Dorotea DeVillardi is ninety-one years old, gorgeous, and worth a fortune. Matt Friedrich’s going to steal her.

The Nazis seized Dorotea’s portrait from her Viennese family, then the Soviets stole it from the Nazis. Now it’s in the hands of a Russian oligarch. Dorotea’s corporate-CEO grandson played by the legal rules to get her portrait back, but he struck out. So he’s hired the DeWitt Agency to get it for him – and he doesn’t care how they do it.

Now Matt and Carson, his ex-cop partner, have to steal Dorotea’s portrait from a museum so nobody knows it’s gone, and somehow launder its history so the client doesn’t have to hide it forever. The client’s saddled them with a babysitter: Dorotea’s granddaughter Julie, who may have designs on Matt as well as the painting. As if this wasn’t hard enough, it looks like someone else is gunning for the same museum – and he may know more about Matt and Carson’s plans than he should.

Matt went to prison for the bad things he did at his L.A. art gallery. Now he has a chance to right an old wrong by doing a bad thing for the best of reasons. All he has to do is stay out of jail long enough to pull it off.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Interlacing storylines give this series its charm...It's nice to have some modern It Takes a Thief escapism to slip away to in this world gone awry. Suffice it to say, I can't wait for The DeWitt Agency Files #3." -- CriminalElement.com

From the Author

The DeWitt Agency Files series follows Matt Friedrich, our fairly tarnished hero, as he investigates (and sometimes commits) art-related crimes. Trafficking in stolen art and antiquities is the fourth-largest transnational crime by value -- that's a lot of opportunity for Matt to get himself into more trouble.

A brilliant heist story filled with fascinating art history reminiscent of Dan Brown or Steve Berry. Only better. The vivid characters and historical background are drawn with such realism it felt more like a documentary than a work of fiction. The fascinating hero, his mysterious sidekick, and their even more mysterious client will keep you biting your nails from beginning to end. I learned more about art, thieves, and war crimes from this book than all the non-fiction volumes I've read combined.

The complex issues of ownership and motivation that drive this story will teach you fascinating lessons and make you think about justice with every page you read.

If you love the legacy of WWII, art and art ownership, and iceberg-characters (more beneath the surface than above) you'll love STEALING GHOSTS!

It's the must read of the year!

Though it’s described as an art crime novel, it really doesn’t matter whether you’re an art lover or an art hater when it comes to reading this taut and ENTERTAINING story. There’s plenty of great history and facts and behind-the-curtain details related to the art world, but the driver of the story is the juicy plot that doesn’t fail to ENTERTAIN, along with the characters who are just as ENTERTAINING. If ENTERTAINMENT is your goal, then this is your book. Have you gotten the hint yet? If yes: What are you waiting for? If no: I can’t help you.

Charnes combines a lot of different elements in a winning combination. There’s the DeWitt agency, a private espionage organization available to those who can afford it. There's the massive art theft of the Nazi era. There’s the Russian oligarch. There’s the Matt Friedrich, art expert and somewhat hapless spy. And the there is Carson. Without her, Matt would lost. Putting it all together is not easy, but Charnes manages to do with elegance, wit and a lot of tension. This is a well crafted thriller and a great twist at the end. You will not be disappointed.

What more could you want in a crime novel? This book has it all. A fascinating hero, a mysterious sidekick, a cagey boss and their even more secretive client will keep you on edge from beginning to end. I learned so much about the area of stolen art, thieves, and war crimes from this book. The plot, the characters and the twists will keep you glued to your Kindle – you never see the end coming – great stuff! Can’t wait for the next installment. This would make a great TV series. Hey Amazon – you need to consider this for Prime Entertainment.
