As kidnappings continue, it’s new TSS Agent Kali Wietris’ job to find out why. Her investigation points to a secretive planet, Red Ghost, where no one visits without an invitation.
Pirates are fifteen-year-old Treva’s best hope of finding a mother, who mysteriously disappeared when his absent father returned. With his mother’s warnings about criminal ties ringing in his head, Treva becomes increasingly worried about the cost of his father’s love.
Together, Kali and Treva must uncover Red Ghost’s secrets. The last thing they need is the complication of an experimental, sentient weapon known as the Destroyer of Worlds. With the fate of entire planets on the line, Kali must confront the rising threat and free the captives before it's too late.

About the Shadowed Space Series
People are disappearing, and Kali needs to find out why.
Kali's upcoming internship is her final test before becoming a TSS Agent—and her last chance to prove she’s worthy. When she’s assigned to investigate a series of abductions in the Outer Colonies, the mission seems simple. However, the disappearances are part of a larger rising threat, and the TSS has greatly underestimated the danger. With time running out for one captive woman, Kali must risk everything to confront the evil lurking in the shadows.
Set in the Cadicle Universe, Shadowed Space is a standalone series set concurrent to the Taran Empire Saga.

Award-winning and USA Today bestselling author A.K. DuBoff has always loved science fiction in all forms, including books, movies, shows, and games. If it involves outer space, even better! Though most known for the acclaimed Cadicle Universe space opera books, as well as the Nebula-nominated Dark Stars trilogy, DuBoff also co-wrote and executive produced the multi award-winning feature film, Crypto Shadows. As a full-time writer, DuBoff can frequently be found traveling the world while writing timeless science fiction and fantasy. When not writing, she enjoys wine tasting, binge-watching TV series, and playing epic strategy board games.

Lucinda Pebre is my author-name. Lucinda because it begins with an ‘L’ like my real name and makes it easy for Mariëlle Smith, the co-presenter of our Diving into Writing podcast. She calls me Lou or Lu, so she doesn’t have to remember that I have two names.
If you are reading this, I guess you want to know a little bit more about me. I’m married to Marcus, who was born in Devon and constantly makes music. I get to hear the same few bars again and again and again. Our house is rarely silent as if he isn’t making music, he’s listening to it.
While I’ve always known that I would write, I trained as a nurse because it felt right, and it was. I love my day job!
Until I understood there was no reason to wait for the perfect time to write, stories invaded my waking life. They lurked at the back of my mind while driving or wandering supermarket aisles. I thought that this was normal and happened to everyone. It was only as those stories made it to the page that my mind first emptied and then filled with the same rubbish as anyone else.
Once I started writing, the story flowed out, and at the end of seventy thousand words, I had the sort of novel that I couldn’t have given away. For me, some aspects of writing are intuitive and easy, but others require effort and study. When those two aspects came together, I started to write fiction that people wanted to read. Nobody will ever see my first two novels while I’m alive. I loved every moment of writing them, and they taught me a lot, but they lacked structure and subtlety. Today, writing a novel is a different experience. It is as much hard work as joy, but the result is something others can enjoy. Of course, I’m still learning and wouldn’t want it any other way. Each novel should be better as I understand more about both me and the writing process. It doesn’t stop me from searching for an easier path, the one that probably doesn’t exist. If you are a writer, you might be interested in the Diving into Writing podcast. Mariëlle Smith, Writing Coach and Author and I record an episode every fortnight.
I started publishing stories by writing Fan Fiction. Fans know what they like and can be brutal in their feedback. You can find my short stories in the anthology, Tales from the Kurtherian Universe: Fans Write for The Fans: Book 3, and Tales from the Oriceran Universe: Fans Write for The Fans: Volume 1 (Oriceran Fans Write For the Fans).
At this time, I was working on stories in my Barathrum Universe and quickly followed that by publishing a novella. I put this on hold when I got the excellent opportunity to co-write space opera in the Cadicle Universe with the fabulous Queen of Space Opera Amy Duboff.
Amy and I developed the sort of trust needed to write together successfully and have fun. Now the challenge is to write in the Cadicle Universe and the Barathrum Universe simultaneously while holding down a full-time job and care for whatever doggy waifs and strays end up living with us.
I live in the city of Sheffield in the UK, near to the Peak District National Park. If only the Cornish sea were nearer, it would be perfect. As a compromise, we visit the coast as much as possible and indulge in wild swimming closer to home.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2020The Shadowed Space series is shaping up to be the sort of story that sucks you in, spits you out at the end of the book and leaves you wanting more......now, preferably! Be aware that this book leaves you with a bit of a cliff-hanger at the end, so if you don't like the thought of waiting for the next book, you probably shouldn't start. But on the other hand, you would be missing out on a thoroughly good story, with strong characters that shine when the odds are against them. Shadow Rising continues Kali and Mika's quest to find a number of missing women in the Outer Colonies. However, they soon find the missing women are part of a wider plan that a nefarious organization has for the colonies. This is a brilliantly crafted story and Lucinda and A.K do a wonderful job of not only broadening the readers understanding of the Cadicle Universe, but also providing a group of characters who are brave and relatable. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series and finding out what Kali, Mika and Treva get up to next :)
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2020TSS agent, Kali probably rued the day every single day since she decided to going undercover by joining the band as their bass player. Frankly, she sucked at it.
But, then, women are still disappearing and with a regretful Mika are keen to find the how, why and where of it.
For fifteen year old Treva the disappearance of his mother provided the necessary spur to try a hair brained scheme to find her by joining.... a pirate ship called The Hyperion.
In Shadow Rising these two characters will eventually get joined into a joint quest pointing towards a very shadowy threat to freedom of many human worlds.
But it is Kali and her suffering from attacks of nerves every so often that may prove to be a problem to the quest, making this reader equally nervous as the stakes keep on rising.
Quite the page turner as consequence, though.
Enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2020Kali is finding out that she maybe is NOT made out to be a Base player in a Rock and Roll band. But with Mika and the Band, Kali is chasing the only lead she has on the missing women. Just two days on planet, she bump into a Pirate Captain and a 16 year old boy. You will be missing out big time if you don't pickup this book. Amy DuBof and her new writing pal Lucinda Pebre have written a fantastic book two in the continuing series of SHADOW RISING (A SHADOWED SPACE BOOK 2. Plop your money down or you will be sorry.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2020Book two of this series continues the mystery of the missing women in the outer colonies. Kali is now a fully trained and graduated TSS Agent and her assignment is to continue the search for the kidnapped women and to determine the reason. Going undercover as a bass player for a band when she cannot actually play an instrument makes it even tougher but leads to a clue. Treva, the teenage son of a crime boss searching for his mother, who is angry with his father is willing to help.
You might think this is a mystery from today's headlines. It's not. This is an adventure series set in Duboff's Cadicle Universe where the TSS is the Tararian Selective Service whose agents are telepaths. The missing women have abilities. The band travels by spaceship. The gigs are on different planets. The criminals are not just pirates shooting guns, they are creating a sentient weapon that destroys planets.
Definitely read book 1 in the series first. This 2nd book is even better as the characters develop and the cast is added to. New planets and world building expand the story. All of the elements contribute to the plot and draw you deeper into the story. When you reach the cliff hanger endng you can add book 3 to your wish list as it is availabe for preorder. (Between now and November, you can read Duboff's original Cadicle series "Fractured Empire" available as a 7 bookset and also on KU. I say that because my enjoyment of that series several years ago is what has led me to keep an eye out for more stories like this.) Shadowed Space is science fiction and mystery - my two favorite genres.
Pebre does an excellent job writing in Duboff's universe and has created a completely unique storyline with strong characters. TSS Agent Kali is young and learning not only as a telepath, but as a young woman. Treva is perfectly written as a 15 year old boy with very understandable emotions of anger, confusion, betrayal and loss. This series can be enjoyed by all. but it is definitely appropriate for teens as to content and language.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent second book in series
The authors have kept the energy going in this episode. Thrills, spills and kills mount up. Relationships roller coaster with unexpected characters teaming up on the same side because of one unifying person and their life changing purpose. action aplenty. A couple of transitions in the plot development were a little abrupt but all is forgiven as the book delivered entertainment galore. A slower foundation building early book builds to a climactic cliff hanger.
