Summer of Change: An Enemies to Lovers Opposites Attract Small Town Romance (The Springs Book 1) Kindle Edition
He's used to getting what he wants. And he wants her. Successful, handsome and too damn charming for his own good—he's perfect. The only problem? Letting him in could destroy everything she knows and loves.
Samantha Burke loves her quiet close-knit community of Cedar Springs, just the way it is thank you very much. The addition of an upscale new resort as well as its arrogant owner, Trent Harrison, and the change they're both sure to bring to town, is certainly not welcome.
As far as Sam's concerned, Trent can turn right around and go back to where he came from. That is, until one very hot—and completely unexpected—kiss changes everything.
Now Trent is pushing his way into her town, and her life and it's getting harder and harder for Sam to deny the heat between them.
Change is inevitable, but can either of them drop their guard long enough to accept it when there's so much on the line? Including the chance for love?

From the Author
Welcome to The Springs!
This series is a crossover from The Castle Mountain Lodge Series, where some of your favorite characters might make appearances, but as with all my books, they can be read in any order.
The Springs is a little bit steamier than the Lodge, but one thing remains the same,--love.
Thank you so much for taking a chance on this series! I hope you enjoy The Springs!

From the Inside Flap
She swallowed hard, remembering the way he'd lectured her on trying to run a business in a small town and how the Grizzly Paw was going to be at risk of going under if something didn't give. Sam kicked at a stone on the sidewalk. She knew exactly what it was, too. The stupid resort that was going in up the road. It was changing the fabric of her town. People were scared, nervous about how the Springs opening would change the dynamic of their town. They were staying home, not eating out at the Paw anymore.
She took a minute to look around the main street of her beloved small town. In the green at the end of the street, kids played while their mothers chatted over coffee at one of the picnic tables. Sam could walk down to the lake, and on her way she'd be greeted by name by everyone she passed. The people of Cedar Springs were close. They looked out for one another and they cared about their picturesque mountain town. Outsiders weren't going to care. They were going to travel into town and destroy the peace and quiet, not to mention the extra cars, noise, and garbage they were likely to bring with them.
She sighed and laughed at herself a little because she knew if anyone could hear her thoughts, she'd be accused of being a crotchety old woman. And it wasn't that; she just wanted what was best. And as far as she could tell, it wasn't the Springs hotel.
With a shake of her head, she squeezed her files tight to her chest and walked back to the bar at the end of the road.
"Excuse me?" A deep male voice stopped her. "Can I ask you a question?"
Sam turned slowly, cautious of the strange voice and when she saw the owner of the voice, her heart did one of those stupid schoolgirl fluttery things. He was tall; his strong shoulders looked broader, encased the way they were in a well-cut suit. He ran a hand through his sandy blond hair that immediately flopped down over his forehead again. His hair was a juxtaposition to the clean-cut look he was trying to portray, but it was intriguing, and very sexy.
"Yes?" Sam drew out the word. She was pretty sure he could ask her anything and she'd be happy to answer it.
"I'm looking for a barber shop," he said. "I'm new to town."
Ah. Of course. The suit. Locals didn't walk around dressed like that. He was likely with the hotel.
She stiffened, quashing any attraction she felt for the man. "You're with the hotel." It wasn't a question.
"I am." He held out his hand. "My name is--"
"I don't care."
"Pardon?"
"Sorry," Embarrassed by her rudeness, her face reddened. "I'm just not really excited about the resort. It's not necessary."
"I don't understand. I think the resort would be bringing a lot of jobs to the town." He crossed his arms, and tilted his head, obviously amused by her. "Not to mention the tourism."
"We don't need it."
"Is that right?"
Anger and annoyance boiled through her. And something else. Something she didn't want to identify. "That's right. Now if you'll excuse me, I have work to do."
"Okay." He spoke slowly. His eyes filled with puzzlement. "But, the barber shop..."
Sam stopped herself before turning around. "It's across the street, next to the cafe. But if you ask me..."
"Yes?"
"It's fine the way it is."
She spun quickly and bit her bottom lip. What on earth made her say that? Oh, she knew exactly what made her say that. The man's eyes, his cocky smile, and his sexy shaggy hair had made her stomach flip. But it didn't matter--the man represented the enemy. She probably should have recommended Betsy at Hair Affair; she would have dyed it blue and permed it. And maybe that would be a good thing. Especially if it stopped the insane urge Sam had to run her hands through his hair.
She'd walked for five minutes, so lost in thought and chastising herself for even entertaining thoughts about a man who was in any way connected with the Springs that she didn't even realize she'd gone in the opposite direction of the Grizzly Paw. She circled back and shook her head clear of the thoughts and it wasn't until she finally set foot in her bar, after going the long way around, that she realized as annoying as the man was, he'd succeeded in distracting her from her financial troubles. At least for a few minutes.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2016This book was received for an honest review, and I wanted to sample Ms. Aitken's work. I am not normally a "romance" person, but this story was really, really good.
Trent Harrison and his brother are opening a new hotel in The Springs, a small town in the Rockies. Samantha Burke owns a small bar&grill in the town and feels the hotel will kill a number of the small businesses in town. She is more than ready to butt heads against Trent and his brother, but she discovers strange feelings rising for her new neighbor: feelings and longings she's having difficulty dealing with. The author is a great writer who knows how to develop character, follow a plot line, and develop subplots and backstories--all in a "just a romance" book! In my opinion this author is a better writer than many I have been dealing with lately. (Those I usually don't mention anywhere.) I know this is the first, supposedly, in a series (although it seems there was one before this one). and I want to read them all, and anything else Ms. Aitken has written. When you have a good writer, they can make an empty tin can enticing, let alone a good storyline! Give her story a try, and I'm sure you'll be happy with the richness of her work!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2014SUMMER OF CHANGE is a standalone read with a happy ending. There are sexy scenes if that is an issue for you. Two brothers build a resort in a small town and the local bartender, Sam, short for Samantha is against the whole idea. But she is attracted to one of the brothers.
Sam owns the local pub. She is not a happy person. The pub is not making any money. The new resort in town is probably going to take some of her business, her boyfriend dumped her but then he comes back to town on occasion and he sleeps with her and she goes for it and then he dumps her again. She is not an easy person to like. All the negativity in her life really pulls her down.
Trent is one of the owners of the new resort. He was immediately attracted to Sam but he doesn't know why. She is beautiful and sexy but she is a forever type of girl and he is just not trusting women after a bad experience. But, he can't stay away.
This is a sexy romance once these two decide to get together but there is a lot of drama on their journey to a happy ever after. It is an entertaining read and I would recommend it.
I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. revised review 9/15/2022.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2019Better than I thought it would be. A fancy resort being built in a mountainous region with a small town involved. Some locals not looking forward to the intrusion even if it means more jobs etc. Local pub owner trying to make her business survive so she can continue the family's name there. Of course the normal sparks are lit when the one resort owner meets the local pub owner and the romance begins to unfold. Along with beautiful descriptions of the area, the way the resort is coming along and the various other characters that are directly connected, this becomes a really sweet story of life, the changes that we make for ourselves, the changes that occur whether we expect them to or not, and the beauty of accepting life, love and holding true to what is really important. It is part of a series, there will be more that tell about the other characters besides our two main ones here, Sam and Trent. Some call it a cliff hangar but it isn't really. It does let you know that there is a continuation, but the theme of this particular one is complete. You'll see what I mean when you get to the last. Gives you a hint at what is next but if you don't get the next book, you won't be left in the cold as far as this one is concerned. I liked the story and enjoyed reading it. I would recommend it.

Summer of Change was a fun, light read. Trent and his brother have always wanted to own a healing resort. When they find Cedar Springs they build the Springs based around the natural hot springs in the area. They are just about ready to open, but they haven't really emerged themselves into the community yet.
Sam has lived in Cedar Springs forever and she loves it there. She owns the local bar and restaurant and she is scrambling to make her bills. She blames her loss of income on the new resort. She thinks this is going to be some snobby high class place where people will down upon people like her. She has never seen the resort or the people that own it, but she knows it is just going to be horrible for the town. She knows they will steal all of her customers and she will be worse off than she is now. Why she thinks this I am not sure. If they are such a high class place wouldn't they get a different set of cliental? She doesn't have a fancy upscale place so why would they steal all her business? I know I don't eat at the expensive restaurants except for special occasions. Oh well. She is just really irrational about the whole thing.
When Sam and Trent first run into each other there is an instant attraction. When Sam finds out who Trent is she wants nothing to do with him, though she can't help her attraction. They are thrown together when Trent helps with the festival that is coming up, the festival Sam's bar puts on every year. Things move quickly, this is a fast paced read, but it was cute. It was a fun summer read. Sure Sam is a bit ridiculous at times with her hatred for the Springs, but it was fine. Overall a cute read if you are looking for something light.

Summer of Change is book 1 in the Springs series by Elena Aitken and a crossover from the Castle Mountain Lodge series.
Trent and Sam...opposites in many ways but sparks fly between them anyway. He is set to build and open a resort to bring tourism to the town of Cedar Springs and she is a bar owner wanting to keep the family legacy moving forward but doesn’t want to see the changes in the town. Can these two find a compromise and maybe find love along the way? Only time will tell...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good
Nothing exceptional here, but a cute romance between two nice characters, in a small town where people must accept a change with the opening of a new resort. I read it in two days, and I recommend it.
