- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 May 2012The SS seem to be having a ball on this album and trying out a load of different styles. It is certainly the most interesting album they have made and almost every track is excellent in it's own right. I especially like "Only the Horses", "Baby Come Home" and "Shady Love" (Jake Shears is not a bad rapper!).
My only reservation is that the whole thing sounds like a mixed bag of individual songs thrown together rather than a coherant album. In fact as an album it is probably their weakest yet, and not in the same league as their debut, or what I consider their finest album "Night Work"
There is some cracking stuff here and any SS fan will love it, but they have set the bar so high in the past that as an album it does disappoint a little. I think a different song sequence may have helped, but I'm being picky really, it's all great fun and on my playlist all week.
02/07 Update....... for some reason it doesnt sound all over the place any more at all, even though it is. This album is brilliantly addictive !
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 August 2012Coming from their (in my mind) best album to date, Night Work, the Scissor Sisters showcase new tracks and talents for Magic Hour. At first, the album seemed like quite a mix of various songs and styles, but they work perfectly fine either on their own or listening to the album as a whole (the exception being Ms Matronic's Magic Message which only really works if you listen to the album as a whole -- it links in to Let's Have a Kiki).
Overall, very well received album, and even among friends of mine who are not fans it was received reasonably well.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 March 2015Unfortunately the copy of the album I received is scratched badly on two tracks, but that doesn't stop the realisation that this is a great, largely upbeat album. All the elements that make up the Scissor Sisters' sound are present and correct, with no dip in quality despite reaching their fourth album. The whole hangs together well despite five different producers being used including the Scissor Sisters themselves, Stuart Price and Calvin Harris. On some albums this could end up with a cobbled together patchwork - not here as the album bounces along at a great pace, hanging together well. Already a particular favourite, "Let's Have A Kiki" extols the virtues of a gathering, and is even better in its "DJ Nita Remix" form, one of the album's four bonus tracks.
If you like classic hits like "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" and the more balladic "Laura" you already have a good idea of the scope of this album - bouncy pop interspersed with the occasional slower number. It's a natural continuation of a great pop band with a well used formula that hasn't waned a bit. Now, all I need to do is re-order a new, unscratched copy...
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 September 2012Really enjoyed the album. I can really say its strange because I can see a lot of differences but also a lot of similarities to their previous work. Quite different from Ta-dah, but some great electro work similar to some of their first album and Night Work. I really love Only the Horses and Baby come home. Must have for any fan of the Scissors.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 November 2020This is by no means a bad album as there are a few standout tracks on it. The issue this album has is that it is lacking an identity and consistency, the tracks are here, there and everywhere. It's like the Scissor Sisters didn't know where to take the album and it shows with the peaks and troughs of the tracks.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 November 2013I know that some people have reservations because this album has gone in a pop direction, but I love it! The more I listen to it, the more I get addicted. Didn't disappoint me at all - still fabulous as ever. It was the ideal soundtrack for a party I did recently.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 October 2012I have often seen Scissor Sisters on TV and was delighted when the CD became available. Every song is clear and full of differing melodies - There wasn't one I didn't like and my wife liked it so much I bought one for her also to use in her car. You will not be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 April 2016I don't think this is as good as Ta-Daa or Night Work. Good fun music, but somehow I find myself skipping a lot more tracks in the car than I would for Night Work. No real stand out tracks

5.0 out of 5 stars Be aware this is not the SPECIAL EDITION...but still great album
Great band and great album. Be aware that the CD delivered is only a single CD which is similar to the deluxe version on iTunes (without the video of "only the horses"). It DOES NOT include the 2nd DVD special edition. Was very dissapointed when it arrived with only the basic version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buen disco y gran opción el Amazon AutoRIP

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Awesome Summer Record
I pre-ordered Magic Hour, and was a little skeptical while reading the initial, mixed reviews. Even the sound clips weren't entirely convincing that it would be as fantastic as Night Hour. No need to worry. It's awesome, and people need to be less critical. There is no other group out there that can deliver their fans two feel-good albums (Party Albums) in two consecutive summers. Hats off to the only group that can jump-start your summer and make you feel totally alive.
One thing that comes to mind is that Shady Love was released back in January. It's a great track, and blew me away at the time. Therefore, when you hear it again on the album, it doesn't blow your mind a second time, cause you have played it to death the past few months. For anyone that has not heard Shady Love, you are in for a real treat when Let's Have a Kiki flows into Shady Love. Anyone with a brain and a heart should be on their feet and reaching for the volume control, cranking it up and kicking off your shoes.
Even though their are many styles on this album, it is still a consistent, enjoyable party album of the same caliber as Night Work. The production is crisp, with lots of creative touches that take multiple listenings to truly appreciate.
Put your critical pencil behind your ear and cut loose and enjoy some good music!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic Scissor!
