The Switch: the joyful and uplifting novel from the author of The Flatshare Kindle Edition
Pre-order the new epic romance from Beth O'Leary, SWEPT AWAY, now!
'SO CHARMING, SO SWEET AND SO LOVELY' MARIAN KEYES
Leena is too young to feel stuck.
Eileen is too old to start over.
Maybe it's time for The Switch...
Ordered to take a two-month sabbatical after blowing a big presentation at work, Leena escapes to her grandmother Eileen's house for some overdue rest. Newly single and about to turn eighty, Eileen would like a second chance at love. But her tiny Yorkshire village doesn't offer many eligible gentlemen.
So Leena proposes a solution: a two-month swap. Eileen can live in London and look for love, and Leena will look after everything in rural Yorkshire.
But with a rabble of unruly OAPs to contend with, as well as the annoyingly perfect - and distractingly handsome - local schoolteacher, Leena learns that switching lives isn't straightforward. Back in London, Eileen is a huge hit with her new neighbours, and with the online dating scene.
But is her perfect match nearer to home than she first thought?

"I am SO LOVING The Switch! It's so sweet and uplifting and SUCH a balm in these wretched times." --Marian Keyes, internationally bestselling author
"Reading this felt like checking in on old friends. A bright, life-affirming story with beautifully rich characters." -Abby Jimenez, bestselling author of The Friend Zone
"I loved it! It was a total joy to read. I loved the concept, the relationship between Eileen and Leena and the wonderful cast of friends both in London and Yorkshire. And it was such a breath of fresh air to read about a 79-year old woman dating (and even - hurrah! - having sex!) The exact kind of thing I believe we need to see more of in books and films. Eileen gives me great hope for the future! I shall be recommending it to my friends."

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 May 2021I absolutely adored The Flatshare, and I would go so far to say that The Switch was even better! I just love Beth O'Leary's style of writing, its gentle and very easy to read, whilst still managing to address some underlying issues facing society. The Switch made me laugh out loud in almost every one of its chapters. It's hilarious, heartwarming and genuinely moving.
A large part of the narrative addresses grief and how it can affect every aspect of your life. I loved the idea of the two Eileen's switching lives to help them both heal from the traumas of the past few years. I felt the way they were handling it was all very accurate. From reading the blurb, I was worried the plot would feel a little too farfetched, but I never felt like that whilst reading, it all felt very genuine and as though it could really happen.
The portrayal of life in Britain is just perfect, I feel like the book drips Britishness. I laughed constantly through Eileen's first days in London, because it's just so accurate. If you weren't born in London, it can be such a massive shock how people behave on a daily basis, and this was just captured so perfectly. Similarly life in little villages, and how minute details become huge parts of your life. The observational humour is brilliant!
Eileen was just wonderful to read, I thought she was absolutely fantastic. I loved her so much and I could read another 100 books from her perspective. Her brutal honesty and continued lust for life was inspiring and beautiful. Leena struggled to stand up against her grandmother, but I really enjoyed watching her grow and learn to love herself again. Her relationship with Jackson was dreamy, and I was rooting for them from pretty much the first appearance he made.
Not to be overshadowed by the leading ladies, there are so many amazing side characters to fall in love with. Fitz stood out to me, always willing to embrace Eileen and the older ladies into his life, the banter they shared was wonderful. I also adored pretty much every resident of Hamleigh-in-Harksdale, and if I could, I'd be packing up and moving there tomorrow. There are lots of themes explored with these fantastic people, loneliness, domestic violence, parental relationships and many more.
Beth O'Leary is rapidly cementing herself as one of my favourite authors, her books are a warm hug and a mug of hot chocolate on a chilly day, just perfection.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 October 2020After reading The Flatshare last year and loving it I was very excited to read this.
Once again Beth O’Leary has given us a book that feels like a warm hug with lovable characters, a great storyline and a nice heartwarming feeling to end with.
Although there is some domestic abuse to a side character and of course, the loss and grief of a family member, these situations are handled with care and I love how the small village is one big support centre for those who need it.
As for Leena and Eileen, I love them.
Eileen is the grandmother I think we all wish we had. She’s blunt and to the point and will stick her nose in when she needs to whether it’s wanted or not!
And Leena. My heart goes out to Leena. I know from experience the pain of losing a close family member and this book just shows how each person copes with it differently and how it’s something that never really goes away.
One other thing I really loved is Eileen’s lust for life and love at the grand age of 79!
The older generations don’t tend to get much rep in books, or none that I’ve read anyway, and I think it’s so great that Beth has written this beautiful story of love in the later years.
Such a lovely book!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 March 2021After reading The Flat Share last year I knew I wanted to read more by this author. The Switch is a wonderful story that revolves around Eileen and Leena Cotton, Grandmother and granddaughter. Both sort of stuck and wanting a change, so that is what they do. Eileen stays in London for a couple of months living in Leena's flat, while Leena lives in a small village in Yorkshire.
I adored this book right from the get-go. Eileen is an absolute hoot with her outlook on life, especially when she lives in London. Leena, in comparison, comes across as more reserved ut super organised. Both women have something in common, when they set their mind to something there is very little that will budge them from completing.
The author has described both of these women so well, on the outside they come across as strong, independent and resourceful. However, to those that really know them well, there are little cracks. Facing up to things and accepting how Leena's sister is no longer with them is a major thing for her to deal with.
Sometimes in life, you need to step away to see things clearer and to appreciate those around you. Keeping busy doesn't deal with problems, it masks them, buries them and they still need to be dealt with. This is very much a story of trying to find the courage to deal with problems and admitting to things that have gone on before.
Given the two very different locations, the author has done a wonderful job of presenting a sense of community, and this is down to the diverse and wonderful characters that she has created. From you to old, from shy to outspoken there is literally a wonderful cast that brings a good amount of humour and provides some truly heartwarming and also funny moments to this wonderful story.
This is a story I just loved everything about. Ideal for those who are looking for a story that you can escape into and come out the other side feeling great about. One I would definitely recommend.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 February 2025A really good read. Very funny and I love how grandma & granddaughter swapped lives and the fact that it goes to show that sometimes just cause your older doesn't mean your past it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible
I read this author's first book in my book club and at first wasn't sure if she'd be my cup of tea but wow was I wrong. She's an incredible author who creates realistic turn pager plots. Characters are well thought out and each have beautiful arcs even those secondary characters. And its a riot, funny and heartfelt. Please don't hesitate and read this book, you won't regret jt

5.0 out of 5 stars Uma delícia de leitura

5.0 out of 5 stars Had a great time reading this one!
This was my second book by the author and after reading and loving The Flatshare, I was kind of scared to read this one because I think I kind of had high expectations but rest assured because I had a great time reading this one.
It was a very fun but also an emotional read. I dived into this one thinking it will be a cute and fun read about two people swapping their lives, only for me to be pleasantly surprised that that wasn’t the only thing in this book. It talked about grief and the pain of losing a loved one and the struggles one faces after they’re gone. It also showed us how a community comes together and helps one another. The adventures Eileen went on and the tasks Leena had to do in Eileen’s place were so fun to read about. Lastly, the way Leena, Eileen and Marian took the courage to try and be a better version of themselves and the way this book ended was so inspiring to me. There were many parts in this book that I could relate to and it felt like my heart was healing together with the Cotton family and for that reason, it will always have a special place in my heart and will stay with me for a long time.
I’d definitely recommend this book if you’re looking for something similar like this but please make sure you check the TWs before diving into it💗
