a fun, light and quick read that packs a punch with a twist of London

What a perfect introduction to this author and her new series: having never read Nikki Moore before, this short installment was the perfect bite of holiday cheer with fun characters, clever plotting and a sweet romance mixed in.

Holly has scored the perfect winter job: a former competitive ice skater and perennial happy-go-lucky lover of all things Christmas, she is an ice marshall (sort of a lifeguard/crowd control) at the Somerset House courtyard ice rink. In her element – Holly is everything that an employer would want for that position: she can skate, she is helpful and always smiling, and she truly LOVES being on the ice.

Noel despises winter and everything that it entails, especially Christmas. While he has his reasons, he also is trying to be a good and fun godfather when he agrees to spend time with young Jasper at the ice rink. Noel has a touch of scrooge in him, with some justifiable reasons, but he is intrigued by Holly, even if his manner is gruff.

These two feel like polar opposites at first, with a gentle push-pull and clever dialogue that softens Noel’s rough edges, and Holly’s family is priceless with a tonic-drinking dog and their welcoming and warm attitude.

I really enjoyed this story, and the setting of Somerset House (a gorgeous neo-classical estate home that looks over the Thames) is a lovely setting and infuses that curious mix of modern and historic that is so prevalent in London. Holly and Noel are wonderful characters, well developed and given solid backstories, showing the author’s skill to pack so much punch into so few pages.

The character reveals, backstory and some gentle growth and change to enable and solidify their romance works perfectly, giving both characters life and breath together and apart.

If you want a fun, light and quick read that packs a punch with a twist of London tossed in to add flavor, this is the perfect story.
