The Sunny Side of the Alps: From Scotland to Slovenia on a Shoestring (Living in Slovenia Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 205 ratings

No. 1 Bestseller in Serbia & Slovenia Travel Guides, Eastern Europe Travel, and Travel Tips.

Tired of soggy Scottish summers and voracious biting insects, Roy and Justi seize the day and leave the Scottish Highlands for Slovenia with a carful of their belongings, their border collie and the dream of a new life. The trouble is, they have little money, vague prospects and have never been to Slovenia. Adventures and near-death experiences await them in the hot summers and snowy winters of the Julian Alps, but will their passion for the great outdoors be enough to transform their dream into a practical reality?

Perfect for fans of Chris Stewart, Victoria Twead and Beth Haslam.

When I was a child growing up in Liverpool, I sought out city parks and areas where small oases of nature still existed on the edge of the sprawling spread of suburbia. My adventures in these places occasionally led me into trouble, but for the most part, they did just the opposite.

I found an enchanting world of trees to climb, fields of grass as tall as myself, and fascinating creatures that inhabited the ponds that I sometimes fell in. The vertical walls of disused railway cuttings became the 'North Wall of the Eiger' and the first place that I tried to scale with a friend using a few meters of my Mum's borrowed washing line. A school trip to Snowdonia in North Wales confirmed my feelings that I was lost to the great outdoors. There were of course a few distractions along the way - girls, guitars, motorbikes and jobs - but it always came back to the hills and it still does.

I've been fortunate to 'live the dream' in the Scottish Highlands and in the Alps of Slovenia, and I am now living in a rural part of West Ireland with my wife, Justi, with whom I've shared many an outdoor adventure.

I hope my joy and enthusiasm for the outdoors is reflected in my writing, whether that is my guidebooks to Slovenia's beautiful mountains or my current series of memoirs.

With gentle kindness, Roy Clark tells of the sense of surprise he and his partner find in Slovenia.

Well written book about a little known country. Slovenia, Slovakia, it's confusing but this book sets you straight. The discription of the people, towns, cities, mountains and lakes is well done. Along with the authors point of view in the experience of living there .

Disclaimer: I am honored to call Roy and Justi friends and we have had many shared experiences in Slovenia. That said, this is a delightful book! My husband and I are reading it aloud to each other and giggling through each chapter. Roy has a beautiful ability to capture the essence of the experience with clear descriptions, unique perspectives and colorful stories while painting the joys and struggles of wading within a new culture while struggling with the language. If you like to travel, if you are interested in visiting Slovenia or if you just like a lovely read, The Sunny Side of the Alps is a fabulous choice. Enjoy! [I'm buying more to give as gifts]

Roy Clark, who coauthored three guides to hiking and trekking in Slovenia with Justi Carey, has written a more personal book about his and Justi's adventures pulling up stakes in Scotland and heading into the great unknown - Slovenia. Roy's sense of wonder and gratitude for his natural surroundings and his ear for the characters he and Justi (and their dog!) encounter put his book in the pantheon of Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals - a perfect pitch saga of a place and the people.

My search for books in English about Slovenia before taking a vacation there, landed me on Roy Clark’s The Sunny Side of the Alps. I read and enjoyed it twice, once before my trip and once after! It’s a nice, easy flowing journey that resonated with my impressions of Slovenia and Slovenes.

It was a pleasure to read this book. Going to find the second book and start with that to see what they do next.

I was excited to read this book as we love Slovenia and haven't seen much written about it. The book did not disappoint at all. It's very well written and engaging which is nice to see. It takes readers through a fun journey into the country and their lives and really paints this vivid picture of the wonderful country. I loved that they lived in the second small town as it is one of our family's favorite spots. There are wonderful descriptions of the outdoors BUT you do not need to be a mountaineer to enjoy this and appreciate the book. I look forward to reading more from this great author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, inspiring story and great travel writing

This is a beautiful book, which tells the story of Roy & Justi's epic relocation from the Scottish Highlands to Slovenia on the tightest of budgets. Roy Clark recounts the tale with such enthusiasm and joy that it makes you want to pack up and head off on an adventure too! The book is inspirational but Roy also doesn't shy away from the practical details of such an undertaking. He tells of the many trials and tribulations they went through to make their dream of living in the Julian Alps in Slovenia come true. However, even the trickier parts of their adventure - whether it's battling with red tape and bureaucracy or learning to negotiate metres of winter snow - are written with warmth and wit. Roy's descriptions of the Slovenian landscape and the people they meet along the way are sublime. It's easy to understand why the couple fell in love with the place. I can't wait for Roy's next book, as their Slovenian adventure continues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read about a New Place
Reviewed in Canada on August 23, 2020
This is a really enjoyable read about a country that may be a bit unfamiliar for many people. I loved learning about Slovenia and its people, culture, and landscape. It sounds like a lovely place to visit or spend a longer time, even!

Clark’s fun anecdotes and good-natured attitude pull you through his and his wife’s (and sweet Bryn’s) adventure into this new place. Just enough description helps draw a picture of the setting and food, and I think the greatest success is in Clark’s ability to convey the personality of the warm Slovenian people. I’ll definitely be reading more of their adventures on the sunny side of the Alps!

An interesting memoir about two people with wanderlust who follow their instincts and sense of adventure.
Despite the inevitable culture shock they are determined to try and integrate into their new country.
Related with honesty and some humour, I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to its sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent travel memoir

Just finished reading Roy Clark's book, Sunny Side of the Alps. It is a very readable account of a couple's experiences living in Slovenia on a tight budget. A mixture of adventurous climbing and walking stories along with the basic problems of day to day living in a country with a very different language and culture, told in an engaging and humorous style. It would be a useful handbook for anyone wanting to re-settle in another country, rather than the glib TV programmes such as "Escape to the Continent".
Looking forward to the next instalment!

I enjoyed this book very much. I am a Slovene living in Canada. I love to find out how foreigners experience Slovenia and what their first reactions are about customs and attitudes that are so familiar to me. Although Slovenia became very popular for tourism many foreigners now choose to make their life there. Roy and Justi are great adventurers and were so brave to venture into unknown. It is so interesting to read their story to see how Slovenia got under their skin and is now hard to leave. So glad they made their home in the Julian Alps.
