Editorial Reviews

Sonya Yoncheva has devoted her second solo album to the music of Handel, showing another facet of her wide-ranging repertoire. Being an alumna of William Christie's Le Jardin des Voix, the Baroque era formed her musical understanding at an early stage of her career, laying the foundation for her versatile and broad-reaching repertoire. Currently praised as "the best Traviata in the world at present" (Die Welt), Sonya Yoncheva is one of today's fastest rising opera stars. She is a regular guest at the world's leading opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House and Wiener Staatsoper. A great composer of vocal music, Handel based some of his most beautiful operas and oratorios on the enchanting sensibility of the feminine voice. His heroines are strong, independent women determining their own destiny - attributes Sonya relates to in all respects.

Beautiful, but it's not Handel
3 out of 5 stars
Beautiful, but it's not Handel
Sonya Yoncheva has a spectacularly beautiful voice, and her decision to record a Handel album must be commended, but it seems to me that her voice and interpretive decisions are perhaps more suited to Verdi than the Baroque repertory. Some of this undeniably lovely singing reminds me more of Rachmaninoff or even Villa-Lobos' vocalisations than Handel. For fans of miss Yoncheva, this is definitely recommended, but fans of Handel opera may be put off. The accompaniment is curiously smooth and plummy for this normally somewhat edgy orchestra, as if they decided to go along with Yoncheva's romantic interpretation of the music.

Extremely impressed by this very talented mezzo-soprano. Sonya Yoncheva's rich and deep voice is perfect for this selection of Baroque opera pieces by Handel and one by Purcell. All the Handel is beautiful, and her version of Dido's lament on this album is my favourite. A fine surprise of an album. The Verdi Album by her is also recommended.

Mrs. Yoncheva's quality of voice is fabulous, but even more is her interpretation and artistry which clearly transmit her self assurance in the mastery of her art. The instrumental accompaniment is complementary and supportive with its clarity and beautiful arrangement. I highly recommend this performance which along with the magnificent music of Handel has aura of both sensuality and otherworldliness.

This is a magnificent recording of the Met's biggest, fairly new, discovery! It's a worthy addition to any classical disc collection.

Gosh, this surpassed my expectations. Sonya lives up to her reputation; very musical renditions of these arias.

I agree with the previous reviewers who primarily praise the album for the musicality and the beauty of the voice, which is indeed exceptional. But I could only listen a little at a time due to what I perceived (rightly or wrongly) to be such a lack of any profound involvement with the texts. In fact, it took until the first Agrippina aria to feel a real enough connection with the aria to communicate anything to me. Handel is dangerous that way, but one has only to listen to a Hunt-Lieberson, DiDonato or Dessay to hear how much more the voice can do when willing to let go of its inherent beauty, take a risk with the text, and not be so careful just because it's Handel. So I regret to say that though there were moments, it didn't take but a few arias for me to be seriously bored. Since Yoncheva has all the equipment, I have every expectation she will be a true artist in the not too distant future but now, for me at least, I need more.

As the other reviewers have noted, her performance is sometimes raw. But what a talent!

Having enjoyed Sonya Yoncheva in the French and Italian repertoire, it is a great pleasure to report the enormous success of this Handel programme. She moves her voice through the intricacies of the music, with even tone, pin-point accuracy and dramatic awareness .Now on stage, please.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime !
