Tarnished Cages: Sequel to Gilded Cages (Gilded Cages Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 305 ratings

“He could have everything here, and the price is so small. Why would he want to go back out into that cold, unforgiving world?”

It’s simple, really. Zay has a roof over his head, food in his stomach, no bills or jobs to worry about, and he gets to lie around all day. It should be the perfect life for him, and it would be… if it wasn’t for the fact that he has to play the role of a two-legged “puppy” for his captor and his captor’s little.

Zay’s unwillingness to accept his new life breeds doubt and discontent in Cammy, who’s longed for an end to his loneliness. Even though they should be bonding, the distance between them seems larger than ever. Cammy wants Zay to see how fortunate he is, but will it be Cammy who has his own revelations instead?

R. Phoenix (code name: Raissa) has an unhealthy fascination with contrasts: light and dark, humor and pain, heroes and villains, order and chaos. She believes love can corrupt, power can redeem and that the best of intentions can cast shadows while the worst can create light. She agrees with those who say that the truth is best told through fiction — even though fiction has to make sense while reality can be utterly baffling.

Her dark paranormal books explore a world where humanity has become prey, subjugated by “supes” — vampires, werewolves, and witches — who have seized control. They range from romance to dark erotica to horror and everything in between, exploring different aspects of the Fate of the Fallen universe. She’s even published something she calls “playful dark erotica.”

Her tendency to explore dark topics isn’t limited to a supernatural world. Her contemporary romance, Too Close, deals with the difficult topic of domestic violence. She is passionate about the need for greater awareness and understanding of an issue that’s often misunderstood.

She loves chatting with readers, though she often awkwardly rambles. No matter how much she tries to keep her bad and often perverted sense of humor in check, it seems to escape at the most inconvenient moments. (Thanks, universe.) Feel free to friend Raissa on Facebook and chat or send her an email!

I devoured this book in one sitting. It was an emotional roller-coaster of a sequel, and I was hanging onto every word for dear life.

We see our trio continue to grapple with the dynamic we're introduced to in Gilded Cages. Zay struggles to maintain his sense of self in the role "Master" has forced him into. He basically lives for three things--food (sometimes the kind that's intended for humans, sometimes not), the caress of the flogger, and most of all, Cammy--the beautiful, innocent man-boy who's argubly as much a victim as he is.

Cammy begins to question (slowly and softly) what sort of man Daddy really is if he's willing to subject Zay to such abuse.

We see the depth of Daddy's cruelty as he manuevers the two men who have come to depend on him. He simultaneously drives a wedge between his boys while forcing them together.

The love that Cammy and Zay have for each other is mixed with jealously and resentment. They don't become "bosom buddies" per se. There's a lot of heavy silence that passes between them, which makes complete sense considering the situation they're in. Somewhere along the way, they break through to each other. Is it enough?

    R. Phoenix depicts their bond in such a heart-wrenching, realistic way. She gives us a raw, honest depiction of two broken men (well, three actually), who find no quick fixes, no easy solutions.

Daddy's not your standard villain by any means. He loves Cammy fiercely, but it's a twisted love. He even has a certain fondness for Zay. Daddy's a man with a plan, and he's adept at adapting his tactics to control whatever happens under his roof.

This isn't a love story, but there's love there. And that just makes it darker. And...it's surprisingly sweet, if a story like this could ever be sweet.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go sleep off this book hangover...

I loved it. I love Cammy so much. He is such a beautiful character. I liked Zay too but Cammy is just amazing. I love him so much more and the other characters....well... I tolerate him as he was needed. It was such a great book. I liked the interaction between all of them. I also like how imposible was to guess what would come next for them. I did felt I liked the frist book better, and I think that was because of how new everything was. Now I kind of knew what to expect in terms of knowing the characters a little bit but they all had nice surprises to bring into the book. I had a wonderful time reading it. I couldn't read it fast enough.

This is the second book of the series and I really recommend to read them in order.

I loved this second part! It was as entrancing as the first one. And just as dark as well.

It is a twisted story. It is not really a romance and I'm not sure if it has a happy ending, though I loved every part of it.

It is a very intense book, so please read the warnings!

I’m crying. Crying big fat tears, at work! All because of this book. I didn’t think it was going to end like this. I never imagined it’ll end with Zay complying to this life. I thought for sure he would convince Cammy and they’ll run away and be free and they’ll be happy and Daddy would end up in jail with his sick shriveling away. But no, that is not what happened here. They broken, damaged, brainwashed. And I’m heartbroken. I hate it! I gave this book a 3 start because I was so invested in their future but they have no future! Not like this… I’m so so sad and I don’t know what to do with all this feelings…

I was really excited to find out what direction this sequel was going to go in, and I was not disappointed how the story unfolded. We get more into Zay and Cammy's head, seeing each one's turmoil at each of their situations. There were some ew moments (dog food!?), and some cringeworthy moments (poor Cammy feeling so lost and that he would never survive on his own), but every single one of those moments just kept me glued to the page.

In the end, the "family dynamics" change, hopefully for the better of all three, and I found myself really liking those changes, even if I would still encourage Zay to run for his life if he was able (and not being blackmailed to stay).

I also really liked the epilogue from Daddy/Master's POV. Hmmm... could there be more to this series? Maybe from his POV? Well, I'd definitely read it if there was!

I was happy there was a second book for this series. I needed more when I finished the first. This one was very good and moved the story along to where it needed to go to end. I’m still very curious about Master’s life outside of his house and the boys. He alluded to somethings at the end but it only piqued my curiosity more.

The first book in this series, Gilded Cages, was my first introduction to Daddy/little kink. It's not my thing, but that book was so good, I read this one. The psychological twists and turns in this story are crazy. I think I read this series with a pit in my stomach because of how I felt for the characters. But I had to know how it ended! I recommend this book of you want a dark trip. I highly enjoyed it. Not a traditional HEA, but the best one given the circumstances.

Even with his promotion to slave, I want Zay to run as fast as he can. I don't believe his life was so bad he can't go back. If he decides to go back, so be it. Cammy has made peace with his life. It would be nice to see daddy not always win.

4.0 out of 5 stars DNF at 68%

    ****Spoiler*****

DNF at 68% but not because I wasn't enjoying the book, even though it's sick and twisted. It was because Zay finally had a chance to be free and he didn't take it. It was all kinds of messed up, I didn't feel like he was completely brainwashed yet and I don't know the reason he didn't leave but honestly I don't want to know. I figure it's because he doesn't want to leave Cammy but Why not leave, bring the police, have the Master arrested and save Cammy that way? It's like I was rooting for him to staystrong as he was slowly being broken down and to see him not even try was disheartening.

I love Cammy and Zay, we get much more depth of character in this book, I get the sense that Raissa was more involved with them as she wrote. It's very emotional too and I can't decide whether the ending is HEA, HFN or really really bad! I'd love another sequel but maybe it's best left like this for the reader to decide.

Well what can I say book 1 absolutely wrecked me and I loved and hated it in equal measures.
Tarnished Cages had the same effect on me, I’m wrecked and both loved and hated this one but damn was it a fantastic read.
I sooo wanted more for Zay.
I couldn’t put it down and I really liked how it ended, there could easily be a third story if wanted but I also think it ends well for these characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Truly don't know what to write
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 26, 2024
    R. Phoenix definitely writes unique characters. The 'Master' always seems to be impulsive and unpredictable with an explosive temper.

The captive falls slowly deeper into the web, without even realising, uncertain where they stand.

Cammy is in an interesting position. Part of him knows that it's wrong, but he also realizes that, at this point, he wouldn't be able to survive on his own.

It is brilliantly written, if a little unfinished. Will there be a third book to tie their story?
