, the pig being "too damn old to eat".) It's humorous the first on the first couple of hearings ("seeing you as a little football by your mama's side"), but wears out its welcomes quickly. Knocking off one star just for this song.
Other than that, a solid selections of his marvelous handiwork.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2014Had the pleasure of attending a James Taylor concert in Costa Mesa, California when he sang the title song.....
"That's Why I'm Here" It was then, and still is most appropriate.
Keep up the great work J.T.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2019This is when he got his mojo back. Yay baby James.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2013Nothing much to add as the usual beautiful, tasteful production has been given, and the songs, especially the title song is just the way we would all like to believe we can live our lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ottimo prodotto ma poca attenzione ai particolari
Ho usato il prodotto per la raccolta di cd di James Taylor.
Il prodotto, però, non era sigillato con il cellophane e la custodia anteriore era graffiata.
In compenso, l'audio è perfetto.

5.0 out of 5 stars The very best of James
I like everything that James Taylor does, so it’s not difficult for me to love this album - in fact it’s one of his best in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taylor at his best?
Taylor's untrained, unassuming voice is wonderful. Background voices of Joni Mitchell, Crosby etc. make this album thoroughly enjoyable. The old Everly Bros song "Everyday" may be the best track.

5.0 out of 5 stars James Taylor That'S Why I'M Here
Genial, einfach klasse! Und seitdem höre ich ihn immer wieder sehr gern.

5.0 out of 5 stars 80
